Socially anxious people transmigrate to another world; living in seclusion is too difficult.
Chapter 290 A Humiliating Journey
With the plan in place, Bai Chang turned to reassure Li Xiuwen, "Sister-in-law, our camp is a bit far away. Don't worry, we'll be there soon."
Li Xiuwen took it as genuine concern from the other party and thanked him repeatedly, saying, "Thank you so much, brother."
The six quickened their pace and finally arrived at the 39th Army camp before dusk. The guards, seeing that it was their own centurion leading the way, let them in without asking any questions.
Upon entering the camp, Li Xiuwen hurriedly asked, "Brother, could you tell me where my husband is? I can find him myself. I dare not trouble you any further."
The centurion immediately said sternly, "Sister-in-law, this is a military camp. How can we let you run around like this? Come with me first. After I've settled you in, I'll send someone to find your husband." Li Xiuwen knew she was being a little too hasty, so she had no choice but to agree and follow behind the group, but her eyes were searching for Zhang Hongtao's figure all around.
Before long, Li Xiuwen was led to a somewhat secluded tent, which was clearly a temporary living quarters for the soldiers. The six men entered the tent one by one. The centurion at the back looked left and right, and seeing that no one was around, he quickly lowered the tent flap and tied it tightly with a rope, as if afraid that someone might suddenly break in.
Li Xiuwen looked at the centurion who was tying up the tent flap, and then at the other four people around her who were looking at her strangely. She was puzzled and worried, and couldn't help but ask, "Brother, where is my husband?"
After finishing his work, Bai Chang turned around leisurely, his expression instantly becoming relaxed and cheerful. He said with a grin, "Sister-in-law, you haven't told me my brother's name yet. How am I supposed to help you find it?"
"I was being too hasty, brother. My husband's name is Zhang Hongtao. Can you help me find him?" Li Xiuwen looked at the expression on Bai Chang's face and became increasingly uneasy.
"Of course!" Bai Changle said happily. "However, this one silver coin doesn't seem to be enough as a reward." As soon as he finished speaking, he threw the silver coin that Li Xiuwen had given him on the ground like trash, and then swaggered over to Li Xiuwen.
Li Xiuwen was a little flustered and hurriedly said, "If you don't have enough money, I have more here!" As she spoke, she took out her purse and rummaged through it. Soon she had about ten copper coins in her hand, which was the last bit of money she could take out.
Just as they were about to take action, a man carrying food walked over from not far outside the tent. It turned out that it was dinner time for the army. The man was humming a song as he checked each tent one by one. During the rest period, many soldiers did not eat in the camp, but some soldiers inevitably missed the meal time because they were sleeping, so it was necessary for someone to check each tent one by one.
As the man drew closer, it turned out to be Zhang Hongtao. He seemed to have heard some noise and was walking towards the tent where the group was, looking on with suspicion.
Driven by curiosity, he tiptoed closer to the tent, intending to peek through the curtain, only to find it tied up like a dumpling. Just then, he heard voices drifting over, and the voices seemed vaguely familiar. But then he remembered—this was a military camp, and the person he longed for was in Huaijing; it couldn't possibly be her!
So he lay down on the ground, lifted the curtain with his hand, revealing a gap, and looked inside.
Zhang Hongtao glanced around casually, but his gaze was quickly drawn to the pack lying on the ground nearby. The moment he saw it, it was as if a lightning bolt struck his mind, causing him to momentarily freeze. This was the pack he and Li Xiuwen had carried with them when they left their hometown; he knew the patterns on it all too well!
He immediately realized that his wife must have come to see him. Snapping out of his shock, he saw Li Xiuwen being harassed by five men, and an uncontrollable rage surged within him. Without hesitation, he pulled out the carrying pole used for transporting food and smashed it against the tent flap with all his might, the force so great that it snapped the ropes tying it to the flap. Startled by the sudden commotion, the five men inside turned to look. They saw Zhang Hongtao, his face grim, shouting angrily, "Stay away from my wife!"
Li Xiuwen, who was dodging left and right, was startled when she heard Zhang Hongtao's voice. She then cried out, "Hongtao, save me!" The five people who were disturbed were furious when they saw this and immediately stepped forward to fight Zhang Hongtao.
In a moment, the sounds of fighting ceased. Zhang Hongtao had been beaten until his head was bleeding profusely. Several men dragged him to a spot not far from Li Xiuwen. Bai Chang said in a deep voice, "Is he the person you're looking for?" After saying that, he stared at Zhang Hongtao, who was being held firmly to the ground, and said slowly, "Our mood has been ruined today. You're going to get a good beating."
Zhang Hongtao stared wide-eyed at the centurion, trying several times to get up, but was firmly held down. The others did as the centurion said, and soon Zhang Hongtao was punched dozens of times, causing him to vomit blood. Li Xiuwen saw all of this and was heartbroken. She wanted to help but was powerless to do so, so she could only close her eyes and let tears stream down her face.
Time seemed to pass so slowly at this moment. Finally, the five men filed out of their tents. Soldiers were slowly returning from the nearby tents. The commotion attracted many onlookers, who gathered in twos and threes. The five men, however, were fearless and swaggered away.
On the tent floor, Li Xiuwen stared solemnly at Zhang Hongtao, who lay beside her with his eyes closed. She called out in a low voice, "Hongtao..." but her beloved no longer responded.
At this moment, a person walked in from outside the tent, and Li Xiuwen immediately felt a coat being draped over her shoulders. The person was Huang Lewei, who had just joined the 39th Army, but he only draped a coat over Li Xiuwen.
After doing all this, Huang Lewei shook his head. Although he was ashamed of the vulgarity of some soldiers in the army, it was none of his business, so he was completely unmoved.
As the crowd gathered, the news spread faster and faster, and soldiers from other military camps came to join in the fun. Upon hearing that someone had been killed, and that it was one of their own, some soldiers were filled with grief and indignation, while others pointed and whispered as if they didn't want the situation to get any worse. But in the end, no one knew exactly what had happened.
The rumors spread and became increasingly outrageous, with all sorts of claims being made. The area around the camp was bustling with noise, and the area outside the camp was packed with busybodies, completely blocking the camp gate. This made it impossible for the soldiers of the 39th Army to get in or out. Unable to bear it any longer, they reported the matter to the authorities.
