Chapter 42: A show of force
Zhao Xuanxuan, who was standing next to Ye Xinghe, suddenly stopped and looked at Ye Xinghe seriously: "Xinghe, do you remember the day of the farewell dinner, when I had an upset stomach and heard them talking in the bathroom?"
Ye Xinghe nodded to indicate that she remembered.
Zhao Xuanxuan continued, "I heard everything from beginning to end. It was all Jiang Yan who said it. Jin Shasha had no idea."
"So what?" Ye Xinghe retorted, her eyes sharply fixed on Zhao Xuanxuan. "Accomplices to evil, aiding and abetting the wicked—doesn't she do anything wrong?!"
Zhao Xuanxuan took Ye Xinghe's hand and said seriously, "So, what I mean is, Jiang Yan can't be let off either!"
Ye Xinghe leaned closer, and whispered, "I understand. The problem is that we don't have any evidence against Jiang Yan."
Zhao Xuanxuan patted her chest and said, "I'll go talk to Uncle Sun, he'll definitely believe me."
Ye Xinghe thought to herself: He can trust you, all the uncles in the police station can trust you, but what's the use? What you overheard can't be used as evidence.
"Xuanxuan, don't bother Uncle Sun. He must be very busy with this case right now. The most important thing is to get Jin Shasha to apologize and cool things down."
The two said goodbye at the school gate.
It takes more than an hour to drive from the city to Qiandao Lake. Ye Xinghe was hesitating about how to get there when a car stopped in front of her.
"Get in the car! Sister." A familiar voice came, and Ye Xinghe looked up and saw that familiar head wrapped in gauze. She smiled, opened the door and got in the car.
"Why are you here?" Ye Xinghe was surprised, but also felt a sense of relief.
"Let's talk about where we're going first. We can discuss it on the way," Hua Qingmeng said.
"Let's go to Qiandao Lake."
On the way, Hua Qingmeng asked Ye Xinghe about the trending topic. Ye Xinghe gave them a brief explanation, saying that they were going to Qiandao Lake that night to deal with this matter.
Hua Qingmeng remained silent, as if pondering a problem or making an important decision. "Lin Hao and I need to go back to the capital to handle some matters later. I'll have Gu Chuan stay with you. You can discuss any questions you have with him."
Hearing that Hua Qingmeng wouldn't accompany her, Ye Xinghe was slightly taken aback, but the look of disappointment vanished in an instant. She met Hua Qingmeng's gentle gaze, smiled, and nodded, saying, "Okay."
The airport and Qiandao Lake are in the same direction. We'll go to the airport first to drop off Hua Qingmeng and Lin Hao, and then head to Qiandao Lake.
When the two arrived, it was nearly 6 o'clock. The people arranged by Grandpa Dai were already waiting at the pier. The two got out of the car, boarded a speedboat, and arrived at the island in the middle of the lake in 10 minutes.
The person who came to greet us was a young girl named Qiao Lin. She looked like she had just come of age, with short hair, slightly dark skin, and a row of small white teeth when she smiled.
After disembarking, she led the two directly to the Moon Viewing Pavilion.
The Moon-Viewing Pavilion is the tallest building in the entire Qiandao Lake area, with five floors. It features a classic Chinese architectural style and windows on all four sides. When the weather is warm, opening all the windows offers panoramic views of the entire Qiandao Lake.
Ye Xinghe and his two companions arrived at the fifth floor, where waiters were carrying plates of delicious dishes to the table, all of which were Ye Xinghe's favorite foods.
As soon as Ye Xinghe sat down, Qiao Lin and Gu Chuan stood on either side of her.
"What are you two doing? Sit down and eat with us!" Ye Xinghe called out urgently.
Neither of them moved.
Qiao Lin leaned forward and said, "Miss Ye, it's a rule set by Grandpa Dai that we can't dine at the same table as the guests."
“Sit down and eat with us. I’m not a guest to Grandpa Dai.” Ye Xinghe pulled her to a chair, then got up and went behind Gu Chuan, pushing him to the dining table. “You too, sit down and eat with us. It’s no fun eating alone.”
The two of them stopped making excuses.
The three chatted over their meal, and learned that Qiao Lin was 24 years old and an adopted child of Grandpa Dai. He had previously worked as a SWAT officer, but injured his eye during a mission, resulting in poor eyesight and his dismissal.
Furukawa was not a talkative person and said nothing except that he was 21 years old.
The three were enjoying their meal when Qiao Lin received a phone call.
"Miss Ye, we received a call from the docks. It seems the person who was supposed to see you has arrived."
Ye Xinghe put down her chopsticks, checked the time: 6:45.
"Make up an excuse, say that the speedboat is unavailable and we have to row over."
At this moment, three people were standing on the dock: Jin Cheng, Jin Shasha, and a bodyguard. The three of them were staring at the pitch-black lake.
The dock workers told them it was too dark to drive a speedboat, and they had no choice but to row.
Jin Cheng's face was full of arrogance, and his tone was full of disdain, "I'll give you more money, and you can take us there in a speedboat."
The staff member bowed slightly and said humbly, "Sir, please understand that no amount of money can buy back a life."
Jin Cheng, hands on his hips and beer belly protruding, struck a leader's pose and said, "Then you row the boat and take us there!"
"Yes, sir. But the boat can only hold three people, so one of you will need to stay behind."
Jin Cheng was calculating in his mind. He and his daughter had to get on the ship; he wouldn't feel at ease if the bodyguards didn't go. Besides, if Ye Xinghe was alone on the other side, he could have the bodyguards hold her hostage.
So he had no choice but to bite the bullet and row across by himself.
The journey should have taken less than 10 minutes by speedboat, but because it was dark and they couldn't see the direction, coupled with their poor rowing skills, it took the three of them almost an hour to reach the shore.
When Jin Cheng got ashore, he plopped down on the ground, panting heavily. He was used to a life of luxury, never having to walk more than a few steps, and had never experienced such exhaustion.
Jin Shasha and her bodyguard were in the same boat; their arms were so sore they could barely lift them.
"Miss Ye, they have arrived at the island in the middle of the lake," Qiao Lin reminded her from the side.
Ye Xinghe walked to the window, looked at the three people still resting below, and smiled slyly: "Hurry up and turn off the elevator."
Qiao Lin nodded in understanding, "I'll take care of it right away."
The five floors of the Moon-Viewing Pavilion are equivalent to the height of an eight-story residential building. When the three of them got downstairs and heard that the elevator was broken, they were almost in tears.
Using both hands and feet, crawling and resting intermittently, they finally met Ye Xinghe at almost 8:30.
Ye Xinghe and the other two had already finished dinner and were now listening to music and enjoying tea.
Qiao Lin waved his hand, and the performers withdrew.
Ye Xinghe raised her eyes and silently gazed at Jin Cheng. On her bright and charming face, the corners of her lips curled up in a half-smile, making it impossible to fathom her true emotions.
"Mr. Jin, you are late."
Jin Cheng was so exhausted that he couldn't say a word, and his legs wouldn't obey him. The bodyguard helped him to a chair, and he drank three glasses of water before he finally recovered.
"Ye Xinghe, I'm about the same age as your father, so I'm your uncle. Today, we're just uncle and nephew talking about this. If you ever need Uncle Jin's help in the future, just let me know."
Ye Xinghe raised one corner of her mouth and sneered, "No, Mr. Jin. First of all, I don't need any uncles. Secondly, you're not worthy of trying to claim kinship with me, Ye Xinghe. I've already waited for you for an hour and a half. It seems you're not really concerned about saving your daughter."
