After returning to Cali, Fezi went straight home and quickly told his wife, Heda, "I won't be back for a long time. Take Carol and leave Cali immediately, as far away as possible. Don't ever return to the Duchy." He turned to leave, but Heda stopped him, asking, "What's wrong? Where are you going?"
“Treason.” Fezi broke free of Heda’s hand and said without turning his head, leaving Heda standing there stunned.
"Feizi! Explain yourself!" But no matter how much Heda shouted, Feizi did not turn around. He quickly left the house and got into the carriage. Only then did Feizi look at Heda standing at the door with reluctance through the carriage window. But he only glanced at her once before lowering the curtain and ordering the soldiers to speed up to the headquarters.
Heda was stunned for a while before she came to her senses. She immediately returned to the room and went to the place where Carol was being held captive. She anxiously said to the guards, "Go to headquarters quickly!"
“Madam, but the commander ordered us to watch over Miss Carol, and we…”
"This is the commander's order! Go now!" Before the soldiers could finish speaking, Heda flew into a rage. The two soldiers had never seen Heda so angry, so they had no choice but to leave the mansion and head to the headquarters. After they left, Heda rushed into the room and said urgently to Carol, "Daughter, pack your things quickly."
"What's wrong, Mother? What happened?" Carol was sitting by the window, looking dejected, when Heda suddenly told her to pack her things. Her anxious manner made Carol realize something was amiss.
"Don't ask what you shouldn't ask. I'll tell you later." Heda wanted to tell Carol about Fitz's decision, but when she connected the three things—Carol's disappearance, Fitz's sudden confinement of Carol, and the rebellion he had just mentioned—she realized that Fitz couldn't swallow the fact that Carol had been bullied. Based on the tacit understanding that the two had developed over many years of marriage, Heda knew that Fitz wouldn't do anything unprepared. Since he had made a decision, he was bound to rebel.
But both of them loved their daughter Carol so deeply. Fitz told him to leave immediately. Since he didn't even want to see Carol one last time, it meant he didn't want his daughter to know about this. He probably thought that if Carol knew, she would insist on staying to help him. After Heda figured all this out, she refused to tell Carol anything and just urged her to pack her bags.
Carol, bewildered, began packing, but not knowing what to take, she dawdled on and on. By the time Heda finished packing her valuables and came to Carol's room, she was still packing clothes. This annoyed Heda greatly. She said urgently, "Don't take anything unimportant, just take the valuables. We're leaving soon."
"What happened, Mother? Where are we going? Where is Father?" Carol was also anxious. She felt like she had been kept in the dark, which gave her a bad feeling. She felt that something bad was about to happen, especially since she didn't see her father. This made her intuition even more certain that this bad feeling must be related to her father.
"Now is not the time! My dear daughter, stop asking and come with me," Heda pleaded urgently.
After much persuasion, Carol finally packed her luggage. The mother and daughter immediately boarded the carriage and headed towards the North Gate. The carriage sped along, passing soldiers who had received orders to march quickly. Carol sat in the carriage, watching squads of fully armed soldiers run past. Her ominous premonition grew stronger, but no matter how she asked, her mother refused to tell her anything.
The journey was smooth, and the carriage soon exited the North Gate. A short while later, there was a knock on the door of Fei Qi's office. The secretary entered and said, "Commander, Madam and Miss have already left the North Gate."
"Okay, continue with the preparations."
"Yes."
"My Carol, don't blame your father..."
Time flew by, and the appointed day for the rendezvous arrived in the blink of an eye. Fei Qi gave the army one last inspection, and looking at the Second Army assembled before him, he nodded in satisfaction and then shouted, "All troops, march!"
Soldiers arrived one after another on the banks of the Wenluo River. The first to arrive was the Fourth Army, which was closest to the river, followed by Fitzgerald's Second Army, and then the Eighth, Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Armies. Only when all five armies had arrived did Fitzgerald finally feel relieved.
The five commanders met briefly to discuss military matters, then returned to their respective camps and ordered their troops to rest for the night. The next day, they broke camp and headed to the 17th Army's location.
From the day they met, the commander of the 17th Army arranged for people to scout along the way every day, hoping to join the other five armies. Meanwhile, the city where he was stationed had been under curfew and closed off since the day the meeting was held, allowing only entry and no exit, in order to block the news. On the second day at sunset, the other five armies finally arrived, and from then on, an army of nearly 100,000 people squeezed into the small city.
That very night, the six began discussing tactics. They planned to march at full speed from the start the next day and split into three groups to attack three of the city's gates. After some discussion, they decided to attack the north, northeast, and west gates respectively. This was the optimal plan they had derived from the distribution of the city's garrison. If they concentrated their attack on the three northern gates, they risked being surrounded by the garrison that was coming to their aid.
Nothing happened that night. Before dawn the next day, all the soldiers were ready to go. After the six commanders gave the order for a forced march, the six armies were divided into three groups of two, each group leaving from the east, south, and west gates respectively, and marching south. After all the soldiers had left, the three city gates were immediately closed. Fei Qi left a dozen or so soldiers at each gate to guard them, not allowing anyone to enter or leave, in order to prevent the news from leaking out as much as possible.
They encountered no obstacles along the way, at most small groups of troops. Whenever they were questioned, the three groups of rebels used the excuse of troop redeployment to deflect the question. They even forged the official documents for the redeployment in advance, making it foolproof.
The first and second days of the forced march went exceptionally smoothly. Scouts sent out along the way reported no large-scale garrisoning. This greatly boosted the confidence of the six commanders. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, they would reach the capital tomorrow. If no large-scale garrison was found by tomorrow, then the rebellion would be half successful.
Therefore, on the second night, all six armies rested and recovered briefly, and at three o'clock in the morning of the third day, they set off again. The closer they got to the capital, the more people they encountered on the road, but the scouts reported that they were all adventurers and merchants. As a result, all six rebel armies quickened their pace unconsciously, and around noon, they could see the walls of the capital in the distance.
"Faster! Speed up!" Fitz urged on horseback, ordering the soldiers to go faster and faster, while thinking to himself, "Carol, today your father will avenge you!"
The six armies arrived at the capital smoothly. Looking into the distance, they saw only a few scattered soldiers standing guard on the city walls. It seemed that the capital was not well-defended. Moreover, the soldiers on guard had seen their troops, but they did not panic. Instead, they acted as if they had not seen them. This puzzled Fei Qi, but now that the die was cast, he had no choice but to proceed.
Then Fezzi shouted, "Attack!"
