Firefly Journey

Chapter 43 The Vanished Companion (2)

The thunderbolt struck the giant's head, but it was unharmed and instead became even more ferocious.

Monsters are generally not very intelligent, but the Creator seems to favor them, endowing them with powerful bodies that are disproportionate to their intelligence.

Faced with the formidable mountain giant, Cassius Bello dared not confront it directly, for that would undoubtedly put him in a desperate situation. To fight it with sheer strength would require at least ten years of brain damage.

“I can’t let it threaten the Divine Ruins. Hmm, maybe I can lead it in circles.” Cassius thought, moving his body in the opposite direction of the Divine Ruins. “Maybe I can take it away from the Yedeen Mountains.”

The giant on the mountaintop roared and chased after Cassius, completely unaware that he was getting further and further away from the entrance to the Divine Ruins.

From within the clouds, a sharp gaze descended, its presence well concealed, unnoticed by anyone.

After a chase, Cassius was panting heavily. A few more steps and he would be out of the range of the Yedeen Mountains.

Without hesitation, Cassius, lifted by the power of the wind, crossed the mountain boundary and stopped outside the mountain range, facing the mountain giant that was chasing him, as if in a provocation.

However, the giant on the mountaintop seemed to have suddenly gained enlightenment, stopping in the mountains and refusing to come out no matter how much Cassius provoked him.

“There are limitations? The limitations can’t come from within itself. Leaving the Yedeen Mountains has no effect on it. Perhaps… the control range of the person behind it is just this big, and once it exceeds that range, it will be impossible to maintain control.”

"Then the mastermind must still be in the mountains!"

"Who could it be, Lumer? Orlando? It can't be me..."

"No, maybe he never showed his face at all, and was observing our actions from the shadows the whole time, waiting to steal the spoils of victory at the crucial moment. Hmm, that's quite possible!"

In just a few dozen seconds, countless thoughts flashed through Cassius's mind. The mountaintop giant was unable to leave the mountain range, only roaring and howling at the edge. He decided to pull off a clever escape.

He took a small step back, but his body remained rooted to the spot. His handsome face suddenly lost its luster, and his eyes became empty.

Almost simultaneously, a gust of wind blew by, and his body immediately plummeted into the bushes.

The clay sculpture of "Cassius" continues its provocative pose, but appears quite wooden. A closer look by another person would reveal the anomaly, but given the intelligence of the mountain giant, it wouldn't be surprising if it maintained this posture for as long as possible.

Cassius himself had already followed the bushes and circled the path towards the entrance of the Divine Ruins.

……

……

The atmosphere in the advancing group was somewhat gloomy, the scene from just moments ago still lingering in everyone's minds. First, the greedy superhuman disappeared without a trace, then the puppeteer couple died together. Such an experience would leave anyone unmoved, especially since most of these people were still quite young.

Finne Roberts was in no better condition than Lin Yuanran. It was also the first time she had seen someone die in front of her. She was in a daze and was supported by Jamie the whole time.

In the pitch-black passage, a few faint lights shone through. After walking for about an hour, another large door appeared in the cave wall ahead.

"We have to go in and take a look," said Steve, who was at the front. "We're all here to take advantage of the Old Gods. There could be good stuff anywhere. Why let our scary experiences make us suspicious?"

The door wasn't locked, and Steve pushed it open.

Just then, the giant brother Butler suddenly shouted anxiously, "Obadiah is missing! Everyone, my brother is missing!!"

Obadiah was the youngest of the three giant brothers. At this moment, his second brother, Pitman, also noticed him. His face was full of anxiety as he looked around frantically. However, there was no sign of Obadiah anywhere, only endless darkness.

It was only then that Lin Yuanran noticed that one of the three giant brothers was missing. A sense of dread immediately welled up in his heart; the sealed space, the unknown road ahead... all these factors combined were truly terrifying.

Fortunately, he didn't have claustrophobia, otherwise the situation would have been worse, so he had no choice but to move closer to Fengling and the others.

"You just noticed it?" Wind Chime asked.

Butler adjusted his trembling voice: "I saw him just two minutes ago, I swear, and then he just vanished!"

Fleeting? Lin Yuanran thought, isn't that just like those crystal miners?

This is too bizarre...

"Don't worry, there's no use in worrying." Feng Ling remained relatively calm, after all, it wasn't a student from St. Louis who had disappeared.

For a time, everyone was on edge, and fear began to creep into their minds.

"I have to go back and find him!" Butler suddenly said. The three brothers came out together, and if one of them was missing when they returned, how could they explain it to their parents? The three brothers had been very close since childhood, and they could not possibly stand idly by at a time like this!

"Calm down!" Steve roared, raising his voice. "You're in danger even when you're alone. Don't you understand that?!"

The second-in-command, Pittman, was more rational and advised his elder brother, "Don't do this. This kind of disappearance is beyond our understanding. Acting blindly will only put us in danger. Brother, don't be impulsive!"

Then, he patted Butler on the shoulder heavily.

"I...I understand." Butler touched his face, forcibly banishing his anxiety; his expression was as ugly as could be.

“Brother, relax. The way we came is blocked, and we probably can’t go back the way we came. Once we get Krumbo’s real treasure, we might be able to figure out all of His methods. Then, maybe we can find your brother.” Steve comforted him, but he didn’t believe these words himself.

The two giant brothers calmed down a bit, and the group pushed open the door and walked towards the space in the cave.

“Building a bridge inside the Divine Ruins? Do you think Klenbo is out of his mind?” Paninger said, looking at the broken rock wall in front of him.

A wooden bridge, made of planks, hangs between the split cliffs. Incredibly, it is completely undamaged, making it hard to believe that it was built a thousand years ago.

"Anyway, he's smarter than you," Fwayne remarked wittily at the opportune moment.

“Go over there, but no, there’s definitely danger! Why don’t you go check it out first?” Paninger said.

“If you can fly, of course you can go see it. But what if the bridge suddenly collapses halfway down and I fall in? It’s bottomless there, I’m scared,” Fway said.

Paninger thought about it and realized that it made sense, so he flapped his wings and decided to fly to the middle to take a look.

"Ouch!" Less than three meters off the ground, Paninger's body fell uncontrollably and landed on the ground. She touched her bottom and said, "I feel like someone pulled me down."

Fengling said, "It seems that He wants to force us to take the bridge."

"Can't we go back and use the passage..." Lin Yuanran said. This door was on the side of the cave wall and was a branch of the original passage. Since the way ahead was strange, it was better to go around it.

Feng Ling said, "There might be other checkpoints at the end of that road. It's all the same everywhere."

Upon hearing this, Lin Yuanran felt it made sense. No matter which path one takes, one will face unknown things, so they are actually quite similar.
