Seeing the light pass by the toilet area, he quickly pulled up his pants, peeked out, and looked around. Seeing no one was around, he crouched down and went to the area where the wire mesh had been broken the night before. He released the hook, quickly pried open the wire mesh, and crouched over, not forgetting to hang the hook back up to restore the wire mesh to its original state.

My heart is pounding like a drum. I used to watch those war heroes in TV dramas, blowing up airports and seizing ammunition depots with such ease, but when it comes to my own life, I get so nervous about getting something to eat! How pathetic!

"Slap!" I slapped myself hard across the face to force myself to calm down, and quickly pulled open the second barbed wire fence, followed by the third. I hastily put the barbed wire fence back in place, crouched down, and tiptoed to run quickly towards the gate to the courtyard.

To reduce the noise from running, I tied a piece of old cotton to the sole of my shoes before going to bed. I was safe once I entered the yard, since the Japanese wouldn't patrol my area!

I rushed to the gate, but the searchlight hadn't reached the toilet area yet. The gate was tightly shut; I pushed it but couldn't open it. It must have been bolted from the inside! I quickly took out my dagger and inserted it through the crack in the door, then slowly pried the bolt to the right by feel.

Soon I felt a light touch on my hand as one end of the latch fell out of the socket on the left. With a gentle push, the gate opened a crack! Suppressing my secret joy, I slipped inside, not having time to observe the situation in the yard, and carefully closed the gate and bolted it back in.

He couldn't help but feel a surge of relief. Luckily, he had seen a simple tea table made from the thick door panels of his old house when he was young and knew its structure. If it were a modern security door, he would have been completely helpless!

He had just turned around and leaned against the door to catch his breath and calm his nerves when the spotlight beam passed right by outside! Startled, he immediately held his breath and stood there, too afraid to move!

Fortunately, the light passed by quickly and didn't linger. I leaned against the door for a while to calm myself down, then breathed a long sigh of relief before finally taking a look at the small courtyard in front of me.

This is clearly a backyard used for storing miscellaneous items. In front of it is a row of tiled houses connected by a passageway a few meters wide.

The night remained dark, and after my eyes adjusted to the light, I could barely make out the outlines of things. Here, I had to be careful; if I made any noise and alerted the Japanese, all that good food would be left was a single, shiny peanut!

Having confirmed the route, he crouched low and carefully made his way through the passage to the front yard. All the rooms were dark, with no lights on. His purpose was to prepare something delicious, so finding the kitchen was paramount. Finding things was especially difficult without knowing the area, and if he accidentally wandered into the Japanese soldiers' quarters, his small frame wouldn't be able to withstand their rough handling!

Thankfully, even though my eyesight was poor, I still had my nose and ears. As soon as I got close to a house, I heard rhythmic snoring and quickly moved on to the next one. I tiptoed and crouched down, searching through more than a dozen rooms and covering most of the courtyard, finally smelling cooking oil in the last two rooms of the left wing!

This is it!

If you can't get in in advance and don't know the layout of the courtyard, it's a waste of time to search room by room!

Reaching the kitchen doorway, he fumbled around, thankfully finding it unlocked, only secured with a latch. He was incredibly grateful to the man in charge of the kitchen; if it had been locked, he would have been in real trouble! No lock-picking skills were taught in college!

He removed the latch, pushed the door open, and carefully restored the door to its original state before groping around in the kitchen.

With the door closed, the kitchen became even darker. Like a blind man groping an elephant, I groped my way forward along the wall. And wouldn't you know it, my senses were incredibly sharp despite my blindness. The dining table, chairs, and stove passed right by my hand, and I could even visualize what they looked like! It was amazing!

After a while, he found a box of matches in the pit under the stove, which thrilled him! With matches, he wouldn't have to fumble around like this anymore. At this rate, who knew when he'd find food? If the Japanese found him, he'd be a meal!

The flame from the match was small, and as long as it didn't attract the attention of the Japanese soldiers on the watchtower outside, there was no need to worry about being exposed! Sure enough, as soon as a match was lit, the room immediately became bright, and by the light, they quickly discovered the large bamboo basket containing steamed buns and the braised beef in the cupboard basin! There were also glass bottles of cola in the lower compartment!

Damn it! These Japanese devils know how to enjoy themselves; they even have Coke! No need to be polite then!

By the firelight, he quickly went to the cupboard, opened the door, grabbed a piece of braised beef, and started gnawing on it! Even in later generations, I had never experienced eating such a large piece of meat. In short, it was awesome!

The match burned out quickly, and he tossed the matchstick far towards the stove before focusing intently on gnawing on his beef. While eating, he fumbled for a bottle of cola, bit off the cap with his teeth, and gulped it down. A bite of beef followed by a sip of cola—it was so satisfying!

After eating a small bowl-sized piece of braised beef, I no longer felt hungry. I felt energetic and refreshed. It had been more than a month since I last had a full meal!

After a hearty meal, he grabbed a piece of braised beef from the bowl and stuffed it into his pocket, then grabbed a bottle of cola and put it in his pocket as well. After a moment's thought, he added three steamed buns. Then, after another deliberation, he stuffed the empty cola bottle, cap and all, into his pocket, tightened his belt, closed the cupboard door, and prepared to head home. He also slipped the box of matches into his pocket; in this hell on earth, a box of matches might just play a crucial role!

The crime scene had to be cleaned up neatly. Taking so much stuff in such a small amount shouldn't arouse suspicion, right? A few pieces of beef and steamed buns wouldn't cause the Japanese to launch a massive search. Getting into trouble over such a small amount of food would be a huge loss! After all, he was hoping to use this route to recover his and Third Master's health! Making a fortune quietly was the best strategy!

After tidying up, I quickly left the kitchen, hung the door shut, crossed the front yard, and waited quietly for the searchlight to pass by. A moment later, the searchlight swept past the doorway. I hurriedly went outside, used a knife to reset the latch, and dashed to the wire fence. I quickly removed the hook, slipped through the three layers of wire, and disappeared into the bathroom, waiting for the next light to shine.

Once he got here, he was safe. Even if the lights shone on him, it wouldn't arouse the suspicion of the Japanese. After all, everyone needs to relieve themselves! However, to avoid any mishaps, it was best not to let the Japanese discover that he had been out. This route was his and Third Master's lifeline and supply line, and it couldn't be exposed easily!

Sure enough, the light swept across the room and found nothing amiss. Hurriedly returning to the thatched hut, a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. Being a thief truly requires a strong heart; most people can't do it!

After finding her place and lying down for a while to calm down, she took out her spoils for the night and quietly woke up Third Master next to her, handing him a large piece of beef.
