The next day, the snow fell even heavier, and before going out, the woman put a hat on Ling Xiao's head.

"This hat belongs to my son Dazhu. I washed it, so please don't mind it. It's very cold and windy outside. You're not very strong, so this will keep you warm."

Shunzi took the lead in renting 14 horses. Several people changed into special riding clothes and shoes, put their equipment on the horses, and set off in a grand procession, each riding a horse.

I don't know when I entered the mountains. When I came to my senses, I found myself in a forest. Looking down, the scenery was absolutely stunning. Every section offered a different view. This was the first time I had ever seen such a tolerant mountain range.

Ling Xiao felt as if it were a living being, truly alive, with the same forgiving nature as a mother in a picture book, making him unable to stop crying. Every step upward felt like it was embracing him, forgiving all his mistakes.

In stark contrast to him was Wu Xie, whose eyes remained closed. He gripped the reins tightly, afraid to look down for fear of falling. Occasionally, he would open his eyes to peek at the breathtaking scenery, then steal a few glances before closing them again.

The group entered the forest from Yingshan Village and walked along the man-made mountain path for nearly four hours before Shunzi led them to the mouth of a lake.

"This is 'Ashigai' in Korean, which means 'Girl Lake'," Shunzi explained to the group.

The lake water was as clear as a mirror, reflecting the entire Changbai Mountain.

Cheng Yu handed his camera to Shunzi, and in order to appear like tourists, he asked Shunzi to take a group photo of them.

"Why are you crying?" Xie Yuhua noticed Ling Xiao's tear stains. His little face was flushed and his eyes were red. He wiped away Ling Xiao's tears and kissed his cool little face before asking.

"The eye of the storm." Ling Xiao's voice wasn't loud, and it sounded rather unsure.

Xie Yuhua paused in wiping his hands. He didn't know when the child had developed such a problem, but the wind and snow on Changbai Mountain were indeed getting heavier. He asked Hei Xiazi for a pair of sunglasses and put them on the child.

After taking a group photo, the group continued walking forward. The higher they went, the more difficult the path became. When Wu Xie looked again, he realized that they were already walking on a slope of about 60 degrees. The straight trees on both sides and the sloping ground told Wu Xie how dangerous this place was, and that a slight misstep could cause them to tumble down the mountain.

“If we go a little further up, there’s another deserted village, which used to be a border outpost. But there’s no one there now. We can camp there for the night and then continue the next day,” Shunzi suggested.

This place truly deserves the name of a deserted village, but fortunately, these dilapidated houses are not drafty. I wonder if they were deliberately renovated because tourists come here often.

"We should be eating something hot right now, there's nothing here after this snowfall," the fat man cursed, kicking the stones around the wooden house.

“There are probably wild vegetables on the hillside at this time of year, but they’re covered in snow right now. I see there’s a pot in that wooden house. We can fill it with snow to melt water, then go dig up some wild vegetables. If we’re lucky, we might be able to make a pot of wild vegetable soup.” Ling Xiao took a basin off his horse and scooped snow into it.

Wu Xie admired his hands-on ability; he did whatever came to mind without any hesitation.

"Isn't there a hot spring? Why did you boil it yourself?" The fat man looked at Ling Xiao's hands, which were frozen and formed a stark contrast with the snow, and felt a pang of heartache.

"I read it in a book, saying that snow is a gift from nature. It's clean because the snow melts and the water is sterilized by high temperature, so it won't make you sick. I've never drunk it, but I think I probably won't be able to drink such a natural drink in the future."

"Besides, the hot spring water has so many minerals that it's fine to boil an egg or heat something up, but you're not afraid of getting kidney stones if you drink it directly!" Ling Xiao laughed.
