Chapter 10 The First Morning After the Family Division

When Chen Donghua woke up, it was already bright outside. She jumped out of bed, her first thought being to quickly make breakfast, otherwise her mother-in-law would start scolding her again.

It was only when he opened his eyes and saw his surroundings that he remembered that they had separated and lived independently the day before.

At this moment, the four of them are living in the Ruan family ancestral hall. They are very happy at the thought that they no longer have to rush to do this or that for those irrelevant people.

Chen Donghua was happily lost in thought when she touched Ruan Mumu beside her and remembered that her daughter had a high fever last night and she wondered how she was doing now.

She reached out and touched the uninjured part of her daughter's forehead. Only after finding no signs of high fever did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Afraid of waking her daughter, Chen Donghua quietly put on her straw sandals and went out of the room. She saw that her eldest son had already carried a bucket of water back and was now washing rice to prepare porridge.

This wooden bucket belongs to the ancestral hall. Yesterday, when the family was divided, the old woman insisted that she didn't want to give them anything.

Fortunately, the village chief and the clan chief were both there, so they were given four bowls and a pottery jar, and their clothes and blankets were taken away with them.

"Mom, you're up? Did my sister have a high fever again?" Ruan Xiaojun was a diligent person and had gotten up early to fetch water from the river.

Before everyone went to the river to wash their things, he had to fetch water. His younger sister was delicate and needed clean drinking water.

Upon hearing her son's question, Chen Donghua quickly replied, "Mumu hasn't had a high fever since then. It's truly thanks to your father's spirit in heaven that Mumu survived last night."

"Yes, Mother, with Father protecting us from Heaven, our family will only get better and better in the future." Ruan Xiaohai also returned carrying a bundle of firewood.

"Xiaohai, why did you go up the mountain so early this morning? Don't go out too early in the future, it's not safe." Chen Donghua's words, though slightly reproachful, were full of concern, which warmed Ruan Xiaohai's heart.

"Yes, Mother, I understand," Ruan Xiaohai replied obediently.

Chen Donghua came over to help Ruan Xiaohai take the firewood off his back, and then went to clean the house and the corridor.

Although I couldn't see anything dirty (in fact, it was hard to tell whether it was dirty or not, since it was all dirt ground), I was just used to working there.

“Mother, when I was going up the mountain just now, I passed by that house and heard that old hag cursing my second and third aunts.”

"They were all being lazy, leaving all the housework to her, an old woman. My second aunt retorted and was beaten by that old hag." Ruan Xiaohai was telling Chen Donghua what he'd seen that morning.

Upon hearing what his younger brother said, Ruan Xiaojun quickly replied, "Mother used to do all the work, but now that no one's doing it, shouldn't it be the turn of Second Aunt and Third Aunt?"

When Ruan Mumu woke up, she found herself alone in bed. Hearing the voices of several people chatting outside, she came out and asked, "Mother, eldest brother, second brother, what are you talking about?"

"Little sister, are you still dizzy? Why don't you rest in bed more?" Ruan Xiaohai asked as soon as he saw his sister come out.

Ruan Mumu replied, "I slept too much, and my back is aching."

Chen Donghua came over and checked Ruan Mumu's forehead again. She breathed a sigh of relief after not feeling any high fever.

Then she said gently, "You lost a lot of blood yesterday, so you need to rest well these next two days. Girls are more delicate, so you need to be more careful."

Ruan Mumu stretched her limbs and said, "Mom, I don't do heavy work, it's fine."

"Little sister, don't worry about getting scolded. With your big brother here, you can quit if you want."

Ruan Mumu responded with "uh-huh," looked around, and saw that apart from the dust, the place was practically destitute.

She wondered if she could move the things out of the space.

It's so frustrating to have a treasure trove while your family goes hungry!

“Master, the items in the space can be taken out, but you’ll have to figure out how to explain it yourself.”

Ruan Mumu felt the robot's voice ringing in her mind again.

"Mr. Purple Elf, do you know everything I'm thinking?" Ruan Mumu didn't dare to speak.

She just thought to herself, if she actually said it out loud, her mother and two brothers would probably think that she had been beaten to death.

"Master, I can know anything you want me to know. If you want me to hear you scolding me, I can hear you too!"

The robot's voice once again shattered Ruan Mumu's understanding; so this was what her butler was like!

I thought he had overheard everything, and that I had no private secrets left.

"Little sister, have some porridge. You only ate a little bit yesterday. Are you starving?" Ruan Xiaojun brought over a half-bowl of thick porridge and handed it to Ruan Mumu.

There are no tables here, so you have to stand and drink from your own bowl.

Ruan Mumu looked at the porridge in the bowl, which was much thicker than the one her brother had given her last night.

He quickly peered into the other people's bowls to see if they had the same porridge, and found that their bowls were filled with crystal-clear porridge with almost no grains of rice.

Ruan Mumu snatched the bowl from Chen Donghua's hand, then shoved the bowl of porridge she was holding into Chen Donghua's hands, saying, "Mom, I'm not hungry, you eat this bowl!"

Actually, Ruan Mumu wasn't hungry at all; she hadn't even finished digesting the bowl of noodles she ate!

Chen Donghua looked at Ruan Mumu suspiciously. Last night, everyone had only a few grains of rice in their porridge. Who would believe that they weren't hungry?

"Mom, I'm really not hungry. You and your brothers can share the food. Look, there's only water in your bowls," Ruan Mumu said with some heartache.

Chen Donghua didn't insist any further. Seeing that no one had touched the porridge in their bowls, she poured all the porridge from the four bowls back into the earthenware pot, stirred it well, and then redistributed the porridge.

On the first morning after the family separated, they had their first breakfast together in such a warm and cozy way.
