I served as Li Bai's page.
Chapter 146 Arrival in Rencheng
After traveling and stopping frequently, it took several days to reach Rencheng. Rencheng was a place Li Bai had visited in his youth. Therefore, Li Bai led his caravan straight to the east gate of Rencheng. Li Bai's father owned a house in the east gate area of Rencheng, and most of Li Bai's uncles also lived in this area.
As our caravan entered the East Gate, Li Bai alighted from his carriage and led the caravan into a narrow alley. They hadn't gone far when an old man recognized Li Bai and exclaimed, "Isn't this Li Twelve? It's been over twenty years, and you've even grown a beard!"
Li Bai politely replied, "Hello, sir."
When the neighbors heard that Li Twelve had returned, they all stood in front of their doors to watch. Li Bai's relatives came out of their houses one after another, and his brothers and sisters from the same clan surrounded him, asking him all sorts of questions.
Uncle Liu urged, "Yuehua, ask your young master where to unload the goods. We'll do our work, he can talk his nonsense."
"Uncle Liu, wait a moment, I'll ask right away."
I walked to Uncle Liu's carriage and helped Xu Ziyan and the two children down. Li Bai's relatives immediately gathered around. Li Bai took Xu Ziyan and the two children's hands, introduced them to his relatives, and then pointed to me, saying, "This is my page, Yuehua."
I bowed to everyone as a greeting. Just then, a young woman came from a distance, helping an elderly woman. Li Bai saw this and quickly pulled Xu Ziyan and the child to kneel down. I also knelt down. Li Bai called out, "Sixth Aunt, Twelfth greets you."
"Get up, everyone get up. Is this my Twelve? It's been over twenty years, and he's finally home. Let Auntie take a good look at him." As she spoke, she took Li Bai's hands and looked him up and down, left and right. She then pulled Xu Ziyan and the child over to look at them carefully, tears streaming down her face as she looked.
Li Bai wiped away his aunt's tears and said, "I'm back, I'm not leaving again."
I tugged at Li Bai's sleeve and whispered, "Uncle Liu, we still have a long way to go. Where should we put our things?"
Aunt Liu heard this and shouted, "Fifteen, quickly go and get your brother's house key, and move your things inside!"
Li Shiwu ran back into the house to get the keys and led us to the end of the alley under a tall, umbrella-like banyan tree. Behind the tree stood a seemingly ordinary house. A wall nearly two people high enclosed a large double-leaf gate in the center, above which hung a plaque that read "Li Residence." Li Shiwu opened the gate and handed the keys to Li Bai, saying, "Brother, these keys are for you. Uncle won't be back for a while."
I led Pingyang and Boqin through the gate, which led to a spacious courtyard with a pavilion in the center. The pavilion had upturned eaves and a wooden table with four chairs. Flower beds were built on three sides of the pavilion. Flower beds were also built around the courtyard, planted with roses, other rose bushes, and some unidentified flowers and plants. It was springtime, and the courtyard was filled with the scent of spring.
Pingyang exclaimed happily, "What a beautiful courtyard!"
I said, "This will be our home from now on."
I stood in the courtyard and looked around. To the southwest was a well, more than a foot above the ground, surrounded by stone slabs and enclosed by a waist-high stone railing. A ditch connected the well, through which the water flowed slowly towards the outside of the courtyard wall. I thought excitedly, "Could there be a fountain here?"
"Yuehua, don't just stand there, open the door quickly, let's bring our things in," Uncle Liu said.
"Right away." I replied, took the key from Li Bai, walked up the steps, and opened the main door of the house. There were four large rooms in this row, with three side rooms on each side.
Li Bai said, "Move the books to the right wing room, and put the rest of the things in the main room for now. We'll pack them up slowly."
Sixth Aunt said, "Twelfth, you all go ahead with your work, come over for dinner later."
"Okay, Aunt Liu, you can go back now. I'll come over when I'm done with my work," Li Bai said.
