Since Jieyuhua's feet weren't bound with Lingxiao's blood, there were naturally more corpse beetles heading their way.

The battle lasted a long time, until Aning had to adjust his strategy. Then, someone discovered a pile of stones at the bottom of the desert, and the corpse beetles stopped around the pile.

There seemed to be something smeared on these stones; you could smell a rather unpleasant odor if you got close, but thankfully it was safe.

"Why are you two arguing? Mr. Hua, Lingzi has been protecting you like the apple of his eye, how come you're arguing all of a sudden?" the fat man interjected.

Jieyuhua glanced at him, her tone tinged with accusation: "You think I'm wrong?"

The fat man was momentarily speechless at Xie Yuhua's question, which was clearly tinged with anger. He looked at Xie Yuhua's face, which, though covered in dust, still couldn't hide his handsome features, but was now filled with confusion and determination. He then secretly glanced at Ling Xiao, who was leaning against a rock not far away, exuding an aura of coldness that kept strangers at bay. He felt utterly overwhelmed.

"Oh, my dear Hua!" The fat man said with a bitter face, his voice lowered even further, full of embarrassment. "I don't even know what happened, so how dare I judge who's right and who's wrong between you? It's just that this is the first time Lingzi has ever been so angry. Even if he's wrong, you know what I mean? When these two are together, it's inevitable that there will be some bumps along the way. You should sometimes take care of Lingxiao."

———Stone Edge

Ling Xiao looked up at the sky and said to the young man beside him, "Young man, do you know what it feels like when the story ends?"

His words came out of nowhere, which startled the young man, who turned to look at him.

But then he continued, "The reason I came here is inextricably linked to that phone call with Wu Xie. When I received the call, I realized that the story was about to end."

I've had a lot of happiness in my life, and the gods have abandoned me. But recently I've come to understand what happiness is. It seems the storyteller had a change of heart and gave me a new body, a lover, and all of you.

Don't call me dramatic, this really torments me. I know clearly that I'm sick. Whenever I get a little benefit and should feel happy, I'm in pain. I'm afraid because I know it doesn't belong to me.

But I can't bear to leave this place, I can't bear to leave Xiaohua. I brainwashed myself into thinking that I've entered a different world and this is what I deserve. It was Wuxie's phone call that woke me up. My childhood was unhappy, and this time the author gave me a mother.

I realized the story might be nearing its end, and I didn't want to dwell on it, but I wanted to see what she was like. I wanted to see what kind of person the author would choose to be my mother, so I came here.

I met her; she looked like most mothers, but I sent her back because I didn't want to end this game. The story doesn't always have a happy ending, don't you think, buddy?

The young man stood beside him, silent as a stone. Unusually, he didn't look away. After listening to Ling Xiao's thoughts, a faint, inscrutable ripple seemed to flicker across his perpetually expressionless face.

“These were always yours,” he said, then glanced at the horizon and added, “No one ever forced them upon you.”

The ending is not necessarily happy.

But the ending will definitely be what you hope for.
