Chapter 15: Fell into a cesspool
The next afternoon.
The whole family was ready to go up the mountain. In the morning, Xu Jian made an extra-large bamboo basket.
They burned it to remove any small splinters, lined the inside with thick clothing, and then placed Xu Beibei inside.
Xu Qing admired Xu Jian's ingenious idea; wasn't this just a modern version of a portable cradle?
Xu Jian scratched his head sheepishly: "Last time I took Beibei to the mountain, there were so many mosquitoes. I kept chasing them away, and Beibei got two big bites."
When I got back, I thought about making one of these so I could put her inside, cover her with a gauze pad to keep out mosquitoes, and keep her cool while she lay there.
The group carried Xu Beibei and headed up the mountain. This was the first time Xu Qing had gone out since she came to this world.
Along the way, she looked around curiously, finding everything new and interesting.
On the way, they encountered some village women chatting idly. Seeing that the whole family had come out, they greeted them with smiles:
"Are you carrying such a big basket on your way to visit your daughter's ex-husband's family in Shijia Village?"
Xu Jian and Xu Gong exchanged glances.
Ms. Wen explained, "No, we went up the mountain to find some food. This basket contains my little granddaughter. Why would Sister Liu mention the Shi family?"
The woman whom Wen called Sister Liu laughed heartily: "Didn't my daughter marry into Shijia Village? This morning she came back to her parents' home and told me something very important!"
Wen asked in confusion, "What important matter? The Shi family's?"
Aunt Liu loved to gossip: "If you ask me, it's probably because the Shi family did too many bad things and got their comeuppance."
Last night, when the old woman Ding from the Shi family got up to use the restroom, the wooden plank of the outhouse broke, and she fell into the latrine.
Everyone was sound asleep that night. The old woman fell down and was completely disoriented. She cried out twice, but no one in the house heard her.
The next morning, her eldest daughter-in-law got up to cook and went to the outhouse. She didn't notice that there were no planks inside and fell in, alarming the family.
My daughter told me that when they pulled the two women up, that old woman Ding was practically marinated in soot; she was barely breathing.
Aunt Liu's tone was regretful, pitiful, and sympathetic, but her eyes held the excitement of gossiping.
Wen and Xu Qing felt nauseous and almost threw up their lunch.
Xu Jian and Xu Gong also looked disgusted, but the corners of their mouths couldn't be suppressed from turning up.
Xu Gong pinched his thigh hard, then gave his older brother a slap before finally calming down.
Now they should behave themselves for a while and stop bothering the younger sister.
After bidding farewell to Aunt Liu, Wen felt a sense of satisfaction and secretly cursed that she deserved it.
Looking at his overly cheerful older brothers beside him, and recalling their actions yesterday, Xu Qing looked at them with some suspicion.
Sensing his younger sister's probing gaze, Xu Gong and Xu Jian tried their best to appear nonchalant.
Xu Qing found it amusing; it must have been these two who did it to get revenge for her. Since her brothers didn't want to talk about it, she would just pretend she didn't know.
Xu Qing withdrew his gaze, and the two brothers breathed a sigh of relief.
The path up the mountain was relatively easy to walk on; the main activity was gathering wild vegetables and chopping firewood, and many people had already made their own paths.
Near the foot of the mountain, apart from a few scattered small trees, everything had been stripped bare as the group walked deeper into the mountain.
After walking for a while, Xu Gong said, "Let's go see if my trap has caught any prey."
Everyone nodded and followed. When they arrived at the place, they immediately saw the little wild rabbit hanging in the tree. Xu Gong happily put the rabbit down.
"My little sister is truly a lucky star in our family. Before, I would go ten days or half a month without catching anything with my lasso."
Since my younger sister came back, she's worn a condom twice already.
Xu Jian nodded in agreement, and Madam Wen also had an expression that said, "Of course, it doesn't matter whose daughter it is."
Even Xu Baobao looked at her with a face full of admiration.
This made it hard for Xu Qing not to blush.
"Let's go check out another place. With our little sister here, we're sure to have a great harvest this time too."
