In the end, Chen was scolded by the old lady for most of the day. Seeing that things hadn't escalated, Granny Zhou called the village head and left. With her money back, Li Xiaonuan was overjoyed.

That evening, Li Xiaoyang drove the borrowed oxcart to take the old lady and the others away. When he returned, Xiaoyang said that his fourth uncle and his wife had a big fight, saying that his fourth uncle was having an affair. Now, his fourth aunt had taken the child and gone back to her parents' home.

Upon hearing what Chen had done, Fifth Uncle slapped her twice. Chen, sobbing, took her son and went back to her parents' home. However, Li Xiaonuan thought Chen wouldn't stay long and would probably be sent back in the next day or two.

"Wow, we really caught a rabbit! Bro, when I get back this afternoon, I'll go set a trap with you."

Early in the morning, as soon as Li Xiaonuan opened the door, she heard Xiaogang's voice. After seeing what Xiaoyang was holding, Li Xiaonuan couldn't help but sigh.

"Wow, what big rabbits! There are three of them! Did you catch them in our field?"

Xiao Yang threw the rabbit to the ground, clapped his hands, and said, "That's right. If we hadn't discovered it in time, we might not have even been able to harvest any grass seeds in the fall. You didn't see how badly the bean sprouts were damaged; it's infuriating."

Li Xiaonuan squatted down, tugged at the rabbit's ears, and said, "It's okay, if you set the trap a few more times, they won't dare to come. But this rabbit is really fat, let's burn one today."

Xiao Gang squatted down, poked at the rabbits a couple of times, picked up two, and said ingratiatingly, "Keep the fattest one at home to eat. Let me take the other two to the clinic to offer to my master and Old Man Jing."

Xiao Yang chuckled, grabbed Xiao Gang by the neck, flicked him twice on the forehead, and said, "Look at you, now that you have a master, you've forgotten your parents."

Xiao Gang broke free from Xiao Yang's clutches, rubbing his forehead and complaining, "Who said I forgot my parents? We still have the biggest and fattest one left. Besides, if I didn't try to please those two, why would they pass on their family recipe to me?"

After breakfast, Xiao Gang excitedly carried two rabbits and ran to the clinic. Xiao Yang and Su Shi went to the field to tidy up the damaged bean seedlings. Seeing that it was still early, Li Xiaonuan went along with them.

As they passed in front of the Zhao family's house, Zhao Wangchuan returned with two people. As they passed each other, Zhao Wangchuan called out with a smile, "Xiao Nuan."

Li Xiaonuan stopped and returned the smile: "Brother Zhao."

Zhao Wangchuan also greeted Su Shi and Xiao Yang: "Auntie, Xiao Yang, are you going to the fields?"

Su nodded in agreement; she was still unaware that Zhao Wangchuan had returned, and her mind was momentarily blank. Xiao Yang put down the hoe and pickaxe on his shoulder and called out with a bright smile, "Brother Wangchuan, when did you get back?"

Zhao Wangchuan smiled and replied, "I just got back yesterday. You guys go ahead and do your work, I have things to do. I'll visit your family when I have time." He looked at Li Xiaonuan, wanting to ask her what had happened. However, now wasn't the time to show concern; he needed to figure out how to please his mother, that was the most important thing right now.

After a brief greeting, the two groups went their separate ways. Back in front of the Zhao family's gate, Zhao Wangchuan instructed a slightly shorter man, "Go and investigate the past seven years of events involving that family."

The man obeyed and followed them into the Zhao family's house. A moment later, an elderly man with a white beard appeared near the Zhao family's house.

After nearly a month of training, Li Xiaonuan can now accurately recognize people. However, she still struggles with her sense of direction and finding her way around.

In the field, a ring of bean seedlings near the grass had been gnawed into pieces. There were obvious rabbit footprints and burrowing marks in the ground. Mrs. Su felt both heartbroken and helpless. These bean seeds had all been bought; if there was no harvest, wouldn't that be a complete waste of money?

Xiao Yang wielded his sickle, cutting away the grass near the edge of the field to create a wide isolation circle. Su Shi used her hoe to clear the weeds between the bean seedlings. Li Xiaonuan, who had difficulty moving around, asked Xiao Yang to bring her a stone stool so she could sit there and prop up the surviving bean seedlings.

In the scorching heat of June in the south, the three of them were already drenched in sweat before the sun even touched the ground. This was especially true for Su Shi and Xiao Yang. After stopping to drink some water, Xiao Yang said to Li Xiaonuan, "Sister, the sun is about to set, you should go back now."

Su chimed in, "Hey, hurry back. I'll take care of those little seedlings later. Your father should be up by now, go back and keep him company."

Without looking up, Li Xiaonuan replied, "Yes, there's only this small piece left. I'll go back as soon as I'm done." Li Xiaonuan felt very appreciated by their concern.

No matter how loving Li Xiaonuan's family is, there's always someone who's trying to please their only relative.

"Mother, look at me, I've grown so much. Look closely, am I different from before? Mother, please just look at me. I know I was wrong, and I promise this will never happen again."

Zhao Wangchuan knelt before the bed, trying everything he could to get his mother to look at him. Ever since he returned home, his mother hadn't even glanced at him after fainting and waking up. This left him feeling utterly defeated.

“Mother, I’m sorry for my willfulness. Now that I’m back, Mother, get up and give me a good beating. Mother, I’ve been away for years, thinking of you every day, wanting to see you as soon as possible. I want you to hug me, then give me a good beating, and then ask me how I’m doing.”

Wei Lu lay with her back to Zhao Wangchuan, her hands clenched into fists. Every time she heard Zhao Wangchuan call "Mother," she couldn't help but turn around and hug him. But she knew she couldn't; she had to teach him a lesson.

“Mother, when I was first adrift at sea with Master, I thought I was going to die. At that time, I felt so sorry for you. In order to come back and continue to be filial to you, I endured a lot of suffering that ordinary people could not bear.”

“Mother, you don’t know, the sea is just a vast expanse of seawater. When a big wave comes, the boat capsizes. My master and I clung to the plank and floated for a long time, almost being eaten by ferocious fish with sharp teeth several times. But when I thought of you, I pulled through.”

As Zhao Wangchuan recounted his story, Wei Lu felt an unbearable heartache. Tears welled in her tightly closed eyes. Yet, she still refused to forgive Zhao Wangchuan. For the past seven years, no one knew the torment and pain she had endured.

"Mother, for the past seven years, my master and I have traveled to many countries. The people there look completely different from us. A dozen or so of us were almost killed there, and then we were captured and enslaved. And then..."

Zhao Wangchuan recounted his experiences over the past seven years, one by one. At first, he tried to pick out the interesting and less dangerous things to talk about. But when he saw Wei Lu's shoulders visibly trembling, he started to steer the conversation toward the dangerous parts.

Sure enough, Wei Lu spoke up when he heard that he had been tied to the cross and almost burned to death.

"Since it was always so dangerous, why didn't you turn back? Didn't you think of your mother then?"
