The Path to Lordship Begins in the North
Chapter 83 Checks and Balances
The royal envoy has once again arrived in this northern border that has brought him to the brink of despair.
During the previous defeat of the allied forces, the envoy survived the shelling and subsequent battles thanks to the protection of his loyal servant.
Because he didn't raise any flags and was dressed very plainly, no one chased after him. In addition, he was a professional, although only an inconspicuous low-level professional.
So the envoy from the capital was very lucky; he not only escaped, but also returned safely to the capital.
But fate played a cruel trick on him. When Crane saw how fast the envoy could run, he simply handed over the task of appointing the governor back to the envoy who had just escaped.
The messenger, barely having warmed his chair at home, rushed back to the North.
As for Doug Lars, he naturally treated the envoy to good food and drink throughout the journey, but the envoy was not happy at all.
After all, we'll be heading to Fassen Town soon.
The town of Fason no longer exists; it was directly merged into Graycollar downstream, when Lind asked Jefferson if he was willing.
Jefferson's reply was: I have no objection.
After all, Jefferson had sworn that he would never sit on the fence again.
However, Jefferson also amassed a huge business controlling sugar and restorative potions, which made the other nobles extremely envious. But the town of Fassen disappeared from that point on.
But now there's only one voice in the entire western North, which is basically the same as the situation in Farson Town. Why isn't the head of Lars, the great lord of the Grey and White Collar, coming to compensate them?
The carriage bearing the Augustinian double-headed lion crest was only informed after entering the western part of the North that Lind was currently still in the Evans family's territory. This was not unexpected, as newly conquered territories do require some time to digest.
Along the way, the envoy saw many nobles fleeing. He stopped many nobles to inquire and found that they had all fled because they could not endure Lind Rol's harsh laws. This made the envoy shake his head repeatedly. Although the situation in Doug Lars next door was not much better, with servants and soldiers looting everywhere in his territory, there was no such situation of nobles fleeing.
But when the messenger entered the city, he discovered that production in Evans' territory had not been affected.
Not only that, but there were job postings everywhere on the street, and it seemed like there was always work to be done. People were so busy that no one noticed the luxurious carriage speeding down the street.
This seemed to be telling the messenger inside the carriage that the territory could continue to function even without the nobles.
No, it wasn't that they had left the nobles; the envoy had already seen quite a few nobles wearing strange helmets directing work.
The once proud nobles are now actually doing the work of overseeing the construction.
It seemed that it wasn't just the supervisors; those familiar faces were even rolling up their trousers and shoveling a pile of strange sand.
Among them, the messenger even saw a strangely familiar face—Sean Lars.
The current lord's brother-in-law is actually teaching nobles and commoners how to work in a place that looks like a construction site.
It's no wonder that the nobles were willing to disregard their image and mingle with a group of commoners. Even Sean Lars, the most promising heir of the Lars family and the brother of the current lord's only wife, was working with his hands covered in mud. Naturally, no one else could object.
However, the envoy familiar with the nobility soon discovered that those nobles who worked for Sean were often those who were not favored by their families or were marginalized individuals with no hope of inheriting the family business.
Before the messenger could figure out the connection, the carriage had already arrived at Lind's location.
Linde didn't really want to live in the Evans family's original mansion, because noble mansions were often full of secret passages and mechanisms, and there might be all sorts of messy rooms. So he temporarily bought a vacant house from a wealthy businessman and moved in.
"It's been a long time, Your Excellency."
Looking at Linde's professional fake smile, the messenger felt a chill run down his spine and prayed that he would never run into Linde again.
"Viscount Lind Rol, congratulations! His Majesty the King has decided that you will be the Governor of the North. This is the King's personal letter and appointment document."
Linde had already heard rumors of his appointment as governor and knew that Doug Lars had also received the same appointment. After discussion, everyone felt that it was better to accept the appointment.
This added a touch of legitimacy to Lind's rule, though it was essentially superfluous, since Lind was ruling in the name of Lars.
But no one really wanted to be a rebel, especially old nobles like Lena and Caroline, who still retained some of the feudal aristocratic loyalty to the monarch at heart.
Lucanus and Flora, on the other hand, were much more radical, even wishing that Linde would directly declare himself emperor.
Both sides are too extreme. Linde plans to build high walls, stockpile grain, and delay declaring himself king. He will swallow the sweetness and then fire back with cannons.
Linde may not need the so-called governorship, but the new nobles working under him desperately need it. So since the other party has offered a way out, Linde is willing to give them face.
However, after Linde actually read the appointment letter and Crane's handwritten letter, he had a strange feeling.
Although Linde didn't know much about the male protagonist, she felt that he wasn't the kind of person who could come up with such a strategy.
This strategy of balancing both sides while simultaneously fanning the flames feels somewhat similar to the tactics favored by a certain superpower in my past life. Furthermore, Kran even promised that Linde could purchase weapons and equipment from the capital through certain channels. This money-making model of selling off one's obsolete equipment at high prices while incidentally fanning the flames is just too similar.
If it were a more foolish nobleman, he might actually think that Crane was there to support him, and he would have drawn his sword and fought Doug Lars to the last Northerner.
The only thing that doesn't quite fit is that the capital and the North are essentially separated by only a fortress. This close proximity makes it impossible for the capital to achieve true offshore checks and balances, making it easy for it to play with fire and get itself into trouble.
That's probably why the capital only appointed two governors, in order to maintain a balance.
Linde could easily guess that the handwritten letter Doug Lars received was probably similar to his own, full of nonsense before starting to promote the capital's outdated weapons and equipment.
And if either he or Doug Lars were defeated, the king would immediately appoint one of Doug's two brothers as the new governor.
Of course, the ancients had already done similar things, so it wasn't anything new. Linde didn't think the natives were stupid enough not to think of similar methods.
But something just didn't feel right. This strange feeling lingered in Linde's mind. The opponent's fighting style was too methodical. Could it be the idea of that time traveler in the capital who replaced Isa?
Seeing Linde's furrowed brows, the envoy cautiously asked, "Your Excellency the Governor?"
Linde then came to his senses and signed the appointment letter. The messenger leaned forward to check and found that it was still the familiar "read."
