Chapter 82 Preparations before the Wedding

When we returned to the Xu residence, Li Bai was still sober. I was worried that he would be looked down upon by the Xu family because of his drunkenness. Every morning when he went out, I would look out from the gate from time to time, hoping that I could be by his side when he got home.

As soon as I saw his horse arrive at the door, I ran out and helped Li Bai down from the carriage. Seeing that he was drunk, I quickly helped him into the house, but he insisted on going to the study.

"Young Master, you're drunk. Go back to your room and rest. Don't let the Xu family laugh at you."

"I got drunk today and bumped into Chief Secretary Li on my way home. I need to write an article to apologize to him. Yuehua, get me paper, pen, and ink."

I helped Li Bai to his desk in the study, sat him down, and placed paper, brush, and ink in front of him.

Li Bai picked up his pen and, with flowing strokes, completed "A Letter to Prefect Li of Anzhou" in one go. He placed the letter on his desk, leaned back in his chair, and fell asleep.

Xu Ziyan entered the study and was heartbroken to see Li Bai leaning against a chair, fully clothed. She went back to her room to fetch a thin quilt to cover him, then pulled up a chair and sat down beside him, carefully reading "Letter to Prefect Li of Anzhou." After finishing, Xu Ziyan sighed deeply, thinking to herself: If the Xu family were still as glorious as when my grandfather was alive, how could we not be able to help my husband?

When the eldest uncle's son returned home, he mentioned that Li Bai had offended Li Changshi. They all believed that Li Bai had caused a great disaster and would bring trouble to their family, so they told their sons to have less contact with Li Bai.

Without his drinking companions, Li Bai had some free time. He would occasionally visit the Taoist temple to discuss scriptures and Taoism with Master Ziyang, or go to the construction site to plan things out.

Time flies, and the Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner. Three days in advance, the Xu residence is already decorated with lanterns and colorful decorations, creating a joyous atmosphere, with the character "囍" (double happiness) pasted everywhere.

On this day, Master Xu approached Li Bai and said, "My dear son-in-law, although your wedding is not extravagant, and you have only invited some close relatives and neighbors, my wife and I only have this one daughter, and we still want to send her off in a grand sedan chair carried by eight men."

"Father, I don't know much about wedding ceremonies, and what I've read in books is limited. Just do whatever you think is appropriate," Li Bai said.

"Master, I have an idea. How about this? A grand sedan chair carried by eight men, with the full ceremonial procession. The young mistress and young master can set off from the Xu residence, go to Bai Zhaoshan's new home for their wedding ceremony, and then return."

Li Bai quickly said, "That's a good idea. Let Master Ziyang and the others wait for us at Baizhao Mountain."

After pondering for a moment, Master Xu also thought it was a good idea and immediately agreed.

"I immediately told Lao Wu to make some simple preparations on Baizhao Mountain, like setting up a terrace and making it a bit festive."

"Master, I'll go and deliver a message to Steward Wu, and also give him some further advice," I said.

"That's excellent. Then go and begin preparations."

"Alright, sir, young master, I'm off to Bai Zhao Mountain."

"Yuehua, don't forget to invite Master Ziyang and the others," Li Bai said.

"I won't forget, young master, don't worry."

After leaving the Xu residence, I mounted my horse and galloped towards Baizhao Mountain. When I arrived at the foot of the mountain, I didn't rush to find Steward Wu, but instead went to the Taoist temple along the stone path.

When I entered the Taoist temple, Master Ziyang and the others were meditating. Upon seeing me, they all stood up and asked:

"Yuehua, why aren't you busy at the Xu residence? What are you doing up the mountain?"

"I have something to discuss with you all." I explained Master Xu's intentions and my suggestions, and everyone agreed.

"On their wedding day, Master Ziyang, you should wait for them at the foot of this mountain."

"Okay, then who will preside over the wedding ceremony?" Cen Xun asked.

"There's a dedicated emcee. We originally planned to ask Master Ziyang for help, but considering the old Taoist priest wasn't familiar with the process, we found a professional one."

"That's good. We can just watch from the sidelines," said Master Ziyang.

"Mr. Meng is going to the Xu residence on the first day, because you are the matchmaker and have to go with the bridal sedan chair," I said.

"I've been married before, so I know a little bit. I'll be there promptly tomorrow afternoon."

"Thank you all on behalf of the young master. I'll get back to work now."

"Yuehua, don't you need us to help in front of the new house?" Yuan Danqiu and Cen Xun asked.

"No need. If you go, I'm afraid Steward Wu might hold a grudge and it could cause an unpleasant situation. You just need to go down early on the morning of the 15th and wait there."

"Okay, I'll do as you say. Go ahead."

After I finished speaking, I turned around and saw Xuanmeng looking at me with some disappointment. I walked over and said, "Xuanmeng, you should come with your senior brothers too. Go up the mountain and pick some fresh roses to give to the bride."

"Okay, I'll go pick them now." Xuanmeng said, heading towards the mountains.

"Fool, you have to pick them on the morning of the fifteenth to get them fresh."

"Oh, I've got it."

I bid farewell to Master Ziyang and the others, and went to the new house under construction to find Steward Wu. I told him what Master Xu wanted, and he immediately organized people to set up a stage and tidy up the site. As it was getting dark, the whole scene looked to be taking shape, and only decoration was needed.

"Uncle Wu, let's stop here for today. Tomorrow, we'll bring some decorations from home, along with a few pieces of red cloth, and that'll be it," I said.

"Yuehua, how did you come up with this idea? I've never seen a wedding like this before. It's so interesting!"

"Uncle Wu, this doesn't violate any ancestral rules, does it?"

"No, it doesn't count. Young Master Li should have held the wedding ceremony at the Li family home when he married Miss. This can be considered a marriage ceremony held at the Li family home," said Steward Wu.

I secretly breathed a sigh of relief. As long as Steward Wu thought so, no one in the Xu family would say anything more.

As darkness fell, Steward Wu and I rode our horses back to our home in Da'an Mountain.

As soon as Steward Wu returned, he went to the master's room. When Li Bai saw me enter the mansion, he called me to the study.

"Yuehua, how are the preparations going?"

"Everything is ready. We'll bring some festive items to decorate tomorrow, and then it'll be fine the day after tomorrow."

"Your idea is brilliant! That's my home. I should have my wedding ceremony there. Now my wish has come true!" Li Bai said happily.

"Young Master, I wonder if they received the letters you wrote to Prefect Meng, the Longxi Academy, and Rencheng in Shandong?"

Li Bai stood up from his seat, walked to the window, and said with a melancholy look in his eyes, "Even if I receive it, Prefect Meng can't come; the time is too short. My relatives in Longxi Courtyard and Rencheng probably already know I'm getting married on the fifteenth, and they will bless me."

As Li Bai and I were talking, Xu Ziyan walked in.

"Are you two talking about my cousin in Yangzhou? It will take them several days to get here, so they won't make it to our wedding. If I have the chance to meet my uncle's family, I must thank them properly; they are the ones who made my husband and I's happy."

Li Bai walked to Xu Ziyan's side, took her hand, and said, "I am also very grateful to the Meng family. Without their discerning eye, I might still be wandering in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and I would never have come to this Yunmeng Marsh, much less have met you, so secluded in your boudoir."

"This is your destiny, ordained by heaven. Even though you are separated by thousands of miles, it has brought you together." Madam Xu said as she walked into the study.

I quickly stepped forward and said, "Hello, Madam." I reached out and helped her sit down.

Li Bai and Xu Ziyan called out simultaneously, "Mother!"
