Orc Undead Sports Warrior
Chapter 15 Little Wolf, Don't Be Afraid
Three days after the Ningcheng Track and Field Championships concluded, the prize money was deposited into Lu Wei's bank account. Naturally, training in preparation for the national competition immediately commenced.
In preparation for this national competition, Ningcheng has gathered the district's best track and field athletes for pre-competition training.
The provincial sports bureau leadership attached great importance to this competition, providing participating athletes with the most comprehensive training facilities in its history. For its advantageous events such as race walking and middle- and long-distance running, the provincial sports bureau hired renowned domestic coaches at great expense to conduct unified training.
For non-traditional strong events such as the 400-meter dash and shot put, the sports bureau has a more open-minded approach to training, allowing the athletes to continue their daily training under the guidance of their original coaches.
Lu Wei's simultaneous participation in the 400-meter dash and shot put, two seemingly unrelated events, gave Wang Qiao a real headache. To ensure Lu Wei's training plan was effective and practical, Wang Qiao invited Coach Jiang to work with him to provide targeted training arrangements and guidance for Lu Wei.
The final training plan was finalized: every morning, students would train explosive power and shot put techniques for no more than two and a half hours; in the afternoon, they would train in the 400-meter dash and aerobic endurance; and in the evening, they would train in the gym.
The training focus for the first two weeks was on basic movements and strength training, mainly targeting specific techniques, as well as enhancing Lu Wei's upper limb, waist, and leg strength.
Then came a month of intense, high-volume training. During this month, Lu Wei would also spend half a day each week doing mountain climbing training.
Aerobic endurance is crucial for the 400-meter race. The main reason why the United States has dominated the 400-meter event for a long time is that its training level is significantly higher than that of other countries.
These advanced training methods include enhancing the aerobic endurance of 400-meter athletes. Aerobic endurance training also promotes the breakdown of lactic acid in the final moments of the 400-meter race.
Lu Wei, Hu Yuan, and Tang Yang, who participated in the national 400-meter race, came from three different organizations. After discussion among the three coaches, they decided to use fast mountain climbing for aerobic endurance training.
Ultimately, all three coaches agreed that the southern part of the Helan Mountains was the best location for the athletes to train their aerobic endurance. There were two reasons for choosing this location: firstly, the Helan Mountains are a natural mountain range, a natural oxygen bar provided by nature, and the nutrients here help athletes recover.
Secondly, if all training is done on the track and field, it will inevitably lead to mental fatigue. Allowing athletes to relax both physically and mentally during aerobic training can actually help improve the quality of training.
From their first hike, Hu Yuan and Tang Yang realized that they were not on the same level as Lu Wei in this project. Once Lu Wei entered the primeval forest, he was like a wild horse that had broken free of its reins, and the two of them couldn't keep up with Lu Wei's pace no matter how hard they tried.
Athletes don't just stroll around like ordinary tourists; they have training requirements. Lu Wei's time going up and down the mountain was significantly longer than the other two.
After becoming familiar with the mountain conditions, Lu Wei no longer followed the conventional route of climbing up the steps, but instead freely chose his own route to have close contact with nature.
On his third visit to Helan Mountain, Lu Wei quickly shook off the two people behind him and roamed freely through the forest. Halfway through, he suddenly heard a sound like a small dog barking from the mountains. How could there be a dog in this wild forest? Had it gotten lost with its owner?
Upon hearing the sound, Lu Wei hurriedly headed deeper into the forest. After walking for five minutes, he discovered that a female wolf had accidentally stepped into a trap, her hind legs firmly caught.
After being captured, the mother wolf must have struggled to break free, resulting in a severe injury to her hind legs, leaving bloodstains on the ground. The three wolf cubs were howling incessantly beneath their mother; the sounds they had just heard were from them.
Upon seeing Lu Wei, the mother wolf mistook him for a poacher and immediately bared her teeth and growled.
When the little wolf saw someone coming, it shrank into its mother's arms in fright.
Orcs naturally live alongside wild animals, and Lu Wei has an innate affinity for them. He slowly approached the mother wolf and crouched down a short distance away to show that he meant no harm.
Seeing that Lu Wei showed no intention of aggression, the mother wolf's vigilance lowered slightly, but she still kept a close eye on his every move. Lu Wei noticed the bloodstains on the ground had dried and figured the mother wolf must have been trapped for some time, so he took out a bottle of mineral water from his backpack, intending to give her some hydration.
Seeing Lu Wei take something out of his bag, the mother wolf thought he was about to attack her. She immediately bared her teeth, growled in a low voice, and used her body to tightly protect the three wolf cubs behind her.
Lu Wei didn't rush closer. Instead, he poured mineral water on the ground and waited for the water to flow to the mother wolf. She understood that Lu Wei was giving her water. However, she still stretched her head to drink while keeping an eye on Lu Wei's every move.
The mother wolf sensed that Lu Wei meant her no harm and stopped baring her teeth at him, though she remained wary. Lu Wei then took out a thermos, filled it with water, and slowly pushed it to the mother wolf's side. After she finished drinking, he carefully refilled it. After repeating this several times, the mother wolf's attitude towards Lu Wei softened considerably, and her eyes became much gentler.
At this moment, Lu Wei slowly walked to the mother wolf's side, squatted down, and placed his hand on her head. The beastman and the mother wolf established a connection; the mother wolf had lowered her guard and was conveying her thoughts in her mind.
"I was looking for a real object for my child. His leg was injured, and he couldn't break free. It hurt a lot... My child was scared."
Lu Wei told the mother wolf, "Don't be afraid, I can help you." He then walked to the trap and pried it open. Lu Wei knew that without the prior preparation, the mother wolf would never have allowed him to get close.
After breaking free of the trap, the mother wolf stood up and tried to take a few steps. Although she limped, it was clear that she hadn't broken any bones.
The mother wolf turned around and walked towards Lu Wei, placing her paws on his leg and rubbing her head against it in gratitude.
Lu Wei placed his hand on the mother wolf's head, using his senses to bid her farewell: "I'm leaving now, but I believe we'll meet again."
The mother wolf understood Lu Wei's meaning, and limped along with her cubs into the depths of the forest, glancing back at Lu Wei every now and then.
After this incident, Lu Wei continued his training. Following communication with the sports bureau, the school agreed to give Lu Wei the green light for his competition preparations. Since arriving in this world, Lu Wei had only experienced a few days of university life.
Only when he is alone does Lu Wei think of his past life, and of his comrades who fought alongside him—those who lived and those who died.
He felt his soul had been worn down by time, and the trauma of war continued to torment him. Sometimes he thought that his comrades had perished in the war, while he had become a human being, and living such a life might be his punishment. If he had a choice, he would rather die in battle than live in self-blame and guilt.
Even Lu Wei felt confused about what this life meant to him, and now he could only take it one step at a time.
