Firefly Journey
Chapter 26 Major Events in the Small Town (2)
Dupippen brought Curry and the others back home, where the house was already surrounded by nearby residents. In the crowd, his mother, Sandra, sat slumped next to her husband, who was not breathing, and sobbed softly.
"Mom, are you alright!" Sandra hugged her son tightly, her sobs growing louder as if she wanted to release all her grief.
Seeing this scene, everyone felt a little sorry for him. How could a drunkard have such a happy family? He really had a death wish.
Curry drew his longsword halfway out of its sheath and shooed away the townspeople who had gathered to watch the commotion: "This is the crime scene. Please do not linger here. However, I will question you later, and I hope you will be forthcoming with your information."
With the mayor speaking, the townspeople dispersed, whispering amongst themselves and speculating about the cause of Old Du Pippen's death.
“Let me introduce you. This is the Principality’s special envoy from Ibiza. He will give you justice,” said Curry Ward.
Cassius nodded to the mother and son, then squatted down, examined the dead body for a while, and frowned.
There wasn't a single minor wound on the deceased's body, but it didn't appear to be an internal injury. If it were poisoning, there should have been some color change on the skin.
After a brief initial examination, Cassius concluded that this was the work of a superhuman.
So here's the question: the Dupippon family was just an insignificant household in a small town. How could they possibly have met superhumans, let alone been murdered in a vendetta?
Could it be a case of hiring someone to commit murder?
Cassius quickly dismissed the idea, deciding to ask a superhuman for help, since there weren't any wealthy people in the town with that kind of financial resources.
Cassius examined Old DuPippen again. He noticed some residual magical energy on his body, which didn't match his original physique. This indicated that the energy was left behind after an attack, ruling out the possibility that Old DuPippen was a superhuman.
"Baboon, you and Hauglis go take a walk around the neighborhood and see if you can find any clues," Cassius assigned the task.
"Okay, teacher." The two brothers put their arms around each other's shoulders and went out.
Then he said to Curry, "Mayor, it's almost certain that this is a case of murder by a superhuman. It's not something you can handle. Protect the victim's family, and I'll take care of the investigation."
Curry Ward was just waiting for those words: "Let me track down superhumans? Do you even care about your life?" Even with the status of a duchy official, it wasn't exactly safe. After all, the fact that they dared to make a move meant they didn't take the duchy seriously at all.
“Alright, I will also gather the police officers to actively conduct investigations and assist you in solving the case.” He turned to Dupipon and his mother and said, “Mrs. Sandra, little Dupipon, don’t worry. Trust in the Principality’s capabilities. It will not let its people live in fear.”
Sandra nodded wearily and, supported by her son, left the crime scene, turning back every few steps, her reluctance evident. Curry Ward followed closely behind.
After they left, Cassius said, "Paninger, it's time for you to show what you've learned."
Paninger agreed, and her alluring wings suddenly unfurled. She closed her eyes, seemingly in meditation.
Oracle. Retrospection.
Paninger is a second-awakened "Time Punisher," a path belonging to the magic of fate. His first awakening is called "Time Mage," and his third awakening is "Time Controller."
Paninger, now in a spellcasting state, rewound the timeline of the house to several hours earlier.
"Not enough, it needs to be moved further forward."
As time continued to pass inside the room, Paninger gritted his teeth and persevered.
Finally, about ten hours earlier, she vaguely saw what was happening inside the room.
The door was pushed open from the outside, and Du Pippen, carrying a wine jug, stumbled back home, drunk. He was alone in the empty house, drinking by himself, and then, strange things began to happen.
Sitting on the stool, he suddenly went berserk and fell to the ground, the wine jug rolling away with him.
In the dim light, Old Du and Pippen suddenly clutched their heads in pain, seemingly accompanied by a hysterical scream. Paninger couldn't hear it; she hadn't reached that level yet.
"call!"
Unable to hold on any longer, Paninger ended the regression state and told his teacher what he had seen and heard. Meanwhile, Alan, who was in the shadows, seemed to be deep in thought.
"In other words, after he got home, no one came to see him; he simply collapsed and died," Cassius said.
"Is such that."
Alan rarely commented: "According to you, the deceased seemed to be shouting at the end, so why didn't any neighbors hear it?"
Cassius said, "You'll know once you try it."
Cassius crouched down, extended two fingers, probed Durant and Pippen's throat, and then withdrew them in an instant.
"His vocal cords were damaged, so no matter how much pain he was in, he couldn't make a sound."
"Which of those outsiders has this kind of method?"
Cassius pondered for a moment, "It's hard to say. Anyone could be involved, but based on the information we have, it's very likely that it's the work of a follower of an evil god."
"Cultists of evil gods?" Paninger's expression changed. "Should we report this?"
A flicker of hesitation crossed Cassius Bello's eyes, but he quickly suppressed it and said, "Don't worry, I can handle it."
"Allen, you've been working hard lately, so please keep an eye on things here."
“Okay,” Allen said.
Then, the teacher and student went outside and summoned back the baboon and Hauglis. Along with them came Wind Chime Girl, who was unwilling to stay with the main group.
And a silver-haired boy who insisted on coming along.
Upon seeing Lin Yuanran, Cassius was somewhat surprised: "What brings you here?"
"Isn't this a practical lesson?" Lin Yuanran said shamelessly.
In fact, Lin Yuanran had his own reasons for insisting on coming along: to gain a better understanding of the world by experiencing extraordinary events.
On the other hand, he and Dupippen had just parted ways when this terrible news came from Dupippen's family. After all, they were classmates, so it would be good to be able to help out with even the smallest favor.
Cassius ignored Lin Yuanran; let him come if he wanted, one more wouldn't make a difference. He then explained his deductions and asked, "Have you found anything nearby?"
"Everything is normal," Fway said.
“Go and make your own visits, but don’t be too conspicuous. Focus on investigating those with superhuman abilities,” Cassius said.
"okay."
"Paninger, could you do this one more time and notify Curry to come and deal with the deceased?"
Curry was probably trying to persuade the mother and child at that moment.
"Okay," Paninger replied lazily, a hint of weariness in her voice. The retrospection had drained her of too much energy, and she needed to rest.
After everyone had taken on their roles, only Cassius, Wind Chime, and Lin Yuanran, who was just there to make up the numbers, remained.
"What do you think?" Cassius asked Fengling. The Xu family's daughter possessed extraordinary intelligence and was someone who could be of help. She was usually quiet and reserved, perhaps because geniuses and ordinary people had nothing in common.
Fengling said, "Most of the extraordinary individuals who come here come from well-known churches. They dare not act recklessly, as they are concerned about the duchy's repercussions."
Those from humble backgrounds have no motive to commit the crime, nor would they dare to provoke the duchy. Believers of the evil god must exist among them; perhaps we should devise a plan to lure them out.”
Lin Yuanran nodded repeatedly, impressed by their impressive appearance, but he couldn't say a word.
