Year 1979: Eating meat with my wife and children

Chapter 50 The Escalator That Moves on Its Own

Li Xiangdong was utterly impressed by Hou San's self-righteous cleverness, and he gave him a thumbs up, saying, "You really are a genius!"

He didn't know how to evaluate Hou San. If you said he was stupid, he would always show a little cleverness from time to time. If you said he was smart, look at what he did.

Not only did she try to pin the blame on her brother-in-law, but the logic behind this whole thing is just nonsensical!

Why did Team Leader Liu, who loves drinking strong liquor, want to switch to Tieguanyin?

Li Xiangdong thought for a moment and didn't say anything to remind Hou San.

He couldn't just take advantage of this for nothing. He planned to do a good deed and teach Hou San, that silly boy, a lesson so he wouldn't always do foolish things because he thought he was clever!

Hou San untied the knot in Li Xiangdong's bundle of clothes, picked out a set of winter uniform and raincoat and rain boots and put them together.

"Dong-ge, put these clothes in the locker. We'll need them when we go out in the car later. Also, the flashlight. We'll need it when we get in the car. Remember to put them all in the locker."

"Put the tea mug and lunchbox on the wooden shelf by the door. When we're not traveling with the car and are resting at home, we can leave them there."

Li Xiangdong asked, "Do I need to bring it on the train?"

Hou San said, "I need one, but I find it too troublesome. Anyway, there are plenty of food boxes on the train, so I just reserve one in advance to eat and drink."

"Okay, I see."

Li Xiangdong walked to the wooden shelf by the door and saw that the lunch boxes and tea mugs on it were all covered with a piece of white tape with names written on them.

"Hou San, do you know anyone who has white adhesive tape? I'd like to put one on too."

Hou San thought for a moment and said, "It seems that only the infirmary has them. I'll go get them for you."

Seeing Hou San run out, Li Xiangdong took out his flashlight and batteries from his satchel, carried them along with his clothes, and walked to the lockers, finding an empty locker that no one was using.

The number 6 is also considered auspicious.

There are three lockers in a vertical row, and locker number 6 is at the bottom. No one else is using it, probably because they don't want to bend down to get things every time.

Li Xiangdong didn't care about that. As a young man who had been reborn, he believed that only by being able to bend down could he achieve great things!

He had just put his things away, locked the door, and put the key in his pocket.

Hou San ran back, panting. "Brother Dong, I also borrowed a fountain pen for you."

Li Xiangdong smiled and said, "Thank you."

"Don't mention it, Dong-ge, we're practically family."

Hou San grinned, put down his pen, tore open a piece of white tape, and bit off a section with his teeth.

Li Xiangdong took it and stuck it on the lid of the teacup, then picked up a pen and wrote his name stroke by stroke.

After he finished preparing the lunchboxes, he saw that Hou San's forehead was covered in sweat from running around.

He suddenly had a change of heart and decided to talk to Hou San about the tea, so that Hou San wouldn't get beaten up for it.

Who knew that Hou San would pick up the lunchbox, look at the name he wrote, and say sarcastically, "Brother Dong, your handwriting is really ugly! My niece who just started elementary school writes better than you."

Cao!

Li Xiangdong stared at Hou San and said, word by word, "What did you just say? I didn't hear you clearly. Say it again!"

"hehe."

Hou San chuckled dryly, put down the lunchbox in his hand, picked up a pen and some white tape, and ran off. "Brother Dong, I'm going to the infirmary to return my things."

Li Xiangdong didn't chase after Hou San. His initial thought was shattered by Hou San's words, who actually said that his handwriting was ugly.

He took his lunchbox and teacup to the wooden shelf by the door, found Hou San's name, and compared it.

Reality left him in a very awkward position; Hou San's handwriting was far superior to his.

He placed the teacup on top and the lunchbox below, then returned to his desk to reorganize the things he needed to take home. He stuffed as much as possible into his cloth bag, and tied it up with hemp rope if there was no room left.

'dong dong'

"Who is it? Come in."

Li Xiangdong saw that it was A Zhe who opened the door, and Hou San followed closely behind him, each step cautious and tentative.

Li Xiangdong ignored Hou San's antics and looked at A Zhe, asking, "Why did you come here?"

Ah Zhe casually found a chair and sat down. "I came to see you two since I had nothing to do. My boss arranged for me to go to Tianjin tomorrow. Do you two have any plans?"

Li Xiangdong said, "We're going tomorrow too. What time is your train?"

Ah Zhe replied, "The train is at 10:30. Are we on the same train?"

Li Xiangdong smiled and said, "It's the same train."

Ah Zhe said happily, "That's great, now the three of us can keep each other company."

Li Xiangdong nodded. "If you're free, come with me and Hou San for a bit, and we'll familiarize ourselves with the train station."

After he finished speaking, he turned to Hou San and said, "Didn't your brother-in-law say that you should take me around? Let's go now."

"Alright, Dong-ge, I'll take you there right now."

Li Xiangdong didn't settle accounts with him, and Hou San felt he had escaped a disaster, so he quickly agreed.

A Zhe asked curiously, "Does Hou San's brother-in-law also work here?"

Li Xiangdong nodded and said, "He's still the leader of our water supply team."

Ah Zhe made a "tsk tsk" sound, "If you didn't know better, you'd think the Beijing Railway Bureau belonged to Hou San's family. How come he has relatives everywhere he goes?"

Hou San tilted his head back and snorted, "You're just jealous of me!"

"I bother."

A Zhe expressed his disdain.

Hou San retorted, "Pah! Pah! Pah!"

"Okay, let's go!"

With two troublesome kids by his side, Li Xiangdong felt both helpless and exhausted.

Hou San led Li Xiangdong out of the office and walked down the corridor in the office area. The marble floor was very smooth.

The three of them walked on it wearing heavy leather shoes, making a clattering sound.

Li Xiangdong asked, "Hou San, what's your brother-in-law's name?"

Hou San said, "Liu Erdan."

Ah Zhe couldn't help but burst out, "Pfft! Hahahaha!"

To show his respect for his leader, Li Xiangdong just smiled to himself. He was a cautious man; what if Liu Erdan suddenly appeared?

With a smile on his face, he walked to the front. At the end of the corridor was a door. He pushed it open and entered the waiting hall.

The noise and bustling crowds made it feel like a completely different world from before.

Li Xiangdong looked around. The building had floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and even though it was a cloudy day outside, the entire lobby looked spacious and bright.

Led by Hou San, the three of them took a walk around the first floor.

"Holy crap! What is this thing?!"

Upon reaching the front, A-Zhe was astonished to see the four large escalators in the lobby. "How can these go up by themselves?"

"country bumpkin".

Hou San muttered something under his breath, then looked up to see Li Xiangdong staring at him.

He chuckled, took a few quick steps to Ah Zhe's side, put his arm around Ah Zhe's shoulder, and said with pride, "This is called an escalator, and it's made in our country! Come with me, I'll show you how it works."