Aunt Liu turned to the young men beside her and said, "You guys help Twelve tidy up, I'm going back now."
"Okay, Mother, take it easy." Sixth Aunt walked out of the Li residence with the help of the young girl.
After unloading the goods, Uncle Liu rushed back to Qizhou without even having lunch. After taking the money, he led his convoy and hurriedly drove towards Qizhou.
With the help of Li Bai's brothers, we roughly sorted and put away the things we had moved in, and all of Li Bai's books were placed on the bookshelves in the study in the right wing.
Seeing that the packing was almost complete, Li Bai said to his brothers, "Let's go home for dinner. Yuehua can pack the rest this afternoon."
We followed Li Bai's brothers to the house of Li Bai's sixth uncle. Li Bai's sixth uncle's house was in the middle of the alley. From the outside, it looked much more impressive than Li Bai's house. There was a pair of stone lions in front of the gate, and the words "Li Mansion" were hung high on the double red-lacquered gate. We walked through the gate. The layout of the courtyard was similar to that of Li Bai's house, but it was much more spacious, with a corridor that circled the courtyard.
When they saw us arrive, Aunt Liu came out to greet us:
"Twelve, Ziyan, come inside and sit down. Your sixth uncle will be back from the yamen soon. I asked Fifteen to inform him."
"Sixth Aunt, don't worry, we're not leaving anyway, there will be plenty of time to see Sixth Uncle later," Li Bai said.
Aunt Liu said, "It's been over twenty years since we last met. Your sixth uncle misses you very much. You are a rare talent in the Li family, and the pride of the Li family."
"Sixth Aunt, you overestimate me. I've accomplished nothing so far. I'm sorry to you all," Li Bai said.
"You can't say that. You're already a famous poet. Your poems and lyrics are beyond the reach of many. Fame doesn't necessarily come from becoming an official," Aunt Liu said.
Xu Ziyan said, "Thank you for your encouragement, Sixth Aunt. My husband will work even harder."
"My niece-in-law is so good with words, I like her." Aunt Liu looked at Xu Ziyan with satisfaction once again.
"Twelve, where is Twelve?" Just as everyone was chatting in the living room, several shouts came from the courtyard.
Li Bai ran out and hugged the person who came, saying, "Sixth Uncle, I missed you so much!"
Uncle Liu pushed Li Bai away, looked him up and down, and said, "It really is my Twelfth Prince. He's grown a beard and has become a man." After saying that, he hugged Li Bai tightly and burst into tears.
Li Bai led his sixth uncle back to the living room. Li Bai asked his sixth uncle to sit down, and then, together with Xu Ziyan, the two children, and me, we knelt down before his sixth uncle and kowtowed three times. After that, Li Bai introduced everyone to his sixth uncle.
Sixth Uncle looked at Xu Ziyan, nodded in satisfaction, and said, "You may all get up. Ziyan, you haven't met your parents-in-law yet, have you?"
"No, Ziyan is sorry for them, I couldn't fulfill my filial duty to them," Xu Ziyan said.
"It's not your fault. We twelve have loved to travel since we were young, and it's been hard on you taking care of the family. It's good that you're here. Here, he has many sisters, and everyone can help each other," said Uncle Six.
"Thank you, Uncle Liu, Aunt Liu, and brothers and sisters." After saying this, Xu Ziyan gave everyone a deep bow.
At this moment, Li Shiwu came into the living room and called out, "Dad, Mom, Brother, dinner's ready."
Sixth Uncle led Li Bai, and Sixth Aunt led Xu Ziyan to the restaurant, where everyone sat down around a large round table. After several jars of wine were finished, Li Bai, his Sixth Uncle, and his brothers were all drunk.
"Yuehua, help the Twelfth Young Master to the guest room to rest," said Sixth Aunt.
"Madam, I'll help the young master home to rest so I can tidy up the house," I said.
"Alright, drive carefully then."
"It's alright." After saying that, Xu Ziyan and I, along with the child and Li Bai, said goodbye to Aunt Liu's family and returned home.
