The handsome guy next door loves to flirt.

Chapter 40 Grandma's Death Anniversary

"No need, I ate before coming. I think you should eat less in the future. You look much fatter than the last time I saw you," Yun Shu said sarcastically. Who cares about eating here? It's as if she's so pitiful that she can't even afford a meal.

"Get ready, we'll be heading to the old house soon. Yunhuan! Go change your clothes, this one won't do, it's too flashy." Gu Cheng gave Yunhuan a sharp look. This child had never gotten along with Yun Shu since they were little, and now she was putting Yun Shu down like this in front of so many people, no wonder Yun Shu was in a bad mood. In order to prevent the two children from clashing again, and seeing that Yunhuan's clothes were too bright, he figured she didn't need to dress like that to pay respects to her grandmother, and this was also a way of reminding Yunhuan to tone it down.

Yun Huan frowned and saw her mother giving her a meaningful look, so she didn't want to say another word and obediently went upstairs to her room to change her clothes.

"Yun Shu, your sister is still young, don't hold it against her," Gu Cheng said unhappily, which could be seen from his slightly furrowed brows.

Yun Shu ignored Gu Cheng's words; she was too lazy to argue with him. She walked to the side and sat down, waiting for them to finish getting ready before going directly to the old house with them.

"Yun Huan, go check if your sister has changed her clothes yet? It takes her so long to change just one outfit!" Gu Cheng was in the living room and got impatient after waiting for Yun Huan for several minutes without her coming down.

Girls are such a hassle. It's a pity he doesn't have a son; it's one of the biggest regrets of his life!

Yun Huan was called and obediently went upstairs. Within two minutes, the two of them came down. Yun Huan changed into a plain dress and tied all her hair back up into a low ponytail. The lack of overly flamboyant attire made her look more fresh and sunny.

Gu Cheng was somewhat satisfied when he saw Yun Huan at this moment, after all, Yun Huan loved her the most out of the three children.

After the family finished getting ready, they took a car to the Gu family's old residence. Yun Shu and Yun Le rode in the car behind. The Gu family's car was very ordinary and low-key, after all, they were being considerate because of Gu Cheng's status; the other families in the compound were basically the same.

Only Gu Cheng's father, Gu Jianguo, lives in the old Gu family house. Gu Jianguo has two sons and a daughter. His eldest son, Gu Cheng, is in the military, his younger son, Gu Chi, is in business, and his daughter is married and lives in another city. Because she was unhappy with the marriage arranged for her by the family, she secretly ran away and married someone else, so Gu Jianguo ordered his family not to contact her again. He even forbade her to return to pay respects on the anniversary of Grandma Yun Shu's death. In the Gu family, Gu Cheng's military rank has been steadily rising in recent years, but his younger brother, Gu Chi, hasn't been doing very well in business. For some reason, his business hasn't grown much and isn't as successful as Gu Cheng's.

The Gu family visits Gu Jianguo at the old house almost every week, but Yun Shu has been visiting less recently, though she often sends him gifts through others. Yun Shu doesn't have much affection for her grandfather. Unlike her grandmother, although Yun Shu grew up with them, Gu Cheng is very patriarchal and doesn't particularly like her, plus he wasn't initially keen on having her stay. Remembering her grandmother's dying words, Yun Shu remains very filial to her grandfather.

The old house is a bit far from this neighborhood, almost in the countryside, but the air is better there, and the old man just wants to stay there. It took Yunshu and the others an hour to get there.

The Gu family's old house was built decades ago, but because it's repaired every year, it still looks very new. Yun Shu is more familiar with this place than anyone else in the Gu family this generation. She came to the Gu family at the age of eight and lived here until she went to university, when she moved in with Gu Cheng and the others.

The old house was a traditional courtyard house with front and back yards. It was very clean and tastefully furnished. There were two servants attending to Gu Jianguo. After Gu Cheng and the others entered the inner courtyard, they went to the back yard, where Gu Jianguo was indeed drinking tea, with his servant Uncle De standing beside him.

