I served as Li Bai's page.

Chapter 56 Quiet Night Thoughts

The next day, before I could even leave the house, Prefect Meng arrived in a carriage with a doctor.

As soon as Meng Shaofu entered, he led the doctor upstairs to Li Bai's room, saying as they walked, "We were drinking together just a few days ago, how come he's sick today?"

They arrived at Li Bai's room. I helped Li Bai sit up and lean against the headboard. The doctor came over, took Li Bai's pulse, asked about his illness, and reassured him, "It's nothing, just a cold. A few doses of medicine to dispel the cold will do the trick."

After the doctor wrote out the prescription, I went with him to get the medicine.

Meng Shaofu said, "Take my carriage and come back quickly. I'll stay here and chat with Brother Taibai."

When I finished brewing the medicine and brought it into Li Bai's room, Meng Shaofu stood up and said, "Yuehua, take good care of your young master. If you encounter any difficulties, let me know. I'm going back to the yamen. Brother Taibai, please take good care of yourself."

"Brother Meng, I'm sorry to have troubled you," Li Bai said to Meng Shaofu, forcing himself to sit up.

"Thank you, Young Master Meng. Don't worry, I will take good care of my young master." After seeing Young Master Meng off to his carriage, I returned to Li Bai's room.

Li Bai drank the medicine prescribed by the doctor and felt better; his chills subsided, but he was too weak to stay in bed. That evening, I heard Mu Mu calling for her grandparents from downstairs. Looking down from upstairs, I saw Meng Shaofu accompanying the two elderly people into the inn.

Ah Chao and Qing Lan stepped forward and called out, "Mom and Dad are back!"

The two elderly people stepped past A-Chao and Qing-Lan and hugged Mu-Mu tightly: "Our dear granddaughter, we missed you so much!" The family chatted and laughed, enjoying a happy time together.

Li Bai, lying in bed, heard A-Chao's family laughing and asked me, "Yuehua, is something wrong downstairs?"

"Ah Chao's parents are back, and they were overjoyed to see Mu Mu."

Before I could finish speaking, Meng Shaofu walked in and asked, "Brother Taibai, are you feeling better?"

"I feel much better, thank you, Brother Meng." Li Bai sat up from the bed, wanting to get up and talk to Meng Shaofu. He had just stood up by the bed when his legs gave way and he sat down again. I quickly reached out to support him.

"Brother Taibai, there's no need for me to get out of bed. I'll sit for a while and then leave. I'll come see you again tomorrow. I'm here today to bring my aunt and uncle back," said Meng Shaofu.

"You're so busy, you don't need to come tomorrow. I feel much better after taking the medicine. I should be fine after a few more doses," Li Bai said.

Meng Shaofu was in Li Bai's room, talking to Li Bai, when Mu Mu came up with her grandparents.

The two elders asked, "Young Master Li, are you feeling better?"

"Thank you for your concern, I'm much better now," Li Bai said, grabbing my hand and struggling to stand up.

The two elderly men came over and helped Li Bai sit on the bed: "Young Master Li, there's no need for such formalities. Resting is the most important thing. Take care of yourself while you're away, so your family won't worry."

"You two are right. I haven't taken good care of my health," Li Bai said.

After chatting for a while, Mu Mu pestered her grandparents to go downstairs, and Meng Shaofu, seeing that it was getting late, also went home.

I helped Li Bai lie down, then went to the kitchen to brew a bowl of medicine for him to drink. After drinking the medicine, Li Bai turned over and fell asleep.

I sat down at the table and took out Li Bai's poems to copy them carefully. It was the time of the full moon, and a round moon hung quietly in the sky. Its cold light made me feel sleepy, and I fell asleep on the table.

"The bright moonlight shines before my bed, I wonder if it is frost on the ground. I raise my head to gaze at the bright moon, I lower my head and think of my hometown." A mournful recitation startled me awake. I looked up and saw Li Bai standing quietly by the window, gazing at the full moon hanging high in the night sky, his eyes filled with tears, softly reciting these lines of poetry.

"Young Master," I called softly.

"Yuehua, let's go home. I miss home."

"Okay, once you're better, we'll go back home and never come out again," I said.

I stood up, walked to Li Bai's side, and reached out to support him. Two cold tears fell onto my hand. My own tears welled up immediately. At this moment, in this scene, only this poem could express Li Bai's helplessness and longing.

"Young Master, don't think about it anymore. Let me help you to bed. I'll keep you company and talk to you." I couldn't bear to see Li Bai so heartbroken.

"No need, you go and rest, I'm fine." Li Bai pushed my hand away, walked to the table, sat down, picked up his pen, and wrote down this poem, "Thoughts on a Quiet Night".

After some time, Li Bai's illness gradually healed, and his friends were busy inviting him to travel and drink. By this time, Li Bai had become much more restrained and no longer indulged in drinking. When he went out with his friends, he mainly focused on sightseeing.

Time flies. It was the eve of the Lunar New Year. There were far fewer pedestrians on the main street outside the South Gate than usual. Li Bai and I were invited by Prefect Meng to have a family reunion at the Meng residence.

We arrived at the Meng residence, where the entire place was already filled with the festive atmosphere of the New Year. As soon as we entered, the parents of the young master Meng came out to greet us: "Young Master Li has arrived! Welcome, welcome!"

"Master Meng, Madam, my young master and I wish to extend our early New Year's greetings! May you have a happy new year and enjoy good health and longevity!" I walked up to Li Bai, knelt down on both knees, and kowtowed three times to Master Meng and Madam Meng. Seeing me kneel, Li Bai also tried to kneel, but Madam Meng quickly helped him up, saying, "Young Master Li, there's no need. You've just recovered from a serious illness; there's no need for such a grand ceremony. Your page can do it for you."

Then she turned around, helped me up, and said, "Get up. Look how eloquent this little mouth is. No wonder he's Li Bai's page." After the old lady finished speaking, she took Li Bai's hand and walked towards the inner courtyard. I followed behind Li Bai and we entered the inner courtyard together.

When Meng Shaofu heard that Li Bai had arrived, he came out of his study to greet him. They chatted for a while in the inner courtyard hall, and then Li Bai followed Meng Shaofu to the study.

After Meng Shaofu and Li Bai left, the old lady took my hand and said, "Come, little Yuehua, accompany me for a walk in the garden."

"Yes, madam," I replied loudly.

I stepped forward and happily helped the old lady up as she walked toward the garden.

The garden is not large, but it is arranged in a neat and orderly manner. Several wintersweet trees are in full bloom, and as soon as you enter, you can smell the fragrance of flowers throughout the garden.

"Little Yuehua, come here, let me ask you, has your young master gotten married?" the old lady asked, pulling my hand.

"Not yet, Madam. Could you introduce a suitable one to my young master?" I said, kneeling down in front of the old lady with a thud.

Madam Meng reached out and helped me up, saying, "Child, get up. It's rare to see such loyalty to your young master. I do have a suitable candidate here. Now that we know Young Master Li is unmarried, things will be much easier."

"Thank you, Madam." I was so excited that I was about to kneel again, but the old lady grasped my hand and said, "First, talk to your young master and see if he has any thoughts about getting married. Then we can discuss the rest, okay?"

"My young master is thinking about getting married. You should tell him today, and he will agree," I said urgently, afraid of any complications.

"Child, you're such an impatient person. I'm also someone who can't keep things to myself. Let's get this done after we have our New Year's Eve dinner," the old lady said.

"Alright, Yuehua thanks you again, Madam." I said, bowing to the old lady.
