Firefly Journey

Chapter 46 The Vanished Companion (5)

In the pitch-black darkness, Lin Yuanran's hand remained raised, becoming the only light in the long night.

"We're almost there," said the wind chime.

The compass in her hand suddenly stopped spinning, without even the slightest deviation, indicating that she was heading straight for her destination.

Lin Yuanran always kept a half-step behind Fengling and didn't say much, because communicating with her was a very discouraging thing; the other party's genius made Lin Yuanran feel ashamed of himself.

The faint flame flickered in the darkness, like a lantern made of fireflies; it wasn't bright, but it was enough.

"We're here!" Lin Yuanran said with some joy. In front of them was an arched entrance, but it was too far away to see inside.

The two quickened their pace and soon arrived at the entrance. Looking inside, it was still pitch black. Lin Yuanran's fire magic was still in its early stages, and the range of light he could provide was limited.

Fengling took out her small lamp, and with the "lamp oil" deliberately added, the visible area was much larger, and the two of them could see the internal structure clearly.

It's a very ordinary room, with a bed, a table, and a shelf.

The bed was a stone bed, the table was a stone table, and the shelves were made of wood, which was different from the stone shelf house they had seen before.

"This...is no one living here, is it?" Lin Yuanran asked without thinking, though he just wanted to lighten the mood.

To everyone's surprise, the wind chime said, "That's possible."

"?"

Lin Yuanran, who had only mentioned it casually, was so shocked by Feng Ling's words that he felt a chill run down his spine. It really was true?! He had always regarded Feng Ling as an authority, so he hadn't questioned it at all.

Fengling seemed to sense his unease and shook her head to herself, thinking, "If you're so timid, why don't you stay outside?"

“Alright, looking at the layout here, it should be a replica of Krumbo’s residence before his fall. A living person… a god, where would he live in a place like this?” Wind Chime decided to stop teasing him.

"That's good." Lin Yuanran exaggeratedly touched his chest to calm himself down.

"Here's your key back." Wind Chime tossed the "convenience key" aside. "Look carefully and see if His treasure is here."

Lin Yuanran hummed in agreement, holding up the artificial torch and exploring in the dim light.

There was nothing on the shelf, so Lin Yuanran searched around, saying as he looked, "You know, there were already a lot of good things in that place before. If there were something even better than those, how amazing would that be?"

Wind Chime searched on the other side: "I don't know, but it won't be stronger than the Ancestral Artifact."

“Ancestral artifact…” Lin Yuanran murmured, “I remember you said that the Holy See’s ancestral artifact is enshrined in the cathedral. Have you seen it? What does it look like?”

As a student at an academy under the Church of Light, Wind Chime had seen him several times during prayers. Seeing his interest, she recounted the details.

"It is a halo of light, radiating a sacred glow. It is guarded by bishops on a rotating basis. Outsiders are forbidden from entering the place where it is enshrined, not even believers. Generally speaking, only core members can come into contact with it."

I only had the opportunity to see it because of my good grades, which led to a school-organized memorial service.

Below the Pope of the Holy See are three high priests, who are in charge of the three departments of "Judgment", "Trial" and "Conquest", respectively. They correspond to the three guardian cavalry forces of "Dawn", "Sunrise" and "Sunrise".

Each high priest has three archbishops under him, who together form the upper echelons of the papacy's administration. It is said that each archbishop is at least a demigod. Going back further, the elusive Pope is probably already at the level of a true god.

Perhaps this is why the Pope has not appeared in public for many years. Ordinary matters are handled by the High Priest, and he is only contacted through special means for truly significant events that cannot be definitively determined.

When Lin Yuanran first heard this news, he was deeply shocked. A god was actually walking among humans, which was completely different from the mythological knowledge he had on Earth.

Feng Ling and the others told him that this was not strange. The ancestral god had fallen, but his followers continued to follow in his footsteps, and the best among them ascended to the realm of gods.

Once they reach that level, they often choose to leave the papacy and go to the kingdom of the ancestral gods.

Some say that the so-called divine kingdom is the ruins of the ancestral gods, but this has never been proven.

The Vatican's apparent strength consists of the Pope, three archpriests, and nine bishops, with its core force being three cavalry units.

Anyone with even a slight understanding of the Ancestral God Church knows that the truth is more complex. If the church encounters a truly difficult problem, it can contact the Kingdom of God through certain rituals. It is not uncommon for the deity worshipped by the believers to descend in his true form.

“I’m envious…” Lin Yuanran said softly.

"Envy is useless. Those things are only for looking at; they don't belong to any of us." The wind chime poured cold water on it.

There are only seven Ancestral Artifacts in the world, which shows how rare they are. Moreover, the more powerful the artifact, the less likely it is that ordinary extraordinary beings can wield it. The restrictions on using the "Sun of Julius" are extremely stringent; one must be at least a demigod, meaning one must reach the level of an archbishop…

Nevertheless, the power that a demigod can unleash is limited. If it comes to the point where an ancestral artifact is needed to resolve the trouble, then it means that the Holy See has encountered a truly major event. At that time, how could the ancestral artifact be left to a demigod to wield? It would be more likely to be handled by a true god, such as that mysterious pope.

"Okay, what's up?"

"What? What's wrong?"

"Why did you stab me if there was nothing wrong?"

I'm at least ten meters away from you.

"Huh? I..." Lin Yuanran subconsciously uttered a word about the original world's national essence. He turned his head instantly and saw that there was indeed a hand on his shoulder, but it was not the hand of the wind chime, but a piece of wood.

"That couple!"

Lin Yuanran recognized him and quickly dodged to the side. The puppet followed closely behind.

Upon hearing Lin Yuanran's terrified scream, Fengling immediately turned around and saw him being chased.

With a slight movement of his hand, the staff appeared, and a thunderous decree pierced the air, blasting the puppet in two.

"Phew!" Lin Yuanran was still in shock. After taking a deep breath, he looked up at his savior, Feng Ling. Behind her, a hand had also appeared!

"Behind us!" Lin Yuanran shouted.

Fengling belatedly tried to turn her head, but it was too late. The puppet's arm had already touched her back, and a cold aura enveloped her.

puff!

Feng Ling's body, like a kite with a broken string, lunged towards Lin Yuanran, who swiftly stepped forward and caught her.

"Are you alright?!" Lin Yuanran shouted anxiously.

The wind chime leaned against his shoulder, saying nothing, which spoke volumes; the problem was definitely not small.

"Get out here!" Lin Yuanran shouted.

"You're the one who let me out, so don't be afraid."

From the shadows, a voice rang out, and the figure of the speaker gradually became clear, matching that of Ram Rachel.
