Chapter 3 The Fate of Little Stone Grass
Wen was so angry she almost fell over. What did she mean by insisting on separating the two children? It was all because the Shi family was tormenting them.
This makes it seem as if the Xu family is the villain, and the villagers watching are pointing and gossiping about them.
Before Wen could say anything more, her second son, Xu Li, gently tugged at her sleeve:
“Mother, you can’t argue with her. Her sons won’t step in, and we younger generation can’t help her either.”
"Didn't my little sister say that a letter of divorce is fine too? Let's get it first. Xiaocao is in our Xu family. Let her try to take it from us if she dares."
Ms. Wen thought about it for a moment and realized that her second son was right. Her daughter was still at home in confinement after childbirth, and her eldest son had to take care of the younger one. They couldn't do it without someone by their side.
She stopped talking, but felt incredibly frustrated, and replied stiffly, "Let's go, let's go."
Ding raised an eyebrow, glanced smugly at her eldest daughter-in-law, and instructed her to prepare the meal at home, saying she would be right back.
Ding Guihua was furious. In the past, it was Xu Qing and her family's money-losing son who did the cooking.
After she left, she was the only woman left in the house, and all the housework fell on her shoulders.
But she didn't dare to show her dissatisfaction and happily agreed, since all the money the family earned was in her mother-in-law's hands.
She was still hoping that her mother-in-law would give her three sons money to get married in the future.
Once the matter was resolved, the villagers who had been watching the commotion dispersed to go about their own business.
Ding took Wen and Xu Gong to the village chief's house, as the village chief was the only one in the village who could write.
After writing the divorce papers, one for each person, they left the village chief's house. Ding said sarcastically:
"Return that big, worthless thing tomorrow. If you don't return it, I'll send someone to pick it up. Don't blame me for not giving you face then."
"I'm doing this for your own good. Sending it back earlier will save you a meal, won't it?"
Having received the letter of divorce, Ms. Wen no longer cared and slapped him across the face.
She said fiercely, "If you bark at me again, I'll tear your mouth apart. That's my granddaughter; she has a name."
Ding covered her face, looking at Wen in disbelief, and screamed, "You! How dare you hit me! I'll fight you to the death today!"
Xu Gong immediately stepped forward and dragged Ding Shi towards her house, saying as they walked:
“Auntie, watch your step. I know you’re worried about your granddaughter, but don’t worry, we’ll talk about it tomorrow. I’ll take you home now.”
Ding's house was at the entrance of the village. Xu Gong covered her mouth and dragged and pushed her all the way home.
Xu Gong pushed Ding into the courtyard gate, then grabbed Wen and quickly ran out of Shijia Village.
By the time I got home, it was already dark.
Xu Jian was cooking in the kitchen, and Xu Baobao was washing wild vegetables in the yard. They saw two people walking towards them from afar.
Upon closer inspection, she saw that it was her grandmother and the others who had returned. She excitedly ran to Wen Shi and said:
"Grandma, Mom changed my name to Xu Baobao now, and my little sister is called Xu Beibei. Mom said that together my sister and I mean her precious baby. Isn't that a nice name!"
Ms. Wen affectionately patted Xu Baobao's head, a smile playing on her lips, and said, "It sounded very nice. How was your mother today?"
As they spoke, the group walked into the house. Xu Baobao replied, "Mom has been sleeping all day. I just went to check on her and she hasn't woken up yet."
"I'll go check on her, Xu Gong, go chop some firewood," Madam Wen instructed in a low voice.
Xu Gong agreed and picked up his wood-chopping knife, heading down the mountain. He hadn't been hunting for the past few days, so he wanted to chop more firewood to sell for money.
Xu Baobao then went to wash the wild vegetables, while Wen Shi walked into Xu Qing's house.
Wen quietly lifted the curtain and went inside.
Xu Qing lay on the bed, and the younger one lay beside her; the mother and child were fast asleep.
The thought that Ding would take Xu Baobao back tomorrow made her feel sad.
