Chapter 93: Awakening Memories
"Where is this?"
Zhao Feng rubbed his head and slowly sat up, finding himself in an unfamiliar room.
The intense headache left him no time to think; his entire body felt like it was about to split open, and his internal organs were spasming.
Unable to figure out the situation for the time being, he could only sit there with one hand supporting himself against the wall, waiting until he calmed down before making a decision.
He vaguely remembered that he had been shot through several holes by the Caesar lizard and had basically no chance of survival, but judging from his current appearance, it seemed that he had been rescued.
Zhao Feng was now eager to know the news of his fellow law enforcement team members. Since he had survived, Captain Xiong Ming and the others should also have a chance of surviving, right?
He picked up a glass of water from the table next to him, his hands still trembling slightly, but it was much better than he had imagined, so much so that he felt it was unbelievable, like he was dreaming.
To be able to save him under those circumstances would be considered divine intervention; some might even believe it.
The water in the glass had become ice-cold, and drinking it didn't feel refreshing; instead, it made me even thirstier.
"Cough cough..."
Zhao Feng clutched his chest and coughed violently a few times, causing the cup to fall to the ground.
The sound of the cup falling to the ground probably alerted the people outside. Not long after, the tightly closed door to the room was opened, and a familiar figure flashed in.
"Wu Song?!"
Zhao Feng was overjoyed. The visitor was none other than Wu Song. Since Wu Song was still alive, everyone should be safe and sound.
The image of the Caesar lizard mercilessly shooting dozens of law enforcement team members flashed through his mind. He immediately suppressed these horrific images and kept reminding himself that they were just hallucinations and that everything was fake.
Wu Song stared at him blankly, then nodded and said, "You're awake? How are you feeling?"
Zhao Feng was a new recruit who joined the East District Enforcement Team at the same time as him. Since they were both newcomers, the two got along quite well.
"I feel... okay, I guess. I never thought I would survive."
Seeing Wu Song's unusual indifference, Zhao Feng looked somewhat embarrassed. He felt that Wu Song had undergone some kind of strange change, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
"By the way, how are Brother Xiong and the others?"
Xiong Ming took great care of these newcomers, and they would call him Brother Xiong in private. This captain seemed carefree, but he was actually very meticulous.
When the encirclement was set up, Zhao Feng was a newcomer and received the same treatment as Wu Song. He was placed on the outer perimeter, and his chances of survival were greater than those of the veteran members.
He was very grateful to Xiong Ming and was naturally very worried about their safety, so he couldn't help but ask Wu Song as soon as he saw him.
Wu Song glanced at him and said, "You've just woken up, you should worry about yourself first."
Zhao Feng chuckled twice, but accidentally aggravated his wound, causing him to wince in pain.
"I'm fine, where are Brother Xiong and the others? Why did you come alone? And where is this place?"
Faced with Zhao Feng's barrage of questions, Wu Song shook his head with a wry smile.
"This guy is truly an incurable good-natured man," Wu Song thought to himself.
He spent several months with Zhao Feng and got to know his temperament. To put it bluntly, Zhao Feng was a complete and utterly kind-hearted person.
When they first started hunting Caesar's monitor lizards, he was always at the forefront, and no one could stop him. He even gave up the spot that Captain Xiong Ming kindly prepared for him.
After a long silence, Wu Song slowly said, "They're all dead. Only the two of us survived."
Zhao Feng's eyes twitched twice, and he laughed awkwardly, "Haha, it's only been a short time since we last met, and you've already learned to joke around."
Wu Song remained silent, his face showing no emotion whatsoever.
A bad feeling suddenly rose in Zhao Feng's heart. Could it be that what he said was all true?
Recalling the images that flashed through his mind, he had just thought they were just hallucinations caused by sleeping too long, or a nightmare.
A hint of sadness finally appeared in Wu Song's eyes, and he couldn't help but sigh softly, "We have done our best, but we still couldn't keep them."
"The funeral was held two days ago at the Martyrs' Cemetery. Once you've recovered, I'll take you there to pay your respects."
It was as if a thunderbolt struck Zhao Feng's mind, and he froze on the spot.
A flood of memories rushed through his mind, including scenes of Xiong Ming clinging tightly to the Caesar monitor lizard and refusing to let go, as well as scenes of his teammates having their necks bitten off one after another by the Caesar monitor lizard.
Finally, he cried...
She cried like a three-year-old child.
Wu Song watched him quietly from the side, his eyes somewhat unfocused. He moved his lips, but ultimately did not utter a word.
Only by understanding pain can we grow better, even though this kind of growth is not what we want at all.
After a long while, Zhao Feng stopped, his eyes still bloodshot and his mind a complete mess.
His body, which had just begun to show signs of improvement, reopened its wounds after his outburst, and the seeping blood gradually stained the white gauze on his abdomen red.
"Tell me what happened after I collapsed," Zhao Feng said, his voice somewhat somber.
Wu Song didn't hide anything. He told a lot, including how they were rescued by Fu Jiu and others, how the funeral was held, and even the bright smile of Captain Xiong Ming in the photo on the tombstone.
"I want to be alone for a while," he said.
Wu Song wisely left, leaving Zhao Feng alone in the room, staring at the ceiling and sorting through the chaotic memories in his mind.
He was an orphan who grew up in an orphanage, attended the most ordinary schools, and ate the most ordinary food. If it weren't for Xiong Ming's appearance, he might have lived his life in such an ordinary way without leaving a trace.
Xiong Ming used to visit the children at the welfare home often, and he would occasionally tell them stories and moral lessons.
Perhaps thanks to him, the atmosphere in the orphanage was quite good, and none of the dirty things that were rumored happened.
Zhao Feng was also one of those orphans. At that time, as he turned fifteen, he realized for the first time that he should do something for the world.
After waiting for so many years, he finally joined the law enforcement team led by Xiong Ming, but Xiong Ming passed away a few months later.
Xiong Ming's death dealt him a heavy blow to his spirit, and unknowingly, some dormant memories began to be unlocked.
Sweat dripped down his chin, and his head felt like it was being pounded with a hammer, causing excruciating pain.
Zhao Feng covered his head with a pillow, but this did not provide any relief.
As if on a fast-paced tour, a series of unfamiliar scenes began to appear before my eyes.
It was a battlefield with a million soldiers, and countless soldiers charged toward the general in the center with bloodshot eyes.
The general was clad in silver armor and wore a silver helmet with a red tassel. He wielded a long silver spear with unparalleled skill, and even a million-strong army could not stop him for a moment. Zhao Feng was deeply moved by this sight.
However, there was one thing he couldn't understand: why was the general holding a child in his arms?!
