After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the proprietress gestured for Sang Yi to bring out the items.
"This was left with me by Boss Aning. I promised to return it to you when you came. Now that I'm taking it out, it's like returning it to its rightful owner."
Wu Xie glanced at it and saw that it was a mahogany box. Inside was a small blue-and-white porcelain plate with a broken left side. Because it was badly damaged, it didn't seem to have any value. Why would A Ning keep it?
The fat man, though outwardly examining the broken plate, kept glancing at the silent exchange between Sang Yi and the proprietress. The throat-slitting gesture, though subtle, sounded like a loud bang to a seasoned veteran like him. His heart skipped a beat, but he didn't show it. Instead, he casually leaned closer to Sang Yi, nudged him with his elbow, and teased in a low voice with a hint of Beijing dialect, "Hey, brother, what kind of riddles are you playing with Mom? What's the story behind this plate? Look at you two exchanging knowing glances."
Sang Yi was taken aback by his question, a hint of panic flashing across her dark face as she instinctively glanced at the landlady. The landlady's cheerful smile seemed to freeze for a moment as she was about to speak to smooth things over when the tent flap was lifted.
The two Tibetan women who entered instantly drew everyone's attention. The elderly woman at the head of the group was shockingly thin, as if a gust of wind could knock her over. Time had etched deep lines into her face, and her head of silver hair resembled the perpetual snow on the plateau. Her eyes were sunken deep in wrinkles, so cloudy that the whites were almost invisible, but when her gaze swept over the people in the tent, an invisible pressure, accumulated over countless years, quietly spread out. The middle-aged woman beside her supported her, her expression respectful and solemn.
Upon seeing the old lady, the proprietress and Sang Yi immediately composed themselves, even showing a hint of reverence. They clasped their hands together, bowed deeply, and greeted her with utmost sincerity: "Grandma."
The old lady ignored them, her gaze falling directly on the mahogany box that the crowd was looking at—or more accurately, on the broken blue-and-white porcelain plate.
The tent fell silent instantly; even breathing could be heard clearly. Aning quickly held the object up to the old woman's face and asked, "Grandma, look, is this what you saw back then?"
Supported by a middle-aged woman, the old woman reached out her withered, twig-like hand, touched the plate, and nodded. She then said something in Tibetan, and the back-and-forth between the group made it difficult for the translator to understand.
"Oh my, it's rare to see that woman so respectful. Naive, do you know who this old lady is?" the fat man asked quietly.
“Ask him, why not ask your blind brother? Never mind, the blind man is kind-hearted and helped you out. This person is called Dingzhu Zhuoma, Chen Yunjin’s guide back then,” Black Bear answered quickly.
"No!" Wu Xie was instantly drenched in cold sweat. Hei Xiazi's words, "Dingzhu Zhuoma, Chen Yunjin's guide back then," pierced through Wu Xie's barely maintained composure like an ice pick. He felt a chill run from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, and the cold sweat on his back instantly soaked through his inner shirt, sticky and icy.
His voice trembled without him even realizing it. He turned sharply to look at Black Bear and Fatty, his eyes filled with disbelief and horror. "Laitamutuo...it was clearly our plan! Aning...how did Aning know about Chen Yunjin?! How could she have even found Dingzhu Zhuoma?! And this plate..." He didn't finish his sentence, but his meaning was crystal clear.
The fat man's playful smile vanished completely, his small eyes widening in shock. He looked at A-Ning, then at the broken plate that Dingzhu Zhuoma had confirmed, and finally at Black Bear. His voice was extremely low and filled with unprecedented gravity: "Holy crap! Black Bear, what the hell is going on? Tianzhen was right! This woman, A-Ning... she's acting strangely! Or is there a traitor among us?"
