Chapter 2 Panacea
The villagers looked at Lu Yao, who had suddenly appeared in the courtyard, their faces full of doubt, and all their eyes turned to Old Yang, the village head.
"This is Lu, a scholar who is temporarily staying in our home."
Old Yang quickly explained to everyone.
"Young Master Lu has traveled far and wide and is very knowledgeable. I wonder if he can find a way to save this child."
Old Yang looked at Lu Yao with hopeful eyes, hoping that he could come up with a solution.
"Then I'll give it a try."
Just as Lu Yao was about to step forward to check on the child's condition, Doctor Xiao suddenly reached out and stopped him.
"Practicing medicine and saving lives is no child's play; if one acts rashly, the consequences will be unimaginable."
Doctor Xiao glanced at Old Yang and said with a frown.
"That's right. Everyone has their own expertise. Being good at studying doesn't necessarily mean you can be a doctor."
Seeing someone challenging his master's authority, the disciple beside Physician Xiao spoke sarcastically.
After listening to what Doctor Xiao and his apprentice said, the surrounding villagers felt that it made a lot of sense, so they began to whisper among themselves.
"Exactly, this person wasn't dead to begin with, but after being treated by this amateur, who will be responsible if he dies?"
"Yeah yeah"
……
Listening to the villagers' discussion, Lu Yao turned to look at Old Yang and shrugged.
"Enough! Stop making noise! What kind of behavior is this!"
Old Yang has served as the village head for decades, and his authority remains. When the villagers see him get angry, they immediately stop talking.
"Young Master Lu, this child is in critical condition. Please take a look."
Old Yang took a deep breath, deciding to try anything, even if it seemed hopeless.
"Mr. Lu, please save my son! If anything happens, I will not blame anyone else; it's all for my son's life!"
The woman, holding her child, knelt before Lu Yao and pleaded.
Lu Yao then nodded and looked at the child.
Since I'll be staying here for the night, I'll consider it a way of repaying the kindness of letting me stay.
The child was pale, sweat beaded on his forehead, his whole body trembled, and his lips were pale and bloodless.
Lu Yao placed his hand on the forehead, and it was indeed burning hot.
"This child has caught a cold and has a fever."
Lu Yao stood up and spoke.
"What fever? Nonsense! You're just showing off." Doctor Xiao's apprentice curled his lip upon hearing Lu Yao's words.
Lu Yao ignored him, and simply flipped his palm over, revealing a white pill.
It was ibuprofen tablets, an antipyretic.
"This is a pill that I received by chance from a Taoist priest when I was studying in the lower reaches of the river. It has the effect of relieving pain and curing diseases."
Upon hearing this, Physician Xiao frowned slightly, but did not stop him, and gestured for his apprentice to also stop talking.
In the Qin Dynasty, Taoist priests and physicians were not separate entities; a skilled Taoist priest was always a skilled physician, and such people were called Fangshi (方士).
Old Yang and his wife immediately brought over a bowl of water and fed the child the pills.
Soon after, the child who took the medicine gradually calmed down and was no longer as rapid and restless as before.
Her little face gradually turned rosy.
Lu Yao nodded; modern medicine really does work quickly.
"The child should be fine now. Go back and drink plenty of water and rest. He should recover in a few days."
Lu Yao stood up and whispered instructions to the woman.
"Thank you, Mr. Lu. Thank you, Mr. Lu."
The woman was so moved that she quickly thanked him.
"Truly miraculous! What kind of miraculous medicine is this that can instantly revive a dying person!"
"Incredible, could it be a magic pill?"
"This young master Lu must have encountered a deity."
The surrounding villagers were all incredibly shocked to see Lu Yao cure the person with just one pill.
……
"Now that the patient is out of danger, my apprentice and I will take our leave."
Knowing he had no face to stay any longer, Doctor Xiao bowed and took his leave from Old Yang.
Old Yang hurriedly got up and personally saw Doctor Xiao and his apprentice off, since Doctor Xiao was a highly respected figure in the village.
