Chapter 22 Xu Beibei is missing
Everything was prepared last night, and Wen and Xu Qing slept in a little longer today.
Xu Qing first went into the kitchen, took the meat patties and steamed buns out of the shopping cart and put them into a wooden bucket that had been prepared in advance. She also mixed a large bucket of soy milk.
Because there was only one steamer, a lot of wood was used to steam the buns, so Xu Jian stayed home to chop firewood today.
Xu Qing couldn't take Xu Beibei with her when she went to chop firewood. Although Xu Baobao repeatedly said that she could take care of her younger sister at home, Xu Qing was still worried. Breastfeeding was a big problem.
In the end, they went to town together. When they arrived, they saw two people, one big and one small, standing in front of a stall.
Xu Qing recognized the woman as the one who had mentioned bringing her daughter out for a meal yesterday and greeted her warmly.
"Sister-in-law, when did you arrive? We've kept you waiting. We still need to rent some chairs, but we'll be right there."
The woman replied with a smile, "Just call me Sister Chen. I just arrived too. It was after my son ate your roujiamo yesterday."
He went back and bragged about it to his sister, which kept his daughter awake all night. That's why she came to wait for him first thing this morning.
Xu Qing: "Then I'll make one for my daughter first, and she can have a cup of soy milk later."
Xu Gong quickly unfolded the folding table, set up the boiler, and then went to rent tables and chairs.
The stove had just been lit, so the temperature wasn't rising quickly enough, and the steamed buns weren't frying very fast. The little girl kept staring at them eagerly.
After the tables and chairs were moved in, more and more people came, most of them bringing their children to eat.
Because there was one less person today, Xu Qing had to fry steamed buns and meat pies by himself and assemble them, Xu Gong collected money, and Wen Shi ladled soy milk and cleaned up the leftover bowls on the table, so they were quite busy.
Xu Baobao was still watching Xu Beibei from behind the stall. She really wanted to go to the toilet, but seeing the busy adults, she decided to hold it in a little longer.
Hearing the sound of scooping soy milk, Xu Baobao felt as if she was about to wet her pants, and finally she couldn't help but tug at Xu Qing's clothes.
Xu Qing turned around and saw Xu Baobao blushing and whispering, "Mom, I need to go to the toilet."
This stumped Xu Qing. She didn't know where there was a toilet in town. Men would just find a secluded spot to relieve themselves, but girls couldn't do that.
She apologized to the people in line, saying, "Excuse me, could you please wait a moment?"
After receiving the money, Xu Gong took over Xu Qing's job and started frying steamed buns and meat patties.
Xu Qing walked over to Wen Shi, who was tidying up the table, and asked, "Mother, do you know where there's a latrine nearby? Baby needs to go to the toilet; the child probably can't hold it in any longer."
Ms. Wen had only been to town a few times, and she had never used the toilet there, so she didn't know about it.
So they had to ask Xu Gong again. Xu Gong knew of a restaurant with an outhouse, but it would cost one coin.
Xu Qing immediately told Xu Gong to take Xu Baobao to the toilet.
After Xu Gong left, the stall, now one person less, became even busier, unaware that Xu Beibei behind them had been silent for a long time.
After Xu Baobao finished using the restroom, Xu Gong led her back quickly. The stall was busy at that time, and they needed to hurry back to help.
Back at his stall, Xu Gong immediately got to work when Xu Baobao let out a scream: "Ah! Mom! Little sister is gone!"
Everyone immediately turned around to look behind them, and the place where the bamboo basket had been was now empty.
Xu Qing felt her mind go blank, unable to understand the meaning behind Xu Baobao's words.
Beibei is missing. Where could Beibei have gone? She's almost a month old. Wasn't she sleeping in a bamboo basket? How could she have disappeared?
Wen was the first to react, exclaiming in alarm, "Oh no! Could it have been taken away by the kidnappers? We have to go find them quickly!"
Xu Gong looked at his stunned little sister and quickly instructed, "Mother, you and little sister search around first. Baby, you stay here at the stall and don't go anywhere. I'll go report to the authorities."
Xu Baobao's eyes were filled with tears, but she dared not let them fall. It was all her fault; if she hadn't gone to the toilet, her little sister wouldn't have been stolen.
Ms. Wen apologized to the people still in line, saying, "My child is lost. I'm so sorry, everyone. I won't be selling today."
The people in line erupted in an uproar.
"How outrageous! So many people dare to steal a child in public."
"Did you see when the child was taken away?"
"I didn't notice."
"That makes sense. With so many of us, how come no one noticed someone was stealing a child?"
She pulled Xu Qing along, determined to find them. Along the street, Wen gestured and asked everyone she encountered:
"Have you ever seen anyone carrying such a big bamboo basket? Inside is a baby girl who is not even a month old."
No one saw it, and some even thought they were crazy, covering their noses and walking away.
Xu Qing finally came to her senses. The child was really lost. Her heart ached so much that she couldn't stand and squatted down.
“Daughter, daughter, don’t worry, we will definitely find Beibei. Your second brother has already reported it to the authorities.”
Looking at Xu Qing, whose face was so pale it looked like he wasn't alive, Wen felt extremely distressed. What a tragedy! Did God really hate to see them have an easy life?
Xu Qing clutched her chest and slowly stood up. She had calmed down by now; they were definitely not going to find them if they were just wandering around like headless flies.
She took out a handful of copper coins and walked towards a little beggar.
"Have you ever seen someone carrying a large bamboo basket covered with a red floral cloth? If not, I know you have many friends and people all over town."
"If you help me find the person carrying the bamboo basket, I'll give each of you 20 coins as a deposit."
Xu Qing put the copper coins into the little beggar's bowl, his expression cold.
The little beggar's eyes lit up when he saw so many copper coins, and he stuffed the broken bowl into his arms and hugged it tightly.
"Don't worry, Madam. You've come to the right person to entrust this matter to me. I'll take care of it for you right away."
The little beggar got up from the ground and told Xu Qing to follow him. Wen slapped her forehead and followed as well. Xu Qing turned back and said:
"Mom, go back and watch over the baby. That girl must be terrified. I'm worried about leaving her there alone."
The little beggar walked very fast. When he saw that Xu Qing hadn't followed, he stopped and waited for her. After Xu Qing caught up, the two quickly disappeared into a small alley.
Xu Gong ran to the yamen, but was stopped at the door by the yamen runners.
"Many children have gone missing these past few days. Let's register them first, and we'll send them back once we find them."
The bailiff casually tossed him a piece of paper and a pen.
Xu Gong said urgently, "My niece just went missing, she must still be in town. You need to send people to look for her now, or she might have already left and we won't be able to find her again!"
The constable scoffed, "Who do you think you are? You think you can just come and find us whenever you want? We have important business to attend to. Alright, alright, register us and get out of here. Otherwise, you'll get a taste of the rod."
Xu Gong roared and rushed inside: "I want to see the magistrate! You yamen runners who don't care about the lives of the people! I want to see the magistrate!"
Two constables pulled Xu Gong down, and one of them kicked Xu Gong in the chest, causing him to fall to the ground.
"Does anyone think they can just see the magistrate? The magistrate is busy. I'll say it one last time, get out of here."
Xu Gong glared resentfully at the smug yamen runner and walked away.
Since the government won't help, we can only rely on ourselves. We need to hurry and go find Beibei with my younger sister and the others.
After Xu Gong left, the two yamen runners spat and said, "The magistrate has been in a very bad mood these past few days, we dare not bother him."
"Yeah, if we let this kid in, we might all get implicated. Why put up with that injustice? Brother Zhou, let's go for a drink after we get off work..."
