The Path to Lordship Begins in the North
Chapter 337 The First Batch of High-Level Professionals
Myron and Sidney eventually arrived in Capet's capital in a way they never expected.
At this moment, Myron was stretching his body while talking with the knights of Lars beside him.
It must be said that these heavily armored Lars Knights were quite troublesome. Not to mention their defense, they were also surprisingly agile. In addition, they had a whole bunch of random ranged items, which made Myron realize that the Lars Knights, known as the Turtle Knights, were a thing of the past.
If these knights appear one by one, Myron can still handle them with his more flexible fighting style. But if these knights swarm in like before, Myron won't gain much advantage in a head-on battle.
Sidney fared even worse. Spellcasters are not good at one-on-one combat. While Myron was entangled, the opponent grabbed Sidney and beat him up. The seemingly cumbersome armor had extraordinary mobility. In addition, the commander also had a bunch of ranged items. Sidney was not given a chance to breathe. Unable to create distance, Sidney finally chose to surrender.
"What is that huge thing? A mage tower?"
Sidney stroked his beard and looked curiously at the obelisk under construction in the center of the capital.
"That's used to power the magical equipment in the city; you can think of it as an enhanced version of a traditional mage tower."
Hearing Hammond's explanation, Sidney nodded and carefully examined the obelisk, saying, "The structure looks both simple and ingenious, and there are many areas that can be expanded upon. It is truly a masterpiece."
Upon hearing Sidney praise the obelisk, a knight named Lars retorted, "Old man, don't you understand human speech? I thought you could only understand the sounds of ray guns and melting swords."
Hammond immediately rebuked the knight, "Watch your words! He is our guest no matter what!"
Then Hammond turned to Sidney and said, "Master, please don't mind them. They're just young people, and they might not be very good at speaking. It was all a misunderstanding before, and it'll be cleared up soon."
Hearing Hammond's understanding tone, Sidney found even the muffled sound coming from Hammond's helmet to be more pleasant, though he still didn't know who had caused the bruises on Sidney's face.
Hammond had already figured it out: this high-level spellcaster preferred to be appeased; once he was coaxed, he was quite easy to talk to.
Of course, the other party was indeed a bit arrogant, but it doesn't matter. If the other party crosses the line again, Hammond will tell them the rules here, just like before.
Compared to Sidney, Myron looked around with more curiosity and asked, "Is there no longer a distinction between the inner and outer cities?"
"That's right, the inner and outer city walls are already being demolished. The governor said that building city walls in the city was a waste."
Hammond diligently acted as a guide for the two high-ranking professionals, introducing them to everything in the capital.
"No, that's not what I meant. We're in the outer city now, right? Why doesn't the outer city smell as bad as it did before?"
Although Myron is a knight and Sidney is the spellcaster, compared to the domineering Sidney, Myron seems to be the one responsible for the mental work.
"Yes, the governor went to great lengths to solve this problem."
Even though Hammond's helmet has a basic purification function, the thought of the smell in the outer city makes Hammond's helmet even give the illusion of making one frown.
The situation in the capital was very complicated. Even though Linde built public toilets, the situation did not improve. In the end, it was Lilith who led the church to take action, and the outer city area was able to get a little better from being filled with stench.
As Hammond recounted the various changes in the capital, Myron gained a general understanding, especially when he saw the old nobles still hanging on the new streetlights.
This governor of the North was a man of great courage; he wiped out most of the nobles in the capital in one fell swoop. I heard that this was only after the governor's wife pleaded for the nobles; otherwise, more than two-thirds of the nobles in the capital would have been involved.
Despite eliminating so many people, the efficiency of the capital city not only did not decrease, but actually improved significantly.
The governor's methods were quite simple and crude, but effective. In fact, because they were so simple, Myron couldn't find any fault with them.
The meeting with this secular monarch was not the flower-filled, red-carpet encounter that Myron and Sidney had imagined; instead, it took place at the other mansion, where the conversation proceeded in a very ordinary manner.
"I've already heard about your situation. Welcome back to Capet."
Sidney snorted, clearly dissatisfied with such an informal meeting, but Myron was more relaxed and casually sat down to chat with the Governor of the North.
The grand welcoming ceremony that I had envisioned was no longer important to Myron; he was more curious about what Capet had become.
After escorting the two to the mansion, Hammond left. Sensing that Hammond's presence had disappeared, Myron asked curiously, "Your Excellency, has your Knight Lars already left?"
Lind simply nodded and replied, "That's right. There are probably quite a few high-level professionals like you two who have returned from the tower, so the Lars Knights are all very busy right now."
“No, Your Excellency, what I mean is that you are easily attacked like this.”
Myron meant no harm and was genuinely trying to offer a friendly reminder, but at that moment Sidney suddenly sprang into action, a lightning-struck blade appearing in his hand, which he thrust towards Lind.
"Interesting, the Holy Light actually protects you on its own initiative."
Seeing that the lightning blade was blocked by the light barrier, Sidney wasn't embarrassed. After all, Sidney hadn't really intended to do anything to Lind in the first place, so he instead looked Lind up and down.
Although he maintained a calm demeanor, Linde admitted that he was startled. Although the old man was a spellcaster, his explosive power was in no way inferior to that of some ordinary knights. Fortunately, he had 550C to back him up, otherwise Linde would not have been so confident in meeting two high-level professionals alone.
"I'm sorry, Your Excellency, Sidney has always been like this; he never really wanted to hurt you."
Myron pulled Sidney back, and Lind waved his hand and said, "It's alright. The main reason I met with you two is to talk about high-level professionals."
Linde did not intend to directly recruit these high-level professionals who had been detached from secular society for a long time. Some of these high-level professionals could even be considered as a separate force, so cooperation was the main approach.
Linde doesn't expect these high-level professionals to serve him, but he at least wants them to remain neutral, or at least not to have too strong a bias.
After listening to Lind's request, Myron wasn't too surprised. The only surprise was that the other party's idea was so unhurried. But thinking about those Lars Knights, the other party did indeed have the right to be unhurried.
However, this was not enough for Myron.
After his encounter with the Lars Knights and his arrival in the capital, Myron had new considerations.
“Your Excellency, I have no interest in these things.”
Myron rejected the series of offers Lind had made, saying, "I want to join the Knights of Lars."
