Chapter 64 Qualifying Round - 1-shot Advancement
The World Championships have begun, with the men's marathon kicking off the competition on the morning of the 25th.
Kenyan star Kibet won the first gold medal at the 11th World Athletics Championships with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 59 seconds. Kalmar's Shami finished second, nearly two minutes behind. Surprisingly, Swiss runner Rosling remained in the leading group throughout the final sprint, keeping pace with the two runners ahead until he was pulled away by Shami just one kilometer before entering the stadium. Rosling ultimately finished third, securing a bronze medal in a long-distance running event dominated by Africans.
Five Chinese athletes participated, and due to their relative abilities, their best result ranked 33rd among all athletes. However, the men's marathon is not a popular event for the track and field team.
The second event was the men's shot put. Because Osaka is currently experiencing high temperatures, the organizing committee has scheduled competitions throughout the morning, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m.
The shot put qualifying rounds will be held in the morning. To reduce unnecessary exertion for top athletes, qualifying rounds are held for field events at every major track and field competition. Only athletes whose scores exceed the qualifying threshold will advance to the finals. If there are fewer than 12 athletes who exceed the qualifying threshold, the remaining spots will be filled by athletes whose scores are ranked from highest to lowest.
Although passing the qualifying line guarantees advancement to the finals, generally no more than 12 players will exceed the qualifying line. The technical staff setting the qualifying line considers the players' performance that year and the situation on the day of the competition, and in principle, no more than 12 players will participate in the finals.
The 40 athletes participating in the qualifying round were divided into two groups and took turns throwing at each other on opposite sides of the track and field.
The qualifying standard for the final was set at 20.10 meters. As soon as this standard was announced, Lu Wei laughed, saying that such a result was easy to pass.
However, after the order of the trial throws was announced, Lu Wei shook his head helplessly. There were 20 people in a group, and Lu Wei was ranked 15th to try. According to the calculation that each person would spend 1 minutes, it would take 20 minutes for Lu Wei to go on stage.
The United States is undoubtedly the strongest country in this event. They sent four team members to the competition, with Hoffa and Adam Wilson considered the biggest favorites to win the championship.
Lu Wei was placed in Group B, along with Shimakawa Takayuki, the Japanese team member he had seen in the gym yesterday. After watching Shimakawa's attempt, Lu Wei finally understood why he hadn't dared to attempt the 150kg bench press yesterday.
Shimakawa's skills are mediocre, and his mental fortitude seems lacking; he's probably a complete novice with no competition experience. His throwing technique is very simple: a back-sliding throw.
The simpler the technique, the higher the requirement for the athlete's core strength. Shimakawa did not seem to have very good core strength, and his footwork was too scattered when he threw. His first throw was only 17.5 meters.
"So bad, I could beat him even standing still..." After warming up, Lu Wei had nothing to do, so he sat in a chair and watched the other team members' games. If he hadn't met them a few days ago, Lu Wei would never have paid attention to the Asian athletes' games.
The reason is simple: Asian athletes are indeed not very strong in throwing events.
Perhaps due to the nature of large-scale competitions, many seemingly strong players struggle to perform at their normal level, making it easy for superior opponents to spot them.
Hoffa, the seventh American player to compete, qualified first. This player looked to be no more than 1.8 meters tall, covered in fat and flab, and looked like a square with a head.
Hoffa was of average height, but had very large hands; the shot put looked like a small ball in his hands. Hoffa held the shot put between his chin and stood with his back to the edge of the throwing area. Lu Wei felt that his upper body almost covered half of the throwing area.
He took a breath and then roared. He then spun one and a half times, using the acceleration from the spin to propel the shot put forward.
Don't let his bulky appearance fool you; this turn reveals his true strength. He possesses excellent core strength, fluid footwork during the spin, and a good angle for releasing the shot put.
The shot put landed significantly beyond the qualifying line marked by the referee. Upon seeing his score, Hoffa roared again and turned to leave the field with his sports bag before the referee could announce the result.
His throw was 20.89 meters, which shows that he held back, but he still easily advanced to the final.
The next competitor, Dutch athlete Rodger Smith, also advanced to the final with a throw of 21.04 meters. Lu Wei estimated that his opponent was taller than him, probably close to 2 meters tall, making him a giant in the human world.
The next competitor, German athlete Ralf Bartels, barely made it through the qualifying rounds. He wasn't particularly strong, but his core strength was excellent.
After waiting for nearly 30 minutes, it was finally my turn to go on stage.
Holding the shot put, Lu Wei faced away from the throwing area, silently reviewing the key points of the throw. Because he hadn't practiced the back-rotation method for long, Lu Wei always reviewed the left and right details of the throw before practicing, to avoid getting used to incorrect movements that he wouldn't be able to correct later.
Place the shot put on your chin, then slowly rotate it slightly in the opposite direction. Next, use your left foot as a pivot and rotate it quickly, alternating between your left and right feet as pivots during the rotation. After one and a half rotations, use the momentum generated by the rotation to launch the shot put. At this point, Lu Wei didn't forget to flick the shot put with his index finger to increase its rotation in the air.
When Lu Wei launched the shot put, he almost lost his balance because he used too much force. Fortunately, he managed to use his core strength to continue rotating at the last moment and forcefully turned his right leg back from outside the throwing area, so that he stood inside the throwing arc.
"Wow!" The audience gasped in surprise as they followed Lu Wei's movements.
"Phew, that was close!" Lu Wei breathed a sigh of relief. He turned his head to the throwing area. His throw had passed the qualifying line, but because his movements were not yet proficient, his score should be only slightly above the qualifying line.
At this moment, the referee raised a white flag, indicating that the trial throw was valid. Immediately afterwards, the big screen in the arena displayed Lu Wei's score: 20.62 meters. He was the first athlete in his group to pass the qualifying round.
At this moment, the entire stadium erupted in applause for Lu Wei. Lu Wei excitedly pumped his fist towards the stands; the feeling of competing in a world-class tournament was indeed much more exciting.
After the shot put qualifying rounds, eight athletes surpassed the qualifying line of 20.15 meters and advanced directly to the next round. The remaining four qualifying spots were filled by athletes with the next highest scores.
Lu Wei became the sole Asian representative in the shot put final.
