Chapter 61 A strong opponent

"Look at this place, it's rained twice in half an hour. There's a lot of water in Osaka, haha!" One of the coaches said, and the men next to him laughed.

"Lu Wei, why are they laughing?" A young woman participating in the 4x100m relay thought for a moment, not understanding what it meant, and turned to ask Lu Wei. Because they had been training together for the past few days, she and Lu Wei had become quite familiar with each other, so after hearing this, she patted Lu Wei on the shoulder in the row in front of her.

“…If you want to know, go ask them.” After Lu Wei answered the question, the coaches behind him burst into loud laughter again.

No matter where you are, middle-aged men are terrifying creatures.

After encountering traffic jams, everyone started entertaining themselves. Just as they entered the city center, Osaka's traffic became congested.

After being stuck in traffic for several minutes, the bus was finally able to move forward again.

Lu Wei looked out the window and realized that there were a lot of people in Japan. He hadn't noticed it when they were in the suburbs. But as they got closer to the city center, they could feel the high population density of this city, even higher than Shanghai.

"Judging from the way the pedestrians are, it doesn't seem like the rumors say that people are cold and indifferent. Look at that shop owner, he's selling food and he's talking so much to the passersby, is that fair?" Wang Qiao was also visiting Japan for the first time, so the city overview she had heard about was from others.

"You've probably heard about Tokyo, right? People there are all focused on their careers and are workaholics, so the whole city feels quite oppressive. My impression of Osaka is that it's more about socializing." Coach Jiang had been to Osaka before when he led his team to competitions, so he was familiar with the city.

Lu Wei felt that this city was quite interesting. One moment it was ancient architecture, and the next place immediately had the image of a modern metropolis. Perhaps because of the need to save space, there were very few particularly large shops in the city, and most of them were small shops.

The hotel where the Chinese delegation stayed was not far from the Nagai Stadium in Osaka, which served as a venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

After having dinner at the hotel that evening, the relay team members discussed going to the stadium to check it out. Team rules stipulated that leaving the stadium without permission during major competitions was a violation, and with the competition imminent, they thought they should visit the stadium first.

Upon arriving at the stadium, the group saw a team practicing the 4x100m relay. Judging from their build and skin color, they knew they were members of the host nation, Japan.

Several team members ran the entire course. Despite it being training, the first runner still gave it his all when the starting gun fired, as if he were competing in a world championship. The first leg wasn't a long distance; he handed the baton to the second runner not far after the bend.

When the first runner was about 15 meters away from the second runner, the second runner started running. Just as the first runner was about to pass the baton, he shouted, and the second runner immediately extended his arm backward. This baton exchange took place entirely at high speed. When the second runner received the baton, he was only about one meter away from the relay zone, at which point he had already accelerated to his maximum speed.

"Wow, these two are amazing! They run like one person!" Hu Huo was amazed by the scene. Putting aside their individual abilities, their baton-passing ability would probably be hard to beat anywhere in the world.

The second runner took the baton and ran with all his might, letting out a roar halfway through. Several people around Lu Wei exclaimed, "This Japanese guy's spirit is really something! He doesn't seem like he's just started training!"

The handover between the second and third runners was also very smooth, with no noticeable pause.

It's clear that the third runner had good cornering technique. He stayed close to the inside of the track line throughout the 100 meters. Although his speed wasn't very fast, his rhythm was very smooth.

When the third and fourth batons were handed over, the Chinese relay team was not far away. Everyone could see this handover most clearly. The fourth runner almost touched the baton in the relay zone and reached almost the peak speed after receiving the baton.

After the fourth runner finished, he happily said something to his first-runner teammate.

Just as he was speaking, he caught a glimpse of someone on the sidelines out of the corner of his eye. When he turned around and saw Lu Wei and his group, he immediately stopped smiling, his face turned long, and when his eyes met Lu Wei's, he revealed a fierce expression.

A disdainful smile appeared on his face as he loudly addressed the staff in a reproachful tone.

The staff member kept nodding and bowing to him, clearly apologizing. After receiving new instructions, he walked towards the direction where the relay team was standing.

"Well, we're not going to see it!" said Liu Lei, the translator who came out with them. He had already understood the conversation between the two people.

The staff member came over to everyone, nodded, and then spoke to a few people in Japanese. Although his voice was not loud, you could tell that his attitude was very firm.

After exchanging a few words with the staff present, Liu Lei said to a few people, "He is a staff member at the stadium. This stadium is not open to the public today. Only the Japanese team can train here. He hopes we can leave the stadium quickly. The training field next door can be provided for everyone to train for free."

It seems they're giving the host country special treatment, not allowing them to practice or watch.

"Hu Huo, do you know that old man who's in the fourth leg of the race?" Lu Wei took a few steps, then remembered the look in the fourth runner's eyes and felt a little annoyed. Hu Huo had the most international competition experience of the four; if he didn't have an answer, then there was no point in asking the others.

"This person is Nobuharu Asahara. He used to be the number one figure in the Japanese 100-meter event. He is now 35 years old and is running the fourth leg. It seems that he is in very good condition."

"He's just a semi-retired player with mediocre skills, what's he so arrogant about? He really thinks too highly of himself." Lu Wei thought to himself. He noticed that all the Japanese people he had met here had this kind of self-important attitude.

However, the Japanese team's relay just now really showed their skill. Their strength is not due to the individual abilities of the players, but because the baton exchanges between the four runners were so smooth that they were like one person. Except for a slight pause between the second and third runners, the exchanges between the other runners were incredibly fluid.

The Japanese team's strength is only in the top eight. It seems that the Chinese relay team will face unimaginable challenges if they want to achieve their desired results.