Whether a woman divorces or is divorced, she cannot take her children with her; she is helpless.
Upon returning home, she heard that her daughter had given her granddaughter such a beautiful name. If she knew that the Shi family refused to give her daughter, she would be heartbroken.
My daughter is still in her postpartum period, so I can't be too sad. Postpartum illnesses can last a lifetime.
Wen's brows were deeply furrowed. Xu Qing sensed the sorrow in the person beside her and opened her sleepy eyes.
"Mother, you're back. How did it go? Did you get the divorce papers?"
Ms. Wen could no longer hold back her tears, which welled up in her eyes. She turned away to wipe them away.
Seeing this, Xu Qing anxiously sat up in bed, placing her hands on Wen's shoulders: "What's wrong? They refuse to give us a letter of divorce?"
"It's okay if you don't want to, Mother, I have a way, don't worry."
Ms. Wen dared not let her daughter exert any force, and following Xu Qing's hand, she turned around and said in a choked voice, "I got the divorce papers."
Xu Qing asked in confusion, "Then why is Mother still crying?"
Ms. Wen wiped her face, realizing that the Shi family would be coming to pick up the baby tomorrow, and she couldn't hide it from her daughter.
It would be better to tell your daughter in advance so that she can be mentally prepared.
Moreover, their family is indeed not as well-off as the Shi family. If the baby stays with the Shi family, at least he can get enough to eat, right?
At worst, they can visit the baby more often in the future.
"Daughter, I have something to tell you. Promise me you won't be angry or anxious, okay?"
Madam Wen looked annoyed, and Xu Qing was even more puzzled: "Mother, tell me."
"Mrs. Ding said that each of them should keep one baby; they want the baby and will come to pick her up tomorrow, while we'll keep the smaller one."
Ms. Wen changed her approach to a more tactful one, hoping to make her daughter feel better.
After saying that, she looked at her daughter nervously, afraid that her daughter would cry. Crying too much during the postpartum period can damage her eyes, so she had to be careful.
Xu Qing breathed a sigh of relief when she heard about this; it did remind her of something.
In the afternoon, she lay in bed and carefully reviewed the original owner's past. She decided to raise her two daughters well, and the first thing to do was to solve the household registration problem.
It just so happens that the Shi family previously disliked that the baby was a girl, and they had been delaying the household registration process, saying they would register it together after she gave birth to a son.
So the baby is essentially an unregistered resident now. As long as she gets the divorce papers, she can go to the village head and register her two daughters under his household registration.
Xu Qing smiled and said to Madam Wen, "Mother, Bao Bao and Bei Bei are both my precious daughters. I love them just as much as you love me. I can't live without them."
Upon hearing this, Wen was about to burst into tears again, but Xu Qing quickly added, "There is a solution to this. Take the letter of divorce to the village head now."
"Make him register his two daughters' household registrations under my name, so that even if the Shi family comes, they can't take them away."
Ms. Wen didn't understand these written things, but she trusted her daughter, so she immediately got up and went outside again.
Wen was in a hurry and bumped into Xu Baobao, who was standing outside, as soon as she lifted the curtain.
She didn't have time to comfort the child; she had important matters to attend to, as her daughter had instructed her to attend to. After helping Xu Baobao to her feet, she hurriedly left.
Xu Baobao went in, threw herself into Xu Qing's arms, and said in a muffled voice, "Mom, you're so good."
"I will try my best to dig for wild vegetables, I will do a lot of work, I don't want to go back to Shijia."
Xu Qing stroked Xu Baobao's head and said softly, "You and your sister are both my precious treasures. I can't bear to let you leave. Don't worry."
Hearing her mother's promise, Xu Baobao was overjoyed.
She stood up from Xu Qing's arms, turned to look at Xu Beibei, skillfully unwrapped the swaddle, and checked if her little sister's diaper was wet.
"Mother, I will take good care of you and my sister."
"When I'm older, I'll go hunting in the mountains with my uncle, and I can earn money to support you."
