Chapter 22 Li Bai's Calligraphy
I sat by the bed, watching Li Bai sleeping soundly. A wave of fatigue washed over me, so I lay down and fell asleep beside Li Bai's bed.
"Yuehua, pour me a glass of water." I vaguely heard Li Bai calling me.
I sat up straight and touched Li Bai's hand: "Young Master, was that you calling me?"
"Pour me a glass of water," Li Bai said.
I quickly got up, poured Li Bai a glass of warm water, and helped him drink it.
"Moonlight, what time is it? Have I been asleep for a long time?" Li Bai asked.
"It's already past midnight. Are you drunk and don't remember anything?" I asked. "You came back from Qingcheng Mountain, rested for a while, and then went drinking. Miss Panpan even brought you back."
"Did Panpan come to the winery to sing again? I don't remember at all!"
"This time it wasn't at the wine shop; you ran off to the banks of Huanhua Creek. Miss Panpan found you lying there drunk and brought you back."
"How could this happen?" Li Bai sat up and tried to get out of bed, but I quickly helped him up.
"Young Master, you can't keep doing this. You went off to drink without saying a word. Young Master Wu and I searched everywhere for you. I was so worried. I thought you didn't want me anymore," I said, feeling wronged, tears streaming down my face.
Li Bai reached out and gently wiped away my tears: "Don't act like a little girl and cry. We're men, we have to be strong. Don't cry anymore. How could I abandon you? From now on, you'll follow me wherever I go. We're best brothers." I was moved to tears again.
"Then you won't leave me alone again, okay? You promise."
"Alright, I swear I'll never abandon Yuehua again." Li Bai finished speaking, then took my hand: "Come on, it's late. Let's squeeze in together tonight."
Startled, I quickly let go of his hand: "Forget it, I'm used to sleeping alone. Are you alright? I'm going back to my room." With that, I turned and walked towards the door. I heard Li Bai say behind me, "So many problems."
Back in my room, thinking of Li Bai's promise, I slept soundly all night.
I was woken up by Wu Zhinan around noon the next day. I went to Li Bai's room and heard the sound of reading again, and my heart finally settled down.
"Young Master, let's go eat. I'm starving," I said.
"Alright, let's go, let's call Young Master Wu along," Li Bai said.
The three of us left the inn and went to a small restaurant across the street. We had just sat down when the owner came over and said, "Isn't this Li Bai? I've heard you write well, and your calligraphy is beautiful too. Could you write the restaurant's name for me?"
"Sure, where shall I write it?" Li Bai readily agreed.
"Write it on that blank signboard at the entrance of the shop." The restaurant owner hurriedly went to get a brush and ink, and Li Bai, with a flourish of his brush, wrote the three characters "Delicious Taste" on the signboard. The restaurant owner was overjoyed.
Li Bai's inscription attracted a crowd of onlookers in the alley. Some of them even stopped by the small restaurant for a meal, making the restaurant incredibly popular. The owner was overjoyed and kept saying to Li Bai, "Thank you! Your meal is on the house today."
I was secretly pleased to hear that the meal was free, since neither the restaurant owner nor we would lose out. But Young Master Li and Young Master Wu didn't see it that way and insisted on paying for the meal. I had no choice but to comply.
After we finished eating and returned to the inn, Li Bai finally calmed down and asked Wu Zhinan, "Have you gone to Lord Li's place to inquire about anything these past few days?"
"I've been there. I've been to the Governor's Office these past two days to inquire, and they said Lord Li went out for disaster relief and hasn't returned. Yesterday, when I was looking for you, I ran into Wang Yu on the street and saw him in his official robes patrolling with the yamen runners. I'm afraid our situation is a bit precarious," Wu Zhinan replied.
"Let's wait a little longer. Submitting a memorial to the court will also take time." After saying this, Li Bai stood up and silently gazed out the window.
The room fell silent for a moment. Wu Zhinan lowered his head and counted on his fingers. Li Bai stood by the window. I looked at Li Bai's back and suddenly felt that the carefree, confident, and decisive youth of Qingcheng Mountain was gone.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. I got up and opened it. The innkeeper stood in the doorway and said, "Li Bai, there are several guests downstairs who want you to write some calligraphy for them. I didn't let them come up. If you'd like, go downstairs and write!"
Without saying a word, Li Bai followed the innkeeper downstairs, and Wu Zhinan and I had no choice but to follow.
When the people in the hall saw Li Bai come down, they all bowed and greeted him: "Young Master Li, we would like to ask you to write a few pieces of calligraphy for us to hang in our hall."
"No problem, just bring out whatever you want to write!" Li Bai said as he walked to the table, where the innkeeper had already prepared the writing materials.
The guests took out the silk paper they had brought and placed it on the table. Li Bai carefully wrote on each piece as requested, reminding everyone, "Don't touch it yet; you can take it away after the ink dries."
Seeing so many of Li Bai's calligraphy works suddenly reminded me of the old man at the alley entrance who frames calligraphy and paintings.
"You can take your calligraphy and paintings to that calligraphy and painting shop at the alley entrance to get them framed. It will make them look beautiful and preserve them for a long time," I said loudly.
"Young man, that's a great idea. I'll take it to get framed later." One person spoke up, and everyone agreed.
After Li Bai finished writing, the guests bowed to express their gratitude. Li Bai returned the bow, saying, "It was nothing, just a small favor."
The news that Li Bai would write calligraphy for people without charging them spread like wildfire, and more and more people came to his door seeking his calligraphy. Li Bai, Wu Zhinan, and I were all busy and happy every day.
That day, the old man who owned the calligraphy and painting shop at the alley entrance approached me: "Young man, I'd like to invite you to a meal, is that alright?"
"Grandpa, why did you invite us?"
"You've helped me a lot. My shop has always had bad business, and it's hard to support my family. Ever since Li Bai started writing calligraphy, business has been booming every day, and the waiting list for picking up his paintings and calligraphy is two months in advance."
"Really? Congratulations on such good business! No need to treat us to a meal; it's the guests' choice, it's not our business."
"Young man, I know you recommended him."
"Grandpa, I just said it offhand."
"Yuehua, what are you saying to the old man?" Li Bai asked.
"Young master, the old man wants to invite us to dinner. He said we've helped him a lot," I replied.
"Great! It's almost noon, let's go eat together!" Li Bai and Wu Zhinan said as they packed their things.
The old man was overjoyed to hear this and quickly said, "Come on, let's go to my house. My wife has already prepared everything, that's why she asked me to come and invite you."
"Old man, please lead the way!"
We followed the old man to the calligraphy and painting shop. Li Bai looked around and offered some suggestions to the old man before going to the back room. The old man, hearing that Li Bai loved to drink, brought out his treasured vintage wine and drank with Li Bai and the others. It had been several days since I'd seen Li Bai drink so happily, and I didn't stop him at all, yet he didn't get drunk. When we were leaving after the meal, Li Bai asked me to secretly slip a silver ingot into the old man's pocket.
