Chapter 37: The 4x400m Battle Begins
At this point, Lu Wei walked out of the throwing area, and the referee raised the red flag. Having already won the championship, playing some games to entertain the audience is understandable, but having a valid score of just over 50 meters is really meaningless; having fun is what matters.
Today, Lu Wei also has one more event to participate in, the 4x400m relay. Team relay races often electrify the entire stadium, especially when held last, as they can bring the competition to a climax.
With about two hours to go before the competition, Yu Weiming gathered the relay team members back to the training field to warm up.
There isn't much to practice in the 400-meter relay. The requirements for the athletes during the baton exchange are not high. After the exchange, the positioning mainly depends on the athletes' adaptability.
So after warming up, everyone did their final practice under the guidance of their respective coaches. The relay team had also practiced together during training, so the baton exchange was fine. It is said that the four members of the world champion American team basically don't practice, just run a couple of laps a few days before the competition to get used to each other's habits. The strength of the team members is the key to winning or losing in this event.
Lu Wei continued to improve his cornering technique. With the competition approaching, he didn't have much time or energy to train at full strength, so he only used about 80% of his effort to practice cornering.
Seeing Lu Wei's cornering run, Ningcheng's other two coaches, Zhou Hu and Sun Jun, walked over to Wang Qiao's side.
"This kid's cornering skills seem even better than in the finals, much better than back in Ningcheng. I never noticed before, Lao Wang! With this kid around, you're no longer just Lao Wang next door, you've completely turned your life around, haha!" Zhou Hu never missed an opportunity to tease Wang Qiao.
However, Lu Wei's cornering performance really surprised him. Previously, Lu Wei had just used both legs to push off the corners without any strategy. Although this kind of brute force had defeated his teammates, in Zhou Hu's mind, Lu Wei was still just a young man who relied on his physical abilities to do whatever he wanted.
When Lu Wei participated in the finals, his cornering ability had improved, but it was still relatively weak, even compared to Wu Bin.
Seeing Lu Wei practicing cornering today, I feel he has improved a lot; his cornering technique is now comparable to Hu Yuan's. This rate of improvement is somewhat frightening…
Sun Jun was full of praise for Lu Wei at this point. He envied Lu Wei's physical fitness and Wang Qiao's luck, complaining that he was not so lucky to meet an athlete like Lu Wei.
At this time, all the team members participating in the 400-meter relay had gathered at the training field. The scene was lively, and familiar team members from different teams greeted each other frequently during their warm-up.
Yu Weiming gathered the team members who participated in the preliminary rounds and the three coaches together to give a final speech before the competition: "Coaches and team members, thank you for your hard work during this period. Some of you have achieved satisfactory results in the competition, and some of you even have three gold medals around your necks. However, some of you did not even have a chance to play before."
Since we've put in the effort, we should reap the rewards. We're here to compete for honor, not to promote sportsmanship or boost someone else's popularity.
After saying this, Yu Weiming looked at Lu Wei and then at Wu Bin: "The 400-meter relay has never been our strong suit, but that's all in the past. A few coaches and I did some calculations, and today Lu Wei's appearance puts us in the championship contention group. I can't go into the details of the race, but what I want to say is that such opportunities are rare in life, and we should seize them when they come. Run well, give those sports powerhouses a good slap in the face, and the day of glory is just around the corner."
The 4x400m preliminary round is divided into 3 groups. The top 2 teams in each group advance directly to the final, and the two teams with the best results also qualify for the final.
Ningcheng, along with Beijing and Chongqing, two traditionally strong teams, were placed in the first group. Shanghai, Hebei, and Shandong, three strong teams, were placed in the second group. The third group also included traditionally strong teams like Guangdong and Sichuan.
In the first group of races, Ningcheng was assigned to lane 2, Beijing to lane 3, and Chongqing to lane 7. None of the strong teams were assigned to the best lanes. However, in the preliminary rounds, lane assignments were not taken too seriously, as the relay races were mainly about strength.
Ningcheng's batting order was: Tang Yang first, Wu Bin second, Hu Yuan third, and Lu Wei last.
With the competition in its final two days, the referee team had become adept at organizing the races and coordinating with each other, and even the relay races were quickly arranged for check-in and positioning.
With the sound of the starting gun, the 4x400m relay began.
Ningcheng's first runner, Tang Yang, had a well-rounded ability and a stable start, making him evenly matched with the Beijing team in lane 3 on the first straight. The Chongqing team in lane 7 fielded a formidable first runner who charged forward with explosive energy from the start.
The first runners of the three teams are clearly more capable than the other teams, and they are closing in on the runners in the right lane at a speed that can be seen with the naked eye.
"If this Chongqing team member runs like this for the first 200 meters, what's the point of him? I didn't see how strong he was during the individual competition!" Although Yu Weiming had gone through a short period of mental blankness today, his basic IQ had returned to normal, but he was not very familiar with the specific details of the competition.
Wang Qiao initially wanted to explain, but then thought better of it; he had already said enough today. Zhou Hu, standing beside him, chimed in: "In relay races, it's difficult to predict a team member's performance using the logic of individual races. In team races, it's very possible for team members to perform beyond their usual level."
Yu Weiming nodded thoughtfully.
As they entered the final straight, the Chongqing team, which had a significant lead, slowed down, while the Beijing team and Tang Yang quickly closed the gap. Although he was still in the lead, the second runner could only take over the lane after entering the straight, so the three teams were essentially evenly matched.
Unexpectedly, in the last 10 meters, the Chongqing team members seemed to have been given a shot of adrenaline, bursting out with energy once again, gritting their teeth and persevering, preventing their opponents from catching up with them.
"These guys from Chongqing have guts!" Wang Qiao couldn't help but exclaim. The fact that they could hold on with that kind of physical strength was basically all thanks to their willpower, which is what makes team competitions so appealing.
After the second leg entered the straight, the Beijing and Chongqing team members were basically on the same level. Although the Chongqing team member was slightly ahead, they had to move laterally from lane 7 to lane 1 when merging.
The second batter for the Chongqing team was still hot-tempered, risking a collision and fall with a Beijing teammate to forcefully cut into the inside lane.
His momentum as he merged was so fierce that the second runner from the Beijing team didn't dare to push his way through, taking second place and sticking close to him, ready to pounce at any moment. Wu Bin was about 2 meters behind them, in third place. The top three teams had a long lead over the next five teams, and the final battle would be fought between these three teams.
The Beijing team successfully overtook the Beijing team on the curve, but in the last 100 meters, the Chongqing team overtook them again, and the lead changed hands twice.
Wu Bin was significantly behind the other two runners in this leg, falling more than 5 meters behind them as they approached the finish line.
The third batter is Ningcheng's strongest batting order, and Ningcheng hopes to use these two batting orders to achieve a comeback.
