Chapter 141 Leisurely Life at Bai Zhaoshan

After preparing the meal, Zhang Ma came to the hall and called out, "Master and Madam, dinner is ready."

Li Bai stood up and led everyone to the dining room. After everyone sat down around the table, Wu Ma said, "From now on, we won't call him 'son-in-law,' we'll call him 'master,' and we won't call the young lady 'young lady,' we'll call her 'madam,' because we have a young lady and a young master." Wu Ma pulled Pingyang and Boqin over and said, "These are our young lady and young master."

Everyone answered in unison: "Yes."

Li Bai said, "You can call me whatever you want."

Aunt Wu said, "These are the rules. A country has its laws, and a family has its rules."

"Alright, let's call them as Aunt Wu said. Everyone, raise your glasses and let's wish Wu Chao and Xiao Qian a long and happy life together. Of course, my blessing is a little late, but it's absolutely sincere," Li Bai said.

Wu Chao and Xiaoqian stood up and said, "Thank you, sir, thank you everyone. We will definitely live a good life."

After dinner, Li Bai got drunk, and Xu Ziyan helped him back to his room. Pingyang and Boqin insisted that I take them out to play, so I led them towards the Taoist temple on the mountain.

Pingyang said, "Uncle Yuehua, are you going to see Master Xuanzhen? He has already returned to Suizhou. He came to our house for lunch before he left."

"When did this happen?" I asked.

"I don't know, it's been a long time," Pingyang said.

"Has another Taoist priest come up the mountain?" I asked Pingyang.

"Mother said the original one has come back. His name is Xuanmeng, and he often comes to our house for meals."

We chatted as we walked, and we reached the top of the mountain. Xuanmeng was sitting on the platform in front of the Taoist temple, gazing into the distance.

"Xuanmeng," I called softly.

Xuanmeng turned around, saw it was me, and excitedly said, "Yuehua, you're back! I'm back too!"

"Didn't you want to travel around? Why did you come back here?" I said.

"Everyone needs a fixed place to live. Didn't you say that Senior Brother Yuan has a residence in Yingyang Mountain? I also have a residence in Baizhao Mountain. Come, let me show you my newly built residence."

Only then did I look towards the Taoist temple. The temple had changed a lot. It had been renovated and was now brand new. The four characters "Bai Zhao Shan Ju" (白兆山居) were written on paper in the center of the main gate. Next to the temple, a three-story bamboo building had been constructed using bamboo from the mountains.

"Xuanmeng, is this bamboo house a copy of the Canxia Pavilion in Kuzhuyuan?" I asked.

"Yes, I'll also build a bamboo house so I can drink the morning dew from Baizhao Mountain every day. Come on, I'll show you." Xuanmeng said, leading the three of us toward the bamboo house.

We climbed to the top of the bamboo house and looked out. At dusk, Bai Zhao Mountain was shrouded in mist and clouds, the twilight deepening. Standing on the bamboo house, we could take in the surrounding scenery.

"Xuanmeng, you've built such a beautiful bamboo house. The view from here is expansive, and the air is fresh. It's truly a wonderful place for cultivation," I said.

"Senior Brother Xuanzhen and I worked together on it. After we finished, Master came to see it and praised me. Senior Brother Xuanzhen even played a bamboo flute on it; it sounded wonderful."

"Did Xuanzhen return to Suizhou or go somewhere else?"

"Master said that the immortal energy in Ziyang Cave is abundant, and he told me to go there for secluded cultivation. He probably hasn't come out of seclusion yet."

We stood on the bamboo house for a while, then came downstairs. I took Pingyang and Boqin to the Taoist temple to offer incense. It was getting darker and darker. I said to Xuanmeng:

"I'll ask my young master to write a plaque for your Baibei Mountain Residence another day, and then we'll paste two couplets on the door. Your place will then be a paradise on earth."

"Thank you, Hermit Taibai. I will definitely cultivate diligently here and comprehend the path to immortality as soon as possible," Xuanmeng said.

