Landlady who likes to hoard land
Chapter 7 Infinite Sorrow
Xu Wen was already used to his parents' arguments. This topic would be brought up in their home every now and then, and every time it was brought up, his parents would have a big fight.
He quickly finished his meal and returned to his room.
"Mom, please stop arguing. I can walk by myself. I'm not afraid of getting tired."
Xu Yao cried bitterly, not wanting his parents to argue because of him.
Wang Chengyu held her son and burst into tears.
Every time we argue, it's like this: one of us acts like a madman, and the other is as still as a stone.
You can argue all you want, he'll listen, but then he'll continue doing the same thing as before, he just won't change.
Every argument revolves around the same issues, and every argument ends with roughly the same result.
Even though I know arguing won't get me anywhere, I still can't help but get angry.
Wang Chengyu shut down the fire; this kind of life is utterly meaningless!
After each argument, Wang Chengyu would think, "Is this what the old folks mean by 'arguing when you're poor and hungry'?"
She was deeply disgusted with her current life. She felt like a madwoman, ready to go hysterical at any moment because of a single word from Xu Jianren.
She even thought about dying, but what about her parents? What about her son? This kind of life is so tiring. She secretly vowed that she would never be a human again in her next life.
It was really unsafe for Xu Yao to walk alone at night, especially since the school was strictly investigating after-school tutoring institutions.
There was nothing I could do; after only a few days at the kindergarten, I had to tell the principal I was resigning and go home.
Later, Wang Chengyu thought about working at a tutoring center, but that would mean her eldest son wouldn't have dinner. Middle school students already work long hours and are very busy, so she couldn't let him go without a hot meal.
After that, I looked for several jobs, but either the morning hours were unsuitable or the afternoon hours were unsuitable.
"Don't look for work before the New Year. Wait until after the New Year. It'll be easier to find a job then, and when it gets cold, the kids will have a hot meal when they come home."
When I called Wang's mother that day, I offered her this advice.
"Okay, I'm not in a rush, I'll take my time. Mom, Chengqing said your stomach isn't feeling well, have you gone to get it checked?"
Hearing from his sister that their mother hadn't been feeling well these past few days, Wang Chengyu thought he'd make a phone call to check on her.
"It's nothing. I had a miscarriage when I was younger and it wasn't completely expelled. I had a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure. I've felt uncomfortable sometimes since then. It's probably because I'm tired from harvesting rice recently. I'll take some anti-inflammatory medicine and I'll be fine."
"You should really take some time to get an ultrasound; you can't be careless."
"I'll go after I'm done in the fields," Mrs. Wang replied.
"Don't be angry with Jianren. Your argument is upsetting for Xu Wen and Xu Yao too. For the sake of the children, life goes on. Let your sister-in-law rant and rave; we can't hear her anyway. Rubbing others is rubbing yourself, so don't be angry."
"Okay, Mom, you go eat now. I'll hang up now."
Wang Chengyu didn't want to discuss this topic and ended the call with her mother.
I was thinking of urging my mother to go to the hospital for a check-up in a few days.
Before she could call back, Wang Chengqing called.
"Sister, Mom keeps saying her stomach is uncomfortable. She had an ultrasound at the town hospital, but they couldn't find anything wrong. The medicine she took isn't helping either."
Today, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law took the prescription to a specialist at their hospital. They said my mother's illness is quite serious and that we should go to their hospital for another check-up first thing tomorrow morning.
My brother is taking Mom tomorrow. If you're free, you should come with her too, but I can't get time off work.
"If I have time, I'll go directly to the hospital tomorrow."
Wang Chengyu couldn't remember what the two said after that.
All I remember is that Wang Chengqing said the doctor said it was quite serious, but I don't know exactly how serious it was.
I thought about calling Wang's mother, but then I decided against it. I figured she probably couldn't explain it clearly herself. Anyway, I'll go to the hospital tomorrow and hear what the doctor has to say.
The bright autumn sun shone down, making Wang Chengyu dizzy and disoriented. She wondered why the sun was so glaring today. The autumn sun was blazing, but she felt that her limbs were still cold and numb.
She squinted, shook her head, and forced herself to look at her brother, who was a few steps away.
They moved quickly, closely following Wang Chenggong's steps towards the film and television building.
Standing at 187 cm tall, Wang Chenggong's back looked desolate under the glaring sunlight, his shoulders slightly hunched. Despite the fine weather, it inexplicably sent chills down one's spine.
Just now in the outpatient hall, Wang Chenggong's short sentence, "The doctor said it might be a bad illness," seemed to carry an immense weight.
The pressure was so intense that Wang Chengyu could hardly breathe. She could only mechanically follow Wang Chenggong's steps, as if falling behind by a few steps would mean being completely overwhelmed by immense grief.
"Chengyu, slow down."
A weak and tired voice came from behind.
Looking back with a start, I was shocked to see how old my mother, who was over sixty, had become. Her half-black and half-white hair lay lifelessly on her head.
The mother was wearing a dark green wool coat and black pants.
This coat was bought for her by Wang Chengyu when she got married. After all these years, it is still in perfect condition, which shows that her mother rarely wears it.
The pale and thin mother, with her hands supporting her belly, struggled to move her legs, which were turned outwards, trying her best to keep up with her two children.
The strong-willed Mrs. Wang would never have called out to them unless she was truly unable to catch up.
Wang Chengyu suppressed the tears welling up in her eyes. Upon hearing the tragic news, she was so overwhelmed with grief that she momentarily forgot about her mother, who needed care the most right now.
"Brother, you go ahead and join the queue. Mom and I will walk slowly."
"Remember to take the elevator to the fourth floor."
Wang Chenggong turned back and gave a brief instruction before hurrying onward. His flustered figure revealed that he was trying his best to suppress his pain.
Wang Chengyu turned around and took a few steps to firmly support his mother.
"Mom, let's slow down."
"Eh"
The mother gave a heavy reply, let out a long breath, leaned on her daughter beside her, and struggled to move forward.
Seeing her mother's difficult state, Wang Chengyu could no longer hold back and turned her head away, letting tears silently stream down her face. The bitter taste instantly brought her back to her senses.
I quietly wiped away my tears and tightly supported my mother as we entered the imaging building. We took the elevator to the fourth-floor CT room.
When we arrived, we found out that the doctor had given my mother an expedited prescription, so she didn't have to wait in line. After receiving the booster shot, it would be my mother's turn in a little while.
"You wait outside. Have your brother come in with me; there's radiation."
Even at a time like this, her mother was still concerned about such trivial matters. Her mother's thoughtfulness brought tears to Wang Chengyu's eyes once again.
"Okay, you can go in now."
Wang Chenggong was already dressed in protective clothing and waiting inside. His mother, supporting her pregnant belly, walked in, and the door slowly closed.
Holding her mother's coat, Wang Chengyu paced anxiously back and forth.
Although she knew the doctor's words were probably true, even the best doctors can make mistakes, and before the results came out, she desperately hoped the doctor was wrong.