Xu Gong led the group toward another trap with great interest.
As soon as she got closer, the mechanical voice in Xu Qing's head made her expression change instantly.
[Ding! One wild free-range piglet detected, 200 coins per catty. Sell?]
She finally understood why there was something strange about this area: when they first started climbing the mountain, there were cicadas chirping all the way, but this area was completely quiet, without a sound.
The shop then alerted her that there were wild boars nearby, which must have been caught in her second brother's trap, and the mother pig was lingering nearby trying to rescue it.
"Second Brother, wait! Don't come any closer."
Xu Qing dared not make too much noise, for fear of startling the wild boar lurking in the shadows.
This is no joke; a wild boar weighs several hundred pounds. Wild boars, especially those protecting their young, are particularly ferocious.
If they were to charge at them, how could they, a group of unarmed people, possibly withstand it?
Xu Gong was caught up in the excitement and didn't hear Xu Qing's reminder. He ran straight forward and exclaimed, "I actually caught a wild boar!"
Not only did Xu Gong not hear it, but neither did Wen Shi and Xu Jian. Xu Baobao, who was close by, did hear it, but she didn't hear it clearly either.
He tilted his head back and asked, "Mother, what did you say?"
Wen and Xu Jian, who was carrying Xu Beibei, were also happy to hear that they had caught a wild boar and went to check on it.
Wen: "Is it still alive? If it is, we can take it back, raise it, and sell it for money or even eat it as meat—we'll make a fortune!"
Xu Gong had already taken the baby wild boar down. The baby wild boar wasn't afraid of people and kept grunting in Xu Gong's arms.
"Still alive, Mom, Big Brother, look, he's quite well-behaved."
Xu Jian carried Xu Beibei out to show her the little wild boar, and Xu Beibei curiously tried to reach out and grab it.
Xu Baobao also wanted to run up to see the little wild boar, but Xu Qing pulled her back and nervously looked around.
Xu Jian pulled Xu Beibei closer, and her little hands touched the wild boar with great curiosity, gripping it even more tightly. Suddenly, the little wild boar let out a cry of pain.
Xu Jian said with a smile, "Beibei is small but has a lot of strength. She pulled the little wild boar's ears so hard they hurt."
This caused Xu Gong and Wen Shi to burst into laughter.
Xu Qing was even more frightened. If the sow rushed out now, it would be too late to call for help. She told Xu Baobao to go down the mountain and wait for them.
Xu Baobao didn't understand why, but she listened to her mother and obediently walked down the mountain.
Xu Qing quickly walked towards Xu Gong. As she moved, the grass began to shake violently, and a huge creature was moving through it.
The grass rustled softly, and there was the dull thud of hooves on the ground.
Xu Qing didn't dare to delay and shouted, "Run! The little wild boar's mother is coming!"
Xu Gong and the others were also drawn to the sounds coming from the bushes. Upon hearing Xu Qing's exclamation, their expressions changed.
Xu Jianli immediately put Xu Beibei into a bamboo basket, picked her up and climbed up the tree. After hanging Xu Beibei high on a branch, he jumped down.
Turning to Wen Shi and Xu Qing, he quickly said, "Mother, you and your sister should climb up the tree and hide."
Then they picked up the machete and, together with Xu Gong, ran to the other side carrying the baby wild boar. The mother boar's target was definitely them, who had caught the baby wild boar. As long as they lured the wild boar away, their mother and younger sister would be safe.
Ms. Wen quickly squatted down and let Xu Qing climb the tree by stepping on her shoulders.
There was a "crash" sound.
The wild boar parted the grass, letting out a low growl.
Ms. Wen was so frightened that she fell to the ground.
Just then, a mechanical notification sounded in Xu Qing's mind.
[Ding! One wild, free-range, large, fat pig detected. Price: 200 coins per pound. Sell?]
Xu Qing usually sells dead chickens and rabbits; he doesn't know if he can sell a live wild boar.
The situation was critical, and Xu Qing didn't have time to think too much. She immediately recited the mantra in her mind.