"Everyone, don't all stand here, go home and rest."
After seeing off Doctor Xiao and his apprentice, Old Yang told the gathered villagers to disperse.
He instructed two villagers to escort the woman and child back.
"I must thank Young Master Lu for the miraculous medicine, otherwise the child would have been in danger."
Old Yang was filled with gratitude and sincerely thanked Lu Yao.
“It’s alright. Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. I can’t just stand by and watch this child get hurt.”
Lu Yao felt that curing a cold was not a big deal; it was only in ancient times, when medicine was underdeveloped, that modern medicine was so precious.
After exchanging a few brief pleasantries with Old Yang, Lu Yao returned to his side room to continue resting.
……
As dawn broke, the light mist gradually dissipated, and the crowing of roosters echoed through the village.
Lu Yao bid farewell to Old Yang and his wife and embarked on his journey to Xianyang following the route they had indicated.
After walking for several hours, Lu Yao felt a little tired, so he rested for a while under the shade of a tree by the roadside.
He took out a bottle of mineral water from his storage space, drank it all in one gulp, and then let out a deep sigh of relief.
"This way of going isn't going to work. We'll have to buy a horse when we get to the county town."
Lu Yao rubbed his calves. As a typical modern person, the long hike did make him feel uncomfortable.
It takes about twenty days to travel from Yingchuan County to Xianyang on horseback.
Just as Lu Yao was about to continue forward, several masked men suddenly surrounded him from all sides.
"Kid! I'm robbing you, but I won't kill you. Hand over everything you have, and I'll spare your life!"
The burly man at the head of the group carried a large sword on his shoulder and grinned menacingly at Lu Yao.
Lu Yao looked around at the robbers, his brows furrowed. The security in the Qin Dynasty was terrible; he encountered robbers as soon as he stepped outside.
Without wasting words, Lu Yao took out a pistol from his storage space and fired a shot at the burly man in front of him.
After purchasing the firearms, Lu Yao trained for a period of time. While he wouldn't say he was a perfect shot, he could hit targets at close range without any problem.
"boom!"
With a gunshot, the burly man in front of him fell to the ground, letting out a painful scream.
"Ouch! It hurts! It hurts so much!"
The bullet struck the big man in the leg, and the intense pain made him roll on the ground.
"Oh no, it's a hidden weapon! Quick, get the boss!"
The robbers surrounding Lu Yao rushed forward as soon as they saw the miserable state of the fallen robber.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!..."
Lu Yao fired rapidly in all directions until he emptied the magazine of his pistol before stopping.
Lu Yao was panting heavily. This was the first time he had ever fired a gun. His blood was rushing through his body, making him extremely excited.
Several robbers around him were lying on the ground, screaming in agony.
"A gun is fast from seven paces away, and both fast and accurate within seven paces."
After reloading his pistol, Lu Yao walked over to the robber leader.
He had stopped screaming, and his hands were pressed against his wounds, cold sweat pouring down his face.
"Hero, spare our lives! We were deceived and misled into coming to ambush you. Please spare our lives!"
As Lu Yao approached, the bandit leader immediately knelt down and begged for mercy.
"Oh? Tell me what you know."
When Lu Yao heard that someone was giving instructions, he raised an eyebrow. When had he offended anyone? He had no recollection of it.
The bandit leader dared not hide anything and immediately told them everything he knew.
Good heavens! It was Doctor Xiao who ordered these men to ambush him, their purpose being the medicine on his person.
Yesterday, when I saw the pills that Lu Yao took out in Old Yang's courtyard, I thought they were some kind of magic pill and became greedy.
They contacted local bandits, intending to rob the goods.
"Hmph! I'll remember this grudge!"
Lu Yao was furious. He had saved someone, yet it had brought him a deadly disaster. Doctor Xiao, huh? He would make him pay for it sooner or later!
After understanding the situation, Lu Yao ignored the robbers and continued on his way. He figured they were lucky to survive being shot.
