Inviting the Moon to the Farmhouse
Chapter 13 Drink a glass
The three of them walked together toward the Tian family's house.
As Xia Lanyue left Mr. Xia's house, she pondered a question: Mr. Xia's mother was called Tian Guang, who was her uncle. So, Mr. Xia and Tian Guang were uncle and nephew, but Tian Guang's surname was Tian, while Mr. Xia's surname was Xia! What kind of relationship was this? Xia Lanyue couldn't figure it out, but having learned her lesson earlier, she dared not pry into other people's family affairs.
"Uncle Tian, how about a drink tonight?" Xia Lanyue raised the wine jar and waved it in front of Tian Guang.
"Okay, have a drink. You can drink too?" Tian Guang asked Xia Lanyue with a smile.
"Yes," Xia Lanyue used to be able to drink men under the table, and this small jar of wine wouldn't be enough for her by herself.
“I’ll have drinks with Uncle tonight,” Dai You said.
“I want to drink too,” Xia Lanyue said.
“You can’t drink it,” Dai You said.
"Why?" Xia Lanyue glared at Dai You.
"You need to take your medicine."
"Taking medicine is taking medicine, drinking alcohol is drinking alcohol, drink both." Xia Lanyue smiled at Dai You.
"No, the doctor said I can't drink alcohol."
"Oh dear, the doctor always exaggerates the severity of my illness. He said it would take half a month for me to recover, but look at me now, I'm as lively as ever."
“But you…” Dai You looked at Xia Lanyue, but after a long while, he couldn’t say the rest of the sentence.
"But what? No buts, let's live for today," Xia Lanyue said to Tian Guang with a smile, "Right? Uncle Tian?"
"Sigh, I don't understand the language of your culture, but this wine is quite good," Tian Guang said with a smile.
“Exactly, it would be a disservice not to drink such good wine,” Xia Lanyue shook her head, angrily telling Dai You.
And so, the two of them, bickering and arguing, followed Tian Guang home.
Wang Cui had already prepared the meal and was just waiting for everyone to come back.
Upon seeing Tian Guang, the first thing he asked was, "Have you met your son-in-law?"
"I saw him."
"Did you tell them what I asked you to tell them?"
"I already said it, I already said it, you're so long-winded," Tian Guang said impatiently.
"That's good, come and eat!" Wang Cui invited everyone to eat.
Today's meal was especially lavish; Wang Cui had specially stewed a duck to nourish Xia Lanyue's body.
Xia Lanyue was flattered. She had been eating plain porridge for the past few days and hadn't had enough of the minced meat in her noodles at noon. She was just thinking about the meat when it arrived. But immediately, she felt bad. She hadn't helped the Tian family, but instead had eaten their prized duck, which made her feel very embarrassed.
"We have some good food today, how about a drink?" Uncle Tian said to Xia Lanyue with a smile.
"Uncle Tian, let me fill your glass," Xia Lanyue filled the glasses of the four people at the table, raised her glass to toast Tian Guang, "Uncle Tian, thank you for saving my life, I toast you."
Tian Guang smiled and picked up his wine glass. Xia Lanyue reached out and touched Tian Guang's glass to hers, then tilted her head back and downed the glass in one gulp.
"Hey, drink slowly, you'll get drunk," Tian Guang said, stopping Xia Lanyue from drinking too quickly.
"It's alright, it's alright," Xia Lanyue refilled her glass and raised it to Wang Cui, "This glass is for Auntie, to thank you for taking care of me."
After saying that, he also gulped it down, but this time, he savored it in his mouth before swallowing.
This wine has a low alcohol content and is slightly sweet.
Xia Lanyue poured wine for Tian Guang and Wang Cui, and then filled her own glass.
"Drink slowly," Tian Guang said, taking a sip of his drink. "How's this wine?"
Xia Lanyue didn't know how else to describe it, so she simply used the most direct evaluation: "Delicious."
Dai You glanced at her, then raised his glass to Tian Guang and Aunt Wang, saying, "To Uncle Tian and Aunt Wang," before downing it in one gulp, followed by a fit of coughing. It seemed he truly couldn't hold his liquor; how could he have dared to claim he was drinking with Tian Guang?
Xia Lanyue raised her glass, wanting to savor the wine further, but Dai You stopped her, saying, "That's enough. Doctor Zhang instructed that you cannot drink any more."
Xia Lanyue wanted to drink more; she had drunk too quickly and hadn't yet tasted the difference in the wine. But Dai You's grip was too strong, holding her glass so tightly she couldn't break free. "Finish this glass, I've already poured it all out," Xia Lanyue had no choice but to say.
"I'll drink it for you," Dai You said, snatching the wine glass from Xia Lanyue's hand, tilting his head back and drinking it down, followed by another bout of coughing.
