Traveling through the game world

Chapter 14: The Killing System and Just How Brain-Dead is Darlex?

"You really surprise me!" Hope's voice rang in Lian Yang's ears again. "I didn't expect you to kill someone so quickly. I thought there wouldn't be any battles with adventurers in Silver Village!"

Lian Yang silently replied to his hope in his heart: "Is killing strange in this kind of online game world? Especially for these adventurers who are controlled by evil thoughts and don't know their own mortality. But to be honest, I'm also quite surprised to encounter adventurers here."

"Of course not! PK and being PK'd are the main themes of online games." Hope said with absolute certainty, "I'm just congratulating you, because your first kill has activated a brand new system."

Upon hearing that a new system had been launched, Lian Yang quickly asked, "What system?" The boost that the in-game store had given Lian Yang was immense, so he was filled with 120% anticipation for the new system.

Hope said, "The Killing System is really crucial for you. Let me give you a brief introduction:"

Defeating adventurers of the same or higher level will grant you 10% of your current level's experience.

You can randomly obtain one item from the backpack and equipment of the adventurer you kill. You can also choose to spend a certain amount of kill points to specify the dropped item or increase the number of dropped items. If you have enough kill points, you can even obtain all the items from the adventurer you kill.

The Kill Shop is now open. You will gain one kill point for each adventurer of the same or higher level you kill.

The Kill Shop will periodically and randomly sell one evil item. The current item, 'Demon Sword - Apophis', is priced at 100,000 Kill Points.

The experience and kill points you gained from killing the three people you just killed have been used to activate the kill system, so your current kill points are 0.

In the world of Arad, aside from weapons, which are tangible physical objects, all other equipment, such as armor, jewelry, and even higher-level special equipment, are virtual. These virtual items can genuinely enhance strength and can be traded, but they cannot be physically manifested while equipped; no one can see or touch them. Therefore, only weapons are retained after a person dies, while other equipment and items are recycled by the world and randomly distributed into the body of any monster, awaiting its death to drop them again.

The appearance of the Killing System undoubtedly delighted Lian Yang. Although it was impossible for him to indiscriminately kill innocent people in order to improve his strength, conflicts and killings were inevitable in the Arad continent, which revered martial prowess. Undoubtedly, the appearance of the Killing System maximized the benefits of every killing Lian Yang committed.

Furthermore, the emergence of this system greatly boosted Lian Yang's confidence in his fight against the evil entity Sam. The Killing System undoubtedly gave Lian Yang, currently at level 16 with barely any experience, a chance to reach level 20 before battling Sam. At level 20, due to equipment issues, Lian Yang's strength might even surpass that of Baron, who is currently level 30. Even adventurers controlled by Sam are still adventurers. The mentally unstable nature of these adventurers not only makes killing them effortless for Lian Yang but also guarantees his rapid increase in strength.

As for the last item in the Kill Shop, Lian Yang chuckled and dismissed it. The Demon Sword - Apophis was arguably the most magnificent weapon in DNF history. Its powerful stats weren't too bad even in a version where players were already tackling Anton. However, it was called the Demon Sword because it could not only steal the user's life but also control any adventurer who tried to wield it. Without a sufficiently strong mind and strength, it was impossible to control Apophis. Kane, still lying dead in the Howling Cave, was the best example of what not to do. Moreover, the price to obtain it was 100,000 Kill Points—that was the lives of 100,000 adventurers! To kill 100,000 lives for a weapon that could backfire on him—Lian Yang knew he couldn't be that heartless.

Baron was unaware that Lian Yang was talking to Hope, but he was curious when Lian Yang suddenly stood there silent: "Lian Yang, wake up."

"Huh?" Just after reading the information about the Killing System, Lian Yang heard Baron calling him. He patted his head and said, "Nothing, just remembered something. How's Alice? How's her recovery?"

Alice sat up from the ground and said, "I'm fine, I was just frightened by the crazy adventurers. What on earth happened here! The books from the Celestial Realm say that elves are kind and gentle creatures. But the elves here seem to have gone mad, and the adventurers here are all abnormally insane." Thinking about this, Alice was still a little shaken.

Hearing Alice's words, Lian Yang explained, "The elves of the Arnofa Forest were originally kind and gentle, but a black nightmare from who-knows-where changed everything. Under the invasion of the black nightmare, the kind elves became evil, and the gentle creatures became brutal. And just when a temporary solution to the black nightmare was found, an unknown evil force has come to invade the Arnofa Forest, which has not yet had time to regain its peace."

After listening to Lian Yang's explanation, Alice asked, "So, is there any solution now?"

Baron produced Morgan's potion: "This is what we need. It's a tranquilizer made by Morgan, one of the top alchemists on the Arad continent. It can calm down the crazed elves. So our original mission was to find the leader of the dark elves, the Shadow Tyrant Darex. Once Darex regains his tranquility, the other dark elves will gradually return to peace as well."

