The night was silent. Ling Xiao lay in the haystack outside counting the stars. He hadn't told Qi Mo that his father had already set off. Since finding Qi Mo, Qi's father seemed to have aged more than ten years. He didn't blame Ling Xiao at all, which made Ling Xiao suspect that Qi Mo's transformation was all Qi's father's doing.

After all, the way that book came about was really strange.

What's even stranger is that Qi Mo didn't ask about his father's whereabouts. It seems like a rare tacit understanding between the father and son, which makes Ling Xiao feel that the father and son have actually set a trap for him.

Ling Xiao was exhausted from pondering the intricacies of the situation that night. He lay down on the haystack and unexpectedly fell asleep. When he woke up the next morning, he saw Qi Mo practicing horse stance.

His ability to accept things is surprisingly good. He was so desperate yesterday, but he figured it out in just one night.

"When did you get up?" Ling Xiao climbed up from the haystack, turned his neck, and felt that the morning dew was heavy, making his clothes wet and uncomfortable.

"I just got up not long ago and haven't had breakfast yet." Xiao Qimo's lips drooped, as if he still felt wronged, but because his sunglasses hid his tears, it was impossible to tell.

Ling Xiao ruffled his hair: "What, you think following me will mean you'll go hungry? Didn't you say you were coming with me yesterday? Have you prepared the money?"

Qi Mo hugged Ling Xiao tightly and burst into tears, crying and shouting, "I'm ready, you can have as much as you want, just don't leave me."

"Okay, but I need lots and lots of money. Shall we go have breakfast now?" Ling Xiao comforted him for a while before taking him to breakfast and continuing on their way.

Ling Xiao taught him to use his other senses to experience life, and Qi Mo began to become diligent and eager to learn. After arriving in Northeast China, Ling Xiao realized that he had been completely deceived by Qi's father.

Qi's father never showed up again.

Ling Xiao gritted his teeth and asked Qi Mo where the watch was, but Qi Mo said that the watch was with his father and had not been given to him at all.

"Your dad really isn't afraid I'll abandon you?" Ling Xiao muttered, resignedly ordering someone to clean up.

At night, the north wind howled in through the window, and Qi Mo huddled under the covers.

"You don't need to wear sunglasses to sleep. Why didn't you wake me up when you got cold?" Ling Xiao sighed, tucked the blanket around him, and closed the window.

"It's summer, why is it so cold here?" Qi Mo leaned closer to him.

"It's all because of your father, who found us this lousy place. We might not even have breakfast tomorrow. I promised you'd never have to worry about food or drink for three lifetimes. Look at this place, it's drafty and gloomy. Otherwise, how would I know you're cold? Seriously, you can't afford to support me like this!" Ling Xiao blurted out.

"We can afford to raise him! We can afford to raise him!" Seeing that Xiao Qimo was about to cry again, Ling Xiao stopped him and gave him a cane, placing it by the bedside.

"It'll be more convenient to put this cane by your bedside, but I worked hard to make it, so be careful." Ling Xiao clapped his hands and left after saying that.

The next morning, Ling Xiao was surprised to find Qi Mo covered in bruises and scrapes, with broken mushrooms scattered on the ground—but they didn't look like good mushrooms at all…

"What's going on? Are we picking mushrooms like little girls this early in the morning?" Ling Xiao said, picking at a few mushrooms on the ground.

"What little girl? This is breakfast." Qi Mo blushed and turned her head away.

"You mean... these few poisonous mushrooms are... breakfast for all of us? No one'll even come for the feast!"

"Poisonous mushrooms? I'm so useless..." Qi Mo seemed about to cry again, but Ling Xiao poked his forehead with his index finger and said, "A real man doesn't shed tears easily. It's just about earning money and food, don't say such discouraging things like you're useless. Do you hear me!"

Qi Mo nodded, and so, to make a living, Ling Xiao began taking Qi Mo to the market to do some small business. They set up a small stall, selling herbs and wild fruits gathered from the mountains. Qi Mo was young and initially didn't quite understand the effects of these herbs, so Ling Xiao patiently taught him. Qi Mo learned carefully about the appearance, taste, and uses of each herb. The market was bustling and noisy, with people coming and going, and Qi Mo would call out his wares in his childish voice, but sometimes he wouldn't sell much all day.

In his spare time, Ling Xiao would still teach him some martial arts and tomb raiding techniques. Ling Xiao had said that you should get up wherever you fall. So Qi Mo listened attentively as Ling Xiao explained how to assess feng shui, locate tombs, and identify traps and dangers within tombs.

As the days passed, things began to get tough. The staple foods here were mostly corn and sorghum, and vegetables were especially scarce in winter, mostly consisting of pickled vegetables. Qi Mo initially couldn't get used to the food, but Ling Xiao's approach was to raise him frugally, so when he was hungry, he could only swallow his food in large mouthfuls. Sometimes they would go fishing in the river, breaking through the thick ice, casting their lines, and waiting a long time for a catch. After catching the fish, they would light a fire by the river and simply roast them; the aroma of the roasted fish could dispel some of the winter chill.

During his time in Northeast China, Qi Mo also met some local children. They played together in the snow, had snowball fights, and built snowmen, their laughter echoing across the open snowfield.

Qi Mo told them stories about the grasslands. With his small sunglasses on, no one could tell he was blind. His friends listened with great interest and also told him some Northeast legends, such as stories of fox spirits and weasels. Qi Mo was curious and scared, and asked Ling Xiao about them when he got home.