I smiled at Xuanmeng, thinking to myself, is becoming an immortal so easy? I said:

"You must do your best! It's getting dark, let's go back now."

I led Pingyang and Boqin down the mountain. When we got home, it was already dark. Li Bai and Xu Ziyan were standing at the gate looking out. When they saw us return, they came out to greet us.

"Did you go to the Taoist temple up there again? How is Xuanzhen?"

"Xuanzhen has returned to Suizhou, and Xuanmeng has come back, even rebuilding his bamboo house." I said to Li Bai, "When we have time sometime, let's make him a plaque for 'Baibei Mountain Residence,' write two couplets for him, and give his bamboo house a name."

Li Bai readily agreed, "Okay, it can be done tomorrow."

"It's not necessarily tomorrow; there's plenty of time later. Aren't you going to tidy up your Peach Blossom Rock tomorrow?" I said.

"Of course we should, we'll talk about it tomorrow. Come on, let's go home and get some sleep." Li Bai led Pingyang and Boqin by the hand and walked towards the inner courtyard.

Because of the fatigue from the journey, I woke up very late the next day. When I got up, Xiaoqian was making children's clothes in the yard. Seeing me get up, she said, "You're up! I'll make you something to eat."

"You stay here, I'll go by myself. What about them?" I asked.

"The master and mistress took the children to Peach Blossom Rock, Zhang Ma and Wu Ma went to the fields to pick vegetables, and Wu Chao and the others went to work in the fields."

"Be careful when you're home alone," I said.

"It's alright, I didn't do any heavy work," Xiaoqian replied.

"I'm going to the kitchen to cook noodles. Do you still want some?" I asked Xiaoqian.

"I'm not eating anymore, you eat it."

After we finished eating the noodles, Aunt Zhang and Aunt Wu came back carrying a basket of freshly picked vegetables. I said:

"I'm going to Peach Blossom Rock to find Master and Madam."

Aunt Zhang said, "Come back early for lunch."

"Okay, I'm leaving." After saying that, I walked out of the inner courtyard and headed towards the main gate, where I ran into Xuanmeng.

"Xuanmeng, you're here," I greeted.

"Yuehua, are you going out?" Xuanmeng asked.

"I'm going to Peach Blossom Rock. Come on, let's go together. My young master and the others are there."

"Okay." Xuanmeng followed me towards Peach Blossom Rock.

We took a shortcut, climbing up and down hills along the way. In winter, Peach Blossom Rock was bare, except for the evergreen pines and cypresses, the peach trees were just branches swaying in the wind, and the wild grass was withered.

We arrived at Peach Blossom Cave. The stream was still flowing gently from the cave. We climbed the steps and entered. Li Bai and Xu Ziyan were busy cleaning up the dust, while the two children were drawing on the stones by the stream. When they saw Xuanmeng and me, they excitedly called out, "Uncle, come and see if our drawings are good!"

Li Bai looked up and saw Xuan Meng; the two bowed to each other and greeted one another.

Xuanmeng and I helped Li Bai set up his reading desk. Li Bai immediately sat down at the desk and began to read the "Three Character Classic" with a swaying head, looking every bit like an old scholar.

Pingyang ran over, grabbed my hand, and said, "Uncle, come and judge for us! Boqin always scribbles randomly, and he even says he draws better than me."

Xuanmeng and I stood before the two children's drawings, unsure how to comment. Both children had drawn two adults holding two children's hands. This was clearly a family portrait of Li Bai's family, but from different angles.

"Pingyang and Boqin both painted very well; it's just that each person's position is different," I said.

Pingyang smiled proudly at Boqin and said, "I told you I was a good painter, but you wouldn't believe me. Look, even your uncle says so."

I called out to Li Bai, "Master, come and see your family portrait." I called several times, but there was no response. I walked up to him and called out, "Master."

Li Bai immediately realized what he meant and said, "Others can call me 'Master,' but you can't. You can only call me 'Young Master.' I will always be your Young Master; calling me 'Master' feels awkward."
