Firefly Journey

Chapter 5 These Youngsters (5)

The seemingly ferocious roar came from the little guy in front of me.

This is a small bird with white feathers and blue claws, and it is even smaller than Piero's water glass.

The man and the bird stared at each other. Perhaps seeing a stranger, the white bird, perched in the bushes, cried out incessantly, clearly regarding Lin Yuanran as a predator.

Upon seeing the real person, Lin Yuanran was naturally not frightened by the little guy's cries. The reason it was like that was because there was a patch of bright red blood on its blue claws, indicating that it was injured and unable to fly.

"I'm a good person." Lin Yuanran smiled. Now things are much easier. Since it's a winged demon beast cub that poses no real danger, there's no need to worry anymore. He can go straight home.

After walking a few steps, the white bird was still calling, even though it was in the same tone as before, but now, all Lin Yuanran could hear was a sobbing sound.

"Fine, what can I do? I'm a good person." Lin Yuanran turned back and, without saying a word, grabbed the little bird.

The white bird thought he was attacking and struggled, flapping its wings. However, Lin Yuanran slapped it once, and it immediately became docile.

"Don't move, let me see."

Lin Yuanran looked around at the bird's claws. The wounds were not caused by accident, but by some sharp weapon. That was normal, since the Yedeen Mountains, where magical beasts roamed, were governed by the law of the jungle.

"I guess I'm just unlucky. This six-leaf mugwort is specially for treating external injuries. Here, you can use it." With that, Lin Yuanran took out the herb, rubbed it in his palm, and then applied it to the wound.

At this moment, seemingly sensing Lin Yuanran's goodwill, the white bird stopped struggling and remained silent.

Lin Yuanran held it in his palm and carefully placed it on the branch, thus avoiding some dangers from the ground.

After doing all this, Lin Yuanran really left.

To be honest, he wasn't a compassionate person. Even if he saved the bird, it might immediately be eaten by another predator. But he couldn't bear to just leave it, so he could only hope that if the bird survived, it wouldn't do anything bad.

Humming a song, Lin Yuanran descended the mountain with light steps, encountering no unexpected events along the way. It seems that, through word of mouth over the years, the locals have demonized the Yedeen Mountains. But that's for the better; there are no competitors in the herb-gathering profession.

When he returned, it was already half dark. As he approached his home, he could see a figure sitting on the exposed roots of a large tree in the distance.

Lin Yuanran had good eyesight and greeted her from a distance, saying, "Who do we have here? It's the little elf from the Jupes family. If you don't look closely, you might mistake her for a thief."

Wendy stood up, pouting slightly, "The good and bad are even. Since you praised me, I won't hold you accountable for teasing me."

Lin Yuanran put down his basket, opened the door, and welcomed her into the house: "You came to see me this evening, is there something you need?"

Wendy said, "I went to Solo Bakery today, but I didn't see you. You didn't even tell me you were leaving."

Lin Yuanran said, "People can't be satisfied with the status quo, right? Well, I'll tell you now, from now on, I'm the only herb gatherer in Torreg. Isn't that great?"

"Aren't you afraid of dying?!" Wendy, a native of Torreg, had been greatly influenced by the adults and held the Yedern Mountains in awe.

"Don't worry, I'm unharmed. Look, that's my spoils for today." Lin Yuanran pointed to the bamboo basket in the corner.

The bamboo basket contained several medicinal herbs, their roots still covered in soil. Wendy didn't recognize them, but she could imagine how hard Ario had gone to collect them.

She suddenly said, without any apparent reason, "In a few months, I will turn sixteen."

"Really? What kind of gift do you want? A big jar of Ibiza candies?"

Ibiza is the capital of the Principality of Bema, a prosperous and industrialized country whose sweets are renowned throughout the Pangaea.

"Either is fine." Wendy's voice suddenly turned cold.

Lin Yuanran understood why; in the countryside of Rhine Province, it wasn't uncommon for girls to marry at sixteen. The original owner of this body had a very close relationship with her, but three months ago, the boy she loved had completely disappeared.

The person in front of me is just a stranger who has taken over someone else's place.

Lin Yuanran is actually eighteen years old. Although she is not much older than her, she has experienced the lifestyle on Earth and her perspective and values are very different from hers. Even if she has merged with the original owner's memories, it is not easy for her to accept him.

This isn't just a moral issue; it also involves whether or not one likes someone. Wendy is indeed very beautiful, with delicate skin that looks like it could be squeezed for water, but Lin Yuanran only sees her as a younger sister at most; marriage is out of the question.

Firstly, he genuinely had no romantic feelings for Wendy; his kindness towards her stemmed solely from lingering memories of the original owner and his appreciation for beautiful things.

Secondly, he will have to go back sooner or later. What would it look like if he had a family? So he would never agree. We can just brush it off.

In Lin Yuanran's memory, he clearly knew that the original owner also liked this elfin girl. Rejecting her on the spot wouldn't be good, because he couldn't very well say, "I possessed the boy you like," Wendy certainly wouldn't believe it. So, gradually fading the relationship was better for both of them.

“It’s getting late. If you don’t go back soon, Uncle Engel will be looking for you everywhere. I don’t want your whole family coming here with knives, guns, and clubs,” Lin Yuanran said with a smile.

"Oh, I understand." After saying that, Wendy went to open the door and walk out.

Lin Yuanran took out the herbs and followed them outside.

“Um… I heard from Olek that you frequent his pub, so drink less,” Wendy said.

Lin Yuanran chuckled softly. The jealousy of a young man was truly amusing, but it didn't matter: "I'm only a few months younger than you, and I'll be able to stand on my own two feet soon. It's perfectly reasonable for me to have a drink, isn't it?"

Wendy thought about it and realized that Ario was right. As long as he wasn't an alcoholic or a gambler like Dupipon's father, it was still within acceptable limits. After all, there were few people in the Principality of Bema who didn't drink alcohol, and her own father would occasionally have a few drinks.

I'm really leaving!

"Take care, luminous sprite."

These farewell words instantly cheered Wendy up, and she disappeared into the end of the road with cheerful steps.

After seeing the girl off, Lin Yuanran found a shovel and a spade, dug holes in the vegetable garden in front of the door, and buried them in the soil again.

This storage method has significant drawbacks; if the herbs don't adapt to the new environment, they may wither. Some herbs are only effective when withered, while others must be harvested while still green. Lin Yuanran wasn't an experienced herb gatherer, so he had to resort to this rudimentary method.

They were all planted in the ground at once. If they survived, great; if not, so be it. Of all these, one or two would surely be sold.

It seems that every industry is difficult to succeed in; you need professional knowledge. I need to put in some effort.
