Firefly Journey

Chapter 115 The Cat in the Sewer (2)

The Demos family.

Kahlil Gibran Demos, the head of the Demos family, still had golden hair despite his advanced age, showing no signs of aging. His large, piercing eyes sent chills down one's spine wherever they swept across.

Even someone as composed as Morgan couldn't help but lower his head slightly.

"Do you really have to marry her?" Kahlil Gibran asked.

Morgan frowned and looked up: "Have I not been firm enough?"

Kahlil Gibran said, “Too resolute, child. But I heard that the little girl from the Xu family doesn’t like you and is getting close to a wild child from the Rhine countryside.”

Morgan was determined to facilitate this marriage, and as the head of the Demos family, he naturally needed to understand the situation thoroughly. The more he learned, the more he realized that the matter was not simple, and his beloved grandson seemed to be in a passive position, which displeased him greatly.

A person destined for greatness will likely fail to achieve great things if they have a weakness.

Originally, Gibran was very satisfied with Morgan in all aspects and wanted to groom him as his successor. However, after hearing about this matter, he began to have some concerns.

The little girl from the Xu family was very lovable when she was young; no one could dislike her. But the problem is that children will eventually grow up, and growing up means independence and having their own ideas.

When it comes to matters of the heart, you can't force them.

If Morgan can't even get past the hurdle of a beautiful woman, he's undoubtedly immature, so how can we entrust such a large family to him?

“Wind Chime doesn’t like Ario, Grandfather. That boy isn’t a wild child. His name is Ario Morris, and he’s Mr. Cassius’s student.”

When Cassius was mentioned, Morgan's tone was filled with undisguised envy.

He had been eager to get into Class 29, not just for the wind chimes, but also because he wanted to become a student of the great and virtuous teacher, which was an extremely honorable thing.

Unfortunately, Cassius refused, and his reason was simple: "Your heart is impure; I don't want you."

Wherein lies his impure intention?

It certainly doesn't apply to the wind chimes; everyone has someone they like, it's human nature. What Cassius was referring to was that he valued family power highly and always prioritized family interests in any decision he made.

Cassius's philosophy, however, is... people-oriented, which is fundamentally contradictory to the idea; they are completely incompatible.

"It sounds like you don't dislike him."

"Yes, on the contrary, I like him very much."

Morgan wasn't lying; he was born into a privileged family and had never experienced life at the bottom. He admired those who rose from humble beginnings to achieve success—Cassius was one, and so was Ario.

"And Fengling doesn't like him."

It's true that Wind Chime and Ario are close, but the way they look at each other is normal; there's nothing more to it—they're just friends.

At least for now.

Morgan was adept at reading people and was confident he wouldn't make a mistake. Of course, if he did, there was nothing he could do; could he really decide who liked whom?

“I like her indifference to everything, or her dislike of everyone, or her finding many things troublesome.”

“Then you’re really a scoundrel,” Kahlil Gibran said irritably.

“Grandfather, she wasn’t like this when she was little. Maybe she went through something as she grew up that made her like this…”

"Nonsense, of course I know what she looked like when she was little. I even held her a few times. What about you? Did you even touch her finger?"

"I touched it when I was a child, but not anymore."

"Useless!"

"But I will try my best."

"Do as you please, just don't embarrass the Demos family later. Also, I heard your academy is going to hold some kind of grand competition, you?"

Morgan sighed: "I will try my best to qualify as a representative. By the way, grandfather, I have good news. I estimate that I will be able to advance to 'Brilliant One' before the qualifying battle."

He is currently a "Brilliant Mage" with no side profession, which means that he has had a smooth journey in his cultivation and has never failed.

“Since you want it, I will help you get it,” Gibran said. “The old man from the Xu family is very ambitious and will not refuse the marriage proposal. The only variable is the girl herself.”

Morgan smiled, as if he had made a decision: "That's enough. Give me time, and she will definitely see what kind of person I am. I believe everything will go back to how it was when I was a child."

Once a person grows up, they are forever at odds with their childhood self, especially someone like Feng Ling. But he seemed unwilling to believe this fact.

……

……

"Where are we?"

After following Mo Lin for half a day, Lin Yuanran's arms were tired from holding up, but the guy was still impatient, as if there was no end in sight.

"Ah? This... I'm not quite sure," Morin said sheepishly.

"You don't know? How are we supposed to get out if we don't know?" Lin Yuanran exclaimed, "That's unreliable!"

"It'll be ready soon, right?" Maureen said, forcing a smile. "The cheese flavor is getting stronger and stronger!"

"It better be!"

Whoosh!

Just as the two were feeling listless, a lightning-fast figure swept past them, moving so fast that their true appearance was impossible to discern.

This sudden turn of events terrified Morin. He moved closer to Lin Yuanran and asked in fear, "What...what was that just now?"

Lin Yuanran couldn't see clearly either, but he was ultimately bolder than Lin Yuanran: "Maybe it's a mutated rat?"

"Have they gone... gone far away?"

"The devil knows."

Seemingly afraid that the shadow would return, even though Lin Yuanran pushed him away, he still leaned closer, looking nervous.

Lin Yuanran couldn't refuse any longer. After all, he was a bodyguard, and providing psychological comfort seemed to be part of the commission.

Whoosh!

After taking only two steps, the shadow turned back. Especially after Lin Yuanran mentioned the ghostly figure, Mo Lin's horror was palpable.

“Should we…find somewhere to get out?” he asked.

Lin Yuanran said, "Aren't you going to look for your cheese?"

"I think my life is more important."

"Suit yourself, but we're lost."

"seems like it."

Lin Yuanran sighed. He seemed to have encountered this situation before, but back then he was with Feng Ling. Even in the darkness, it didn't matter; she would handle it.

Moreover, she could talk to ease the tension, even if it was sarcastic remarks, it was still far better than the coward in front of her.

"No need to look anymore, we're in trouble," Lin Yuanran said.

Molin then looked around and saw countless green ghost eyes appearing, some near and some far, besides the firelight surrounding him and the boy.

Like will-o'-the-wisps in the wilderness, they were terrifying.

"You...you must protect me!" Mo Lin moved even closer, almost pressed against Lin Yuanran, and it was clear that he was really scared.

Lin Yuanran is no longer the small-town boy he was a few months ago. He has divine abilities and has seen his teachers and classmates fight, so it shouldn't be too difficult for him.

The fireball spell was ready, and the Great Flame Dragon was also prepared.

Before those pupils could find him, he made his move.

The owners of those pupils were really just a bunch of rats, and soon the small space was filled with the smell of burning.

It doesn't smell like meat, it smells like stench. Rats always smell bad.

But some people think differently.

Cats are a natural predator of mice, so they probably don't know what it feels like to have something unpalatable.

A big cat is gnawing on a burnt mouse.

It was nearly two meters long, with an extra eye on its forehead that gleamed fiercely. It kept watching the two humans as it ate, displaying extreme vigilance.

“That, that’s my cheese,” Maureen said blankly.

"It has mutated."