Alice had certainly heard of Morgan's reputation. If he wasn't just making a name for himself, his potions should be able to solve the problem of the elves' berserk state. Thinking of this, Alice asked again, "Are there only potions for dark elves? Are there potions for the other three types of elves as well?"

Upon hearing Alice's words, Lian Yang's heart skipped a beat, a very bad premonition washing over him. He said, "We've already awakened the leaders of the other three elemental types, so there shouldn't be any problems, right?" Even so, Lian Yang felt inexplicably uneasy.

Baron added at the opportune moment, "Don't even mention it, the leader of the Light Elves, the Illusionary Elf, was really troublesome. We finally managed to subdue it after we both exhausted ourselves fighting it."

Listening to the two of them speak so confidently, Alice was a little puzzled: "But when I came here, the ice elves, fire elves, and even the light elves were just as crazy as the dark elves here. It took me a lot of effort to get here from the other three types of elves."

"What! That's impossible!" Lian Yang and Baron exclaimed in unison. But then they looked at each other, their eyes filled with worry.

Seeing this, Alice was even more certain. She stated definitively, "I don't know what you did before, but it's clear the problem of the elven rage hasn't been resolved. In fact, your actions may have even accelerated the evil progress of the hidden forces lurking in the shadows."

Before Lian Yang could say anything more, a tremendous roar came from afar: "You damned humans! Who gave you the audacity to ambush my great Shadow Tyrant, Darlex! I will kill you all!"

Lian Yang said, "It's Darlex, he's fighting!"

Baron drew his greatsword and said, "Go quickly and see if the other adventurers are fighting with Darlex!" He then charged forward.

"They're here!" Alice suddenly called out to Baron, pointing to Darlex who was fleeing for his life.

"You lowly humans, die! I'll show you the power of Shadow Tyrant Darlex!" Darlex roared furiously as he was being chased by a group of berserk adventurers.

"Wasn't Dalex supposed to be being hunted down? But what I'm getting at is him saying he's the one hunting these people down?" Baron was utterly puzzled as he watched Dalex flee in a disheveled state, yet still maintaining his arrogant demeanor.

Clad in towering, jet-black plate armor, standing a full 2.6 meters tall, he carried a massive steel shield emblazoned with a demon in his left hand and a three-meter-long spear in his right. His crimson cloak billowed in the wind as he charged forward, brandishing his massive spear and shouting ferocious cries. Behind him, a dense throng of adventurers followed with equally frenzied expressions. If one ignored the adventurers' cries of madness demanding his demise, Darlex truly possessed the aura of a tyrant. But now…

"You humans in front, I, in the name of the Shadow Tyrant, order you to stop the lowly humans behind me!" When Darlex saw the Lianyang Baron in front of him, he realized that they were not as crazy as the adventurers behind him, and he cried out in his heart that they were his saviors! As long as he could hold them off for a little while, he, the great Shadow Tyrant Darlex, could get away, no, he could retreat from the battlefield.

No one knew what Darlex was thinking, but at that moment, Yang Baron and Alice asked in unison, "Is he really Darlex?" Looking at the fleeing Darlex with a strange expression, the three remained silent.

Finally, Lian Yang broke the silence, saying, "It should really be Darlex, right? I remember Darlex was a bit of a chuunibyou (a person with delusions of grandeur). And judging from this, he hasn't been corrupted by evil thoughts."

The Darlex in the game was already quite chuunibyou (a Japanese term for someone with delusions of grandeur), but the real Darlex is clearly even more so. But no matter how chuunibyou he is, seeing that Darlex wasn't corrupted by evil thoughts and the Black Nightmare still brought a sigh of relief to Lian Yang.

"Alice, I invite you to join my party." Sharing experience points after forming a party is one of the differences between the Arad continent and Earth. Of course, in the world of online games, partying is almost an essential function.

"I accept!" Alice nodded and joined Lian Yang's team.

Lian Yang casually tossed two sets of Remi's Kiss and Magic Juice to Alice, explaining, "Here, take this. Remi's Kiss restores life, and Magic Juice restores magic." There were at least a hundred adventurers following Darlex. Although they were mindless zombies, adventurers were still far stronger than elves.

"I don't need... Uh! Such a powerful potion?" Alice was about to say she didn't need the potion, but she couldn't help but be surprised by its powerful effects.

Lian Yang nodded: "The battle ahead will likely be very difficult, so don't be stingy with the potions. I have plenty left." Although Remy's Kiss is incredibly expensive, Lian Yang currently has more than enough of it.

As Darlex drew closer, seeing that Lian Yang and his companions were ready to fight the adventurers behind them, he exclaimed happily, "Hahaha! It's truly an honor for you humans to fight for the great Shadow Tyrant Darlex! Remember to thank the great Shadow Tyrant for giving you the opportunity to fight for me!"

"Idiot!" Lian Yang couldn't help but utter the word "idiot" when he heard Dalex's arrogant words.

As the name suggests, upon hearing Lian Yang's assessment of Darlex, both Baron and Alice nodded in agreement.
