Espionage: You're tasked with spying, but you'll blow up the Special Higher Police?
4. The Zhou siblings
After pretending to interrogate the prisoner, Zhou Hongyi glanced at the time, yawned, and said, "Ah~~~ I'm so tired. Although interrogation can break a suspect, it's really exhausting. Brother Wang, could you please tell the captain tomorrow that I might get up a little late?"
Wang Shun stood at the door, savoring a high-end cigarette. Seeing Zhou Hongyi about to leave, he hurriedly smiled and said, "Young Master Zhou, you've worked hard. Everyone else in our bureau has left, and you're still so dedicated! I'll tell the captain tomorrow morning. It's okay, you can come back after you've had enough sleep."
Wang Shun knew Zhou Hongyi's identity. Even if he hadn't given any instructions, staying up late was no big deal. It was a minor matter, and the bureau chief wouldn't have pursued it, let alone the team leader.
Zhou Hongyi laid this trap to create time for himself to meet at the coffee shop the next morning.
The Japanese army's mopping-up operation is scheduled to begin in three days, and the news needs to be spread as soon as possible so that the guerrillas can make preparations in advance.
When Zhou Hongyi walked out of the police station, there were hardly any people on the dark street. A few rickshaw drivers were gathered under a streetlamp that was lit far apart.
Zhou Hongyi hailed a rickshaw and drove to a quiet path along the Huangpu River, stopping in front of a secluded courtyard surrounded by greenery and featuring a distinctly European style.
As soon as the rickshaw arrived at the station, a dog barked, startling the driver.
"Don't be afraid, they're all tied up."
Zhou Hongyi offered a word of comfort, gave the rickshaw driver double the fare, straightened his clothes amidst the driver's grateful thanks, and rang the doorbell.
"Beep beep beep~~~~"
Soon, a woman in her fifties rushed out to open the door for Zhou Hongyi, calling out loudly, "Madam~~~ the second young master is back~~~"
The owner of this villa is Zhou Hongyi's older sister, Zhou Hongfei.
When she first entered the entertainment industry, she changed her name to Zhou Pan'er. However, after she got together with Ding Mocun, she stopped showing her face in public and instead lived the life of a wealthy woman.
This small villa was purchased for her by Ding Mocun, who also hired a servant, a driver, and a maid to serve her.
Zhou Pan'er doted on her younger brother. Since their parents were not in the country and her brother had only recently graduated from West Point, the two siblings relied on each other for support. In addition, the house was spacious and had many rooms, so at her insistence, Zhou Hongyi moved in.
Zhou Hongyi's older sister was naturally beautiful and generous, with a slender figure and tall stature. She had never suffered any hardship since childhood, and her skin was naturally fair and delicate. Furthermore, being pampered by Ding Mocun every day, her complexion was rosy and made her look even more noble.
She was wearing a silk nightgown with a scarf draped over her shoulders. Standing at the door, she said, "Zhongliang, why are you so late? Does your police station not treat its people like human beings? Even the dockworkers don't work like this."
Zhongliang is Zhou Hongyi's courtesy name and also his nickname, which is used as a nickname between his siblings.
"Sis, why aren't you asleep yet? I'm an adult now. You don't need to wait for me to come back every day before you rest. Staying up late is bad for your skin. Come on, let's go inside."
Zhou Hongyi held Zhou Pan'er's shoulders affectionately, and the two walked back to the Western-style building together.
But Zhou Pan'er said, "Even if you're seventy or eighty years old, you're still my brother. With Mom and Dad not around, it's natural for me, as your older sister, to take care of you. Have you eaten yet? Probably not. Wang Ma, go and make a bowl of wontons for the second young master."
The maid, Wang Ma, agreed and hurried to the kitchen, while Zhou Hongyi sprawled out on the European-style sofa and reached for the pastries on the coffee table.
"Crack~"
Zhou Pan'er slapped her younger brother's hand and said sternly, "How old are you? Go wash your hands first, then you can eat."
