Transmigrated Leftover Woman in Rural Style
Chapter 15 Repairing a House
Wei Bian became somewhat irritated at the mention of his wife. He said dismissively, "Alright, no matter how much she looks like her, she's not your sister-in-law. You should be more careful and not let anyone fool you."
Wei Yu, however, was still absorbed in his new discovery and didn't listen to Wei Bian at all. He grabbed Wei Bian's hand and asked, "Brother, do you think this is the reason why Qi Ji was willing to help treat her father?"
Upon hearing the name "Qi Ji," Wei Bian's expression changed slightly. He tried his best to maintain his composure and said to Wei Yu, "Alright, stop thinking about those things. Since you have your own ideas, do a good job of handling things and don't fall into their trap. Go back and drink some milk to replenish your energy."
Wei Yu composed himself, muttering resentfully, "You never let me finish what I'm saying. Don't ask anyone to come to me next time. I'm all grown up now, why are you still controlling me like you were when I was a kid? And remember, go back and visit your sister-in-law more often."
After saying that, Wei Yu walked out with a displeased expression. Behind him, Wei Bian felt a headache coming on, and even forgot why he had asked Wei Yu to come. When he came to his senses, Wei Yu had already returned to his courtyard.
Knowing that Mrs. Su would definitely not be used to Mr. Li's absence, Li Xiaonuan took her bedding and moved into Mrs. Su's room that very night. Under the covers, Li Xiaonuan clung to Mrs. Su's arm, chatting idly. Somehow, the conversation turned to the house.
"Mom, let's fix the house. We've lived here for over ten years, and look how old the walls are. Also, if it rains heavily, our house will flood."
Mrs. Su was somewhat tempted; the house was indeed very dilapidated. But thinking of her husband's health, she hesitated: "Why don't we wait until your father recovers, and if we still have money, then we can repair it. We can just replace the thatch on the roof for now."
"Mother, don't worry about the money. You've forgotten, I got five hundred taels from buying the pastry recipe. Building a brick house won't cost much."
At this point, Madam Su remembered something else. She turned to Li Xiaonuan, took her hand, and asked, "Did you really see those pastry recipes in your dream? How could you dream about those things?"
One lie requires a thousand more to cover it up. Li Xiaonuan felt helpless and started another lie: "During the two days I was unconscious, it felt like I drifted to another place. Everything there was different from ours, and their way of life was very strange. Many of the foods they made were things I had never seen before. And the things they grew were better than ours."
Su asked again, "Didn't you meet anyone special?"
Li Xiaonuan considered making up some kind of deity or something, but then thought that was too far-fetched. So she replied, "No, I just floated around there, watching other people live their lives. They couldn't see me. I learned a lot from them."
The more she listened, the more nervous Su became. She gripped Li Xiaonuan's hand tightly, as if afraid she would fly away. After a long while, she asked in a trembling voice, "Then how did you get back?"
Li Xiaonuan comforted Su Shi and whispered, "It seems like I drifted in that world for over twenty years. Then, I heard someone calling me. I answered, and then I knew nothing more. When I woke up, I was already in my bed at home."
Hearing this, Su finally relaxed her tense body. She clasped her hands together in prayer under the covers: "Thank God, Amitabha, Bodhisattva, please protect me. Fortunately, fortunately I called you, otherwise, you wouldn't have come back."
At this point, Madam Su slapped Li Xiaonuan hard and scolded her, "You silly girl, you're out of your mind! Why didn't you say so sooner? No, I have to ask a shaman to come and collect your soul tomorrow."
Li Xiaonuan was instantly embarrassed; this was probably the best example of "lifting a stone only to drop it on one's own foot." She tried to suggest, "Why don't we go to Wutong Temple to offer incense and ask the master to chant some sutras for me? Then we can have them choose an auspicious day to repair the house."
After thinking about it, Su agreed, "Okay, let's go to Wutong Temple and get you a soul-locking talisman."
The late-night chat ended without incident, leaving Li Xiaonuan feeling lingering fear. However, she had successfully closed a major deal that day, which had been quite stressful, and she quickly drifted off to sleep. She slept soundly until dawn.
After dressing neatly and washing up quickly, Li Xiaonuan came out with a basin to splash water. Li Xiaogang, who was waiting in the yard, went over to her and asked, "Sister, are we really going to repair the house?"
Li Xiaonuan nodded and replied, "Yes, we're going to build a big brick house. Did Mom tell you that? Where's Mom?"
Li Xiaogang, unlike his usual simple-minded self, jumped around lively and said, "Great! We finally have a new house to live in. Mom and my brother went to pay off their debts and asked someone to help build the house."
Seeing Xiao Gang so active was a rare sight for Li Xiaonuan, and she chuckled. She splashed the water, washed the basin, refilled it, and brought it back inside. Not long after breakfast, the Su mother and son returned.
"Mom, did you get someone to fix the house?" As soon as he saw Su Shi, Xiao Gang went over and asked.
Madam Su tapped his forehead and said reproachfully, "You've arrived! You'll be able to tell your father the good news soon and make him happy too."
Xiao Yang watched the mother and son interact with a smile. When Li's father was mentioned, Li Xiaonuan asked, "Mom, should we discuss the house repairs with Dad again?"
Only then did Madam Su realize that she hadn't consulted the head of the household, so she quickly nodded and said, "We should discuss it with him. We'll go talk to him later and let him make the decision."
After a quick packing, the family headed back to the prefectural city. Since Father Li wasn't there, they hadn't borrowed an oxcart. As they passed under the large banyan tree in the village, several women chatting there gathered around and asked:
"Xiao Nuan, I heard you found some Ganoderma lucidum on the mountain. Where did you find it?"
"Auntie, how much silver did you get for those Ganoderma lucidum mushrooms? You've been using them for medical treatment and house repairs, you must have made quite a bit, right?"
Su replied evasively, "The Ganoderma lucidum isn't very good, and we didn't sell many. After treating the patient and repairing the house, the money was all gone."
One of the women, who looked rather mean, curled her lip and raised her eyes, saying, "Oh, you're afraid we'll find out. Don't worry, we're not asking you for money, we just want to ask about the market. When we find our own Ganoderma lucidum, we'll have a better idea of what to expect."
“Exactly, exactly,” said another woman with slanted eyes and red lipstick. “Give us a price, and if we manage to pick them, we won’t be left without a backup plan. Don’t you all agree?”
Su was in a dilemma, not wanting to offend anyone, nor willing to tell them the truth. Li Xiaonuan saw all of this and knew that some people were just jealous. She found an excuse and said:
"Aunties, my dad is still waiting for us to bring him breakfast at the clinic. When we get back, if you ask again, we'll definitely tell you."
After saying that, she picked up her basket, pulled Su Shi around, and left. Behind them, Xiao Gang, with his honest face, said, "Aunties, if you find any Ganoderma lucidum, take it to Zang Baicao Medical Clinic to sell. They won't rip you off there."
Father Li didn't object to building a new house. He even offered a suggestion: "There are nearly two acres of wasteland behind our house, which the village chief originally allocated to us as our homesteads. Don't demolish the old house; just build the new house on that land. I can't go back to help right now, so Xiao Yang, please keep an eye on things and ask your Uncle Zhou Chuan and the others for help."
Xiao Yang listened attentively and nodded in agreement. At noon, he went back to the village to discuss it with his trusted uncles. That noon, Li Xiaonuan finally kept her promise and went to Yingkelai Restaurant for vegetarian noodles. The waiter remembered them and warmly welcomed them.