Xia Lanyue licked her lips. It was a pity that she had only drunk two glasses of such good wine. Xia Lanyue felt a little heartbroken.
"Alright, no more drinking. Save it for next time." Wang Cui got up, picked up the wine jar, sealed it, and put it in the cabinet behind her.
"What did you do in town?" Wang Cui asked as she sat down on a stool after returning.
“We went to browse the shops, the town was really lively,” Xia Lanyue said enthusiastically.
“It can’t compare to your capital, can it?” Wang Cui continued.
"Ah... each has its own unique features, and this one is quite good too," Xia Lanyue's voice grew weaker and weaker.
Dai You turned his head and glanced at Xia Lanyue, but didn't say anything, just kept his head down and ate.
"I've heard that the capital is very prosperous, which is naturally incomparable to ours. I really want to go to the capital to see it if I have the chance. I've lived in this small field all my life and have never seen the outside world," Wang Cui said with a longing expression.
"If I have the chance to come to the capital, I will definitely treat my aunt well."
"Sigh, I'm so happy to hear you say that," Wang Cui said with a satisfied smile.
After the meal, Tian Guang and Wang Cui went back to their rooms to rest. Dai You cleaned up the table and took a bucket to the river to wash the dishes.
Xia Lanyue followed behind him to the riverbank.
Sensing someone following him, Dai You stopped and turned around. Seeing it was Xia Lanyue, he said, "You go back and rest. I'll go take a shower."
Xia Lanyue stood with her hands behind her back and didn't say anything.
Dai You assumed she had agreed and turned to walk back towards the river.
Xia Lanyue continued to follow behind him.
Dai You turned around, looked at her, and said helplessly, "Then let's go together."
When they arrived at the river, Xia Lanyue squatted down by the water and played with throwing pebbles. She tried to skip stones, but she didn't know how, and only splashed water.
Dai You quietly washed the dishes.
“You have a wound on your left wrist,” Xia Lanyue reminded Dai You.
"Yeah, it's nothing," Dai You said nonchalantly.
"It looks like a fresh wound."
"I got cut while cutting bamboo in the bamboo forest yesterday. It will be fine in a few days," Dai You said calmly.
Xia Lanyue listened and remained silent for a moment. "When do we leave here?"
"Wait until you are fully recovered."
"I'm all better now," Xia Lanyue said anxiously.
“I wasn’t talking about the cough, I was talking about this,” Dai You turned around and pointed to his head.
Xia Lanyue was stunned. He wanted to wait for her to regain her memories?! How could that be?!
"You've been living in the kitchen all this time, with all the fumes and rats, it must be so uncomfortable."
"It's alright, Miss, I'm used to this kind of life."
“But it’s not good for us to keep bothering Uncle Tian and his wife here. They’re not exactly wealthy, yet they always take care of us with food and drink. To entertain us, they even stewed the duck that they usually only eat during the New Year.” Xia Lanyue persisted.
"I understand, I will find a way to make it up to you."
"Wouldn't it be faster to compensate with money if we went back?" Xia Lanyue said.
Dai You didn't reply, and kept washing the dishes with his head down.
Seeing that he didn't speak, Xia Lanyue felt uneasy. He had been avoiding her since morning. What was Dai You thinking that he didn't want her to know? Why did she insist on regaining her memories before going back? Was it because she was afraid of being blamed for not taking good care of her when she returned?
"Don't worry, no one will blame you for neglecting your duty even if I become like this," Xia Lanyue said, afraid he wouldn't believe her. "I promise."
Dai You still insisted on his idea, "Miss, let's make a decision after you're better."
"Make a decision later?! What does that mean? What decision is needed to go home? Did something happen at home and she can't go back?! Or did she just not want to be at home and that's why she came out?" Xia Lanyue was increasingly confused.
"What happened at home?" Xia Lanyue couldn't help but ask.
Dai You shook his head, his eyes darting around, and stopped talking. He seemed somewhat troubled.
No matter what Xia Lanyue asked next, Dai You just kept his head down washing the dishes and refused to answer. Xia Lanyue was both angry and anxious. She snatched the bowl from his hand and pretended to throw it away to threaten him, "Why is that?"
Dai You reached for the bowl, but Xia Lanyue dodged it. Seeing that he wouldn't answer her question, she quickly threw the bowl into the water. Dai You tried to catch it again, but it was too far away.
Dai You didn't blame her, he just sighed and moved the bucket to the other side to prevent her from throwing another one.
Dai You didn't say another word until he finished washing the dishes.
After washing the dishes, Dai You took the bucket and headed home.
Xia Lanyue called out to him helplessly, "Then you have to tell me where your home is, right?"
"Think for yourself."