"Dad, we're back!" Gu Cheng said respectfully as soon as he saw Gu Jianguo.

"Yes, you're back. When Achi's family arrives, offer incense to your mother!" The old man is eighty years old this year and just celebrated his birthday at the beginning of the year. Although he is quite old, he looks to be in good health and spirits. He doesn't usually have any ailments, except that he injured his foot when he was younger, which makes walking a little difficult.

Gu Cheng looked a lot like him, with a square face, tall stature, and a serious expression. Yun Shu felt that this person was quite different from Xiao Mingkun. At least Xiao Mingkun only put on an act in public, but over the years, Yun Shu hadn't noticed much change in Gu Cheng's expression; he always had a poker face, which made it hard for Li Meng not to mind.

Gu Cheng had no objection and replied, "Yes!" He then asked Yun Shu and the others to come over and greet Gu Jianguo one by one.

"Grandpa, look, my sister hasn't come to see you lately. She's so unfilial!" Gu Huan ran up to her grandfather and said with a grin.

Gu Cheng knew something was wrong when he saw Yun Huan's expression. He was about to call her back when he saw the old man's face change drastically. He shouted, "Today is your grandmother's death anniversary, and you can still smile? Li Meng, how did you raise your child! She doesn't know any manners at all!" Gu Jianguo wasn't that stupid. He found the smile on Yun Huan's face particularly irritating.

Upon hearing this, Gu Huan's eyes immediately reddened. What bad luck! For some reason, everyone was targeting her today. Feeling wronged, she dared not have any other thoughts and had no desire to pick a fight with Yun Shu. Yun Le, hearing that her sister had been scolded again, twitched her lips and thought to herself: "They don't even know when to stop. Even Mom is being dragged into this."

On the other hand, Li Meng wasn't feeling much better either. The old man had always looked down on her as his daughter-in-law, just because she hadn't given the Gu family a son. But it wasn't her fault; the country had a one-child policy, and Gu Cheng, being a soldier, couldn't have a second child, so she couldn't have one either. Come to think of it, she also wanted a son, so she wouldn't be looked down upon by the people in the compound.

"Ashu, come here!" The old man turned to look at Yun Shu, who was standing alone to one side, and his expression softened a little.

"Ever since your grandma passed away, you haven't been very willing to stay here. Oh well! You're all grown up now, and I heard you've even become a doctor. That's good. By the way, you don't need to send things over so often anymore. Just come back to see this old lady when you have some free time."

Gu Jianguo hadn't liked his quiet granddaughter before, but as his children grew older, surprisingly, this granddaughter who had grown up away from home turned out to be the most successful. His previously favored twins were spoiled and good-for-nothings, attending only a third-rate school he couldn't bring himself to mention. So, over the past year, he'd grown to value Yun Shu more and more. Gu Jianguo felt his wife had a sharp eye, judging people better than he did; she'd long said Yun Shu was a good child, and now it seemed she was right.

Yun Shu was in a daze, but when she heard Gu Jianguo call her, she immediately reacted and said, "Yes, Grandpa!" Yun Shu was surprised that her grandfather was so nice this time and cared about her. Could it be that as people get old, they also start to love this child that no one in the Gu family wanted?

After waiting for a few minutes and seeing that Gu Chi's family had not arrived, Gu Jianguo asked Yun Shu and the others to go out first, and asked Gu Cheng to stay and have tea with him.

After Yun Shu and Li Meng left, Li Meng said she wasn't feeling well and wanted to sit for a while, telling Yun Huan and the others to go and have fun on their own.

Yun Shu didn't care where they went; she was going to stay in her old house, a place she was very familiar with. She didn't want to go anywhere else, and besides, her second uncle's family should arrive soon.

After they all left, Gu Cheng poured the old man another cup of tea before asking, "Dad, is there something you need?"
