"Eldest daughter, what brings you here? Have you run into some trouble?"
The door to the main room faced the front door. Jiang Shoutian saw Lin Shuyun arrive and asked her a question.
The food he sent last time was probably all gone, and he had planned to go there today, but the house was in an uproar again.
Lin Shuyun came in and glanced at the courtyard with its red tiles and white walls.
"Dad, our house has been burgled. The things I just bought are gone. I just saw the thief enter the yard."
Just then, Mrs. Xu, who had just finished having diarrhea, arrived and, upon hearing this, immediately began to curse.
"You little whore, when did I take your things?"
"When did I say you took it? I said you were a thief. Don't confess without being asked."
The sun had already set, and Lin Shuyun, too lazy to waste any more words, went straight into the Jiang family's kitchen.
Mrs. Xu put the rice and flour in the cupboard under the chopping board, and Lin Shuyun went in and took them out.
"This thief is really good at stealing. There's even my husband's name written on it. He just blatantly stole it without even bothering to change the bag."
Lin Shuyun showed Jiang Shoutian the name on the bag of flour; she had been anticipating this, so she had written her name on it.
Jiang Shoutian knew a few words and had a conscience; upon seeing the name, he knew immediately what Xu had done.
He was so embarrassed that his face turned red.
"This is outrageous! This is my grain, how dare you steal it!"
Xu rushed forward to hit Lin Shuyun, but Jiang Shoutian grabbed her.
"Alright, that's too much for a mother-in-law, eldest daughter-in-law, this..."
Jiang Shoutian awkwardly tried to explain.
Jiang Shuixian, clutching her stomach, said shrilly, "What do you mean 'your'? You didn't even have a bundle when you married into this family, so where did you get all this white flour and refined rice?"
Her mother brought back nice things without hiding it from her; she also wanted to eat white rice.
"That's right, you little bastard, put it down!"
Xu shook off Jiang Shoutian and snatched the flour sack.
Just as Lin Shuyun was about to make a move, she caught a glimpse of a group of villagers gathered at the door watching the commotion. She covered her face with her sleeve and began to wail in a high-pitched voice.
"Good heavens! I just got married and I had to go up the mountain to dig for wild vegetables and medicinal herbs to exchange for money. What new bride goes out to work before she's even three days old? But we had no choice. If we didn't go, we would starve to death. We finally managed to buy some food, but my mother still tried to take it from us. Is she trying to force us to our deaths?"
"Father! Mother! My husband is still ill. He is your own son too. Please, have mercy on him!"
Lin Shuyun was beautiful, and when she cried so softly, the onlookers at the door pointed and whispered about Jiang Shoutian and Madam Xu.
Furthermore, it was common knowledge that they kept Jiang Changtian in a small, dilapidated house.
Are these really my parents? They're so cruel.
Jiang Shoutian had lived most of his life without ever losing face.
Lin Shuyun's words struck him like a thorn in his heart, and he reached out to snatch the flour bag from Xu's hand.
"Give it back!"
How could the Xu family simply return the food that was already in their hands? They clung to it tightly, refusing to let go, and even scolded Lin Shuyun.
“She bought things but didn’t share them with me, her mother-in-law. She secretly ate them all by herself. Tomorrow I’ll go to the Lin family and ask them what kind of daughter they have.”
She's the mother-in-law, and filial piety is paramount. From the highest to the lowest level, Lin Shuyun would have to be dutiful to her even in death.
Lin Shuyun clenched her fists, which she wanted to punch, and said in a high-pitched voice, "Where have I been unfilial to you? You drank all the soup, didn't you? You didn't even leave any for Dad. My husband and I need to eat too. You should at least leave us some food."
"Let go!"
Jiang Shoutian pushed Xu Shi to the ground, snatched the flour sack, and handed it to Lin Shuyun.
Lin Shuyun took the bag of flour and glanced at the door.
"Father, my husband is still waiting at the door. I'll go back first. The doctor in town said that my husband's leg can be cured."
"Really? It can be cured?!"
Jiang Shoutian was so happy that he ran to the door without thinking about anything else.