"Yes, yes, sir~~~"
Zhou Hongyi reluctantly stood up and playfully saluted his sister.
A moment later, a servant brought over a bowl of wontons. Zhou Hongyi ate while Zhou Pan'er sat opposite him watching.
“Zhongliang, you’re already twenty-two. It’s about time you found a girlfriend. With your looks and qualities, it’s not good to just laze around all day. Since Mom and Dad aren’t around, I, as your older sister, will take charge. Tomorrow, go find those ladies and ask them to help you find a suitable match. They can keep an eye on you for me.”
Zhou Hongyi raised his hands, pleading, "Sister, please forgive me. I've only been at the police station for a few days, and I'm focused on building my career. I don't have time to find a girlfriend. Please don't cause me any trouble. Um, I'm new to the police station and don't know anyone. Although they've been quite polite to me because of my brother-in-law, I still want to treat everyone to a meal to build some rapport."
Zhou Pan'er rolled her eyes at him and said, "Are you trying to change the subject? Carrying on the family line is the most important thing. You are the only male in our Zhou family this generation."
Zhou Hongyi wiped his mouth, stood up, and made to leave.
"Sis, if we keep talking about this, I'm moving out."
"Okay, okay, I won't say anymore. Honestly, all you know how to do is threaten me... But you're right, a man should make something of himself. Was the money I gave you last time enough? I'll go get you some more."
Zhou Pan'er had no choice but to compromise with her younger brother, as there was nothing she could do about him.
She got up and went back to her bedroom. When she came out a little while later, she was carrying a beautiful wooden box with mother-of-pearl inlaid on its surface.
"Thirty silver dollars, is that enough for you to grease some palms?"
Zhou Pan'er opened the box, and inside were neatly stacked Yuan Shikai silver dollars, numbering in the hundreds.
Zhou Hongyi's eyes lit up, and he reached out to grab it.
"Thirty yuan isn't enough. I'll take one hundred yuan first. I need to maintain relationships with my colleagues, and I also need to take care of the director and the team leader."
"Crack~"
Zhou Pan'er slapped her younger brother's hand again, her expression unusually serious. "Do you really need to go to so much trouble to build relationships? Don't pick up any bad habits outside!"
Zhou Hongyi was taken aback, realizing that his sister was referring to gambling, prostitution, and drugs. He immediately patted his chest and said, "Please rest assured, leader. I, Zhou Hongyi, am a man who does great things. I would never touch anything I shouldn't."
"Hmph~ That's more like it, but I still believe you on this point. Take this money, eat and go to bed early."
Zhou Pan'er really dotes on her younger brother; she gives him 100 yuan whenever he asks for it.
Zhou Hongyi stuffed the money into his pocket and deliberately rubbed his head against Zhou Pan'er's shoulder a few times, saying in a coquettish tone, "My sister is the best to me~~~ Now that you mention it, I'm really a little tired. I want to sleep in a little longer tomorrow morning, so don't call me for breakfast."
After Zhou Hongyi finished speaking, he turned around and ran upstairs, went into his room, and slammed the door shut.
"Hey you..."
Zhou Pan'er wanted to say something, but Zhou Hongyi didn't give her the chance.
"Honestly, he's so old but still acts like a child."
Although Zhou Pan'er complained, her eyes were full of doting. She even told the servants not to disturb the second young master the next morning so that he could sleep in.
Zhou Hongyi locked the door from the inside, knelt down beside the bed, pulled out a tin box from under the bed, and put the hundred silver dollars inside.
This was his "emergency safe," which contained a lot of silver dollars, two boxes of aspirin, a Browning M1910 bought on the black market, some bullets, and some trench coats and hats for disguise.
Having laid the groundwork for his plan to sleep in late, Zhou Hongyi began loading bullets one by one into the magazine. Although his movements were slightly clumsy, he had plenty of time.
He is going to the rendezvous point tomorrow morning to meet with "Bodhi," the superior of "Mingjing," and he must be fully prepared.