As soon as I stepped outside, I saw my son sitting steadily on the donkey cart, and my nose immediately stung with tears.
"Boss, you look much better."
Jiang Changtian, who had just been surrounded by people asking him all sorts of questions, sighed when he saw Jiang Shoutian.
"Much better, she won't die. Dad, please take care of Mom, or your son will feel disheartened."
"Your mother, she..."
"You unfilial beast! Well, so that's why Lin Shi had such audacity—it was you who instigated her!"
Jiang Shoutian wanted to say a few nice words to Xu Shi, but Xu Shi chased after him, cursing and swearing.
Seeing the disappointment in his son's eyes, Jiang Shoutian was instantly enraged. He grabbed Xu's hair, dragged her into the yard, and slammed the gate shut.
Then came punches, kicks, and Ms. Xu's screams.
In the countryside, beating one's wife is as common as eating and drinking. Everyone listened to the commotion, and some even cheered from behind the door, urging her to beat him harder.
After watching the spectacle, they lingered around the donkey cart, asking Jiang Changtian and Lin Shuyun all sorts of questions for a while before finally leaving.
Lin Shuyun watched as Jiang Changtian gently saw off the last relative, her third aunt, before driving the donkey cart home.
That evening, she came again to deliver a generous gift to Madam Xu.
As soon as the donkey cart arrived at the gate, a young man wearing a long robe and a straw hat peeked out from behind his back.
Lin Shuyun parked the donkey cart at the door, and the young man almost bumped into the donkey mouth-to-mouth when he turned his head.
Startled, she looked up and saw Lin Shuyun, her face flushed red and she stammered.
"Excuse me... is this Jiang Changtian's house? I'm looking for Jiang Changtian."
Lin Shuyun turned her head and glanced at the donkey cart. "Husband, it's looking for you."
"Brother Changtian?!"
The man stared wide-eyed at Jiang Changtian on the donkey cart, "Your face..."
"Who are you?" Jiang Changtian frowned.
"Brother Changtian, it's me! I'm Feng Hao! Don't you recognize me?"
Feng Hao's voice choked slightly.
Jiang Changtian looked at him and remained silent for a moment before speaking, "Sorry, I've been feeling groggy and didn't quite realize what was going on. What brings you here?"
"I came to see you, but your face is so badly injured. I almost didn't recognize you just now." Feng Hao couldn't help but feel sad when he looked at Jiang Changtian. "It's my fault. I should have come to see you sooner."
"Let's go inside and talk. This is my wife," Jiang Changtian introduced Lin Shuyun.
Feng Hao glanced at Lin Shuyun, his face flushed slightly, and he quickly bowed his head to greet her, "Hello, sister-in-law."
"Hello," Lin Shuyun replied, driving the donkey cart into the yard.
"You two go inside and talk, I'll go cook."
As Lin Shuyun spoke, she carried Jiang Changtian into the room and onto the kang (a heated brick bed). Feng Hao, who was following behind, stared wide-eyed.
Once inside and seated, he realized, "Sister-in-law is incredibly strong; Brother Changtian is truly blessed."
Jiang Changtian coughed lightly to cover up his embarrassment.
Lin Shuyun smiled.
Just as she stepped outside, a dark figure suddenly darted into her arms.
"Coal Ball, where did you go just now?"
Lin Shuyun then remembered that she had forgotten about the coal ball when she left the Jiang family's house. Fortunately, the little thing knew to come home.
The coal ball, with a cloth bag dangling from its mouth, looked up as if seeking praise.
Lin Shuyun took it, opened it, and saw that there were five taels of silver inside. Her eyes lit up instantly!
"Coal Ball, you're such a lucky star for your sister! I love you to death, I'll be relying on you to take care of me from now on!"
After saying that, he picked up the coal ball and gave it a kiss on the forehead.
Coal Ball, looking shy, meowed, "Woman, be a little more reserved. From now on, I'll take care of you. Your crippled husband is useless; you should dump him as soon as possible."
Inside the room, Jiang Changtian suddenly crushed the teapot handle.
