Chapter 223 Court Musicians
In a flash, people scattered and hurriedly ran outside. This wasn't the first time; since the beginning of winter, the Japanese soldiers from nearby strongholds had been frequently coming out to plunder, looting anything of value, dragging away any pretty women they encountered, and beating anyone who resisted! The villagers were suffering terribly!
"Youngest brother! Get rid of that thing right now! What time is it and you're still clinging to that broken bow! If you keep blocking the door like that, no one can escape!" Shunzi yelled from behind the youngest brother.
At this moment, the youngest brother was blocking the doorway with a cotton bow on his back. Because it was too long and he was carrying it on his back, he had one foot in the door and one foot out, and the cotton bow was stuck in the door frame and couldn't get out!
This was originally a simple matter; all you had to do was step back a little and slide the bow diagonally out. But at this critical moment, everyone was only focused on running out, and the crowd was so dense that they were stuck at the doorway, and there was no room to back up!
So the more anxious people got, the more they pushed and shoved, and the more they pushed and shoved, the less they could get out. People couldn't help but get anxious and frustrated!
"Old man! What are you doing with that broken bow? What time is it and you're still thinking about fluffing cotton?"
"This thing is a block of wood, nobody would want it if you just threw it on the street! Why are you in such a hurry to carry it around?"
"You're risking your life for money! If the Japanese come, you'll be the first one shot!"
"You stingy man! You won't even throw away a broken cotton bow, you deserve to toil your whole life!"
"You're just talking nonsense! If you step back, I'll get out, won't I? This is a family heirloom, passed down for generations, you know?" The youngest son got angrier and angrier as he listened, and shouted at the top of his lungs.
"You old blockhead? No wonder you're so stubborn, it's a family tradition!"
"Who's being stubborn? If you're so capable, why don't you take a step back? If I could run away after losing this thing, you try running away and show me!" the youngest brother retorted sharply, his neck stiff with sarcasm.
"Run? You're dreaming! You try running and see what happens!" This person was so anxious that he just went along with it and started arguing.
"Let's run! I just pulled and we got out!" The youngest brother was determined. He untied the rope from his body and stepped out the door, leaving only the longbow stuck in the doorway, squeezed tightly by the crowd!
"Youngest brother! When you get out, take this piece of junk with you! Uncle is still stuck in there!" Shunzi shouted from inside as he saw his youngest brother free.
"Uncle Shunzi, you wait! I'm going to try and get you out here!" The youngest brother realized that even though he was out, Uncle Shunzi was still stuck inside!
He ran back without a care, grabbed Shunzi's arm and pulled him out, trying to pull him out through the small triangular hole formed by the bow and the door frame!
"Ouch! Ouch! You're murdering your own uncle! This is utterly disrespectful, you know? Let go! Let go right now!" Shunzi was stuck in the door frame, wincing in pain and muttering incessantly!
"Uncle Shunzi! Bear with it! It's better to be in pain than to lose your life when the Japanese come! You'll be out soon!" But this guy was stubborn; the more they shouted, the harder he pulled, until one of his feet was already braced against the doorframe!
"..." Shunzi was utterly devastated! This nephew is so filial!
"Climb through the window!"
Just as everyone was crowding at the door and unable to get any closer, someone shouted and "whoosh!" jumped out of the window.
The crowd, which had been huddled together, finally realized that even if the door was blocked, there were still windows! One by one, they quickly followed suit and jumped out of the windows, disappearing in the blink of an eye. Only the storyteller, Li Dadi's disc, and the uncle and nephew who kept pulling at the door remained in the room!
Just as these people were preparing to jump out of the window to leave, it was too late. A squad of Japanese soldiers had already surrounded the place with guns at their ready! An officer, holding a knife in one hand, stared at the strangely dressed uncle and nephew at the door with great confusion. He cautiously approached and looked the large cotton bow up and down. Finally, unable to resist his curiosity, he reached out and plucked the bowstring.
"Boom~~"
The cotton bow produced a deep, resonant sound that was very long and lingering!
"What kind of musical instrument is this? Is it very valuable?" the officer asked with interest. He clearly misunderstood, thinking the two were fighting over this large instrument!
"..." The youngest son and Shunzi looked at each other, puzzled. How did the ancestral cotton bow become a musical instrument?
"Baka! Answer the officer's questions quickly! Lord Sasaki is a music teacher from the Empire. Be honest, or you'll all die!" a Japanese soldier shouted as he stepped forward.
"This...this is my family's heirloom cotton..."
"A single-stringed harp! These two were once court musicians who served the emperor!"
Before the youngest son could finish speaking, the storyteller interrupted him, spouting nonsense! The uncle and nephew were completely bewildered; how did their three generations of cotton carding end up in the palace?
"Court musicians? Those who play music for the emperor?" Sasaki Ichiro asked, his interest piqued, as he stroked the large bow with one hand.
"Ah, right! Right, right, right! It was played for the Emperor! This is one of the court instruments passed down from this musician's ancestors, and that one too!" The storyteller got even more excited, and decided to go all out and exaggerate the value of these two broken pieces. He just hoped that the old Japanese devil would leave quickly after getting these two junks, so as not to ruin his teahouse!
"Hey! Are you guys performing here? Why are those two holding onto the harp?" Sasaki asked, puzzled.
"Well... didn't the Japanese soldiers come over? The two of them couldn't bear to part with this harp and started fighting over it!" As he spoke, the storyteller winked at the two of them, signaling them to cooperate.
Since the Japanese have already misunderstood, I might as well just go along with what they say! I just hope they leave quickly after grabbing those two junk items; my teahouse can't afford to be wrecked by them! Besides, business is booming right now; if the Japanese wreck it, I'll have nothing left!
"Yoshi! Play a tune for me here, so we can experience the music of the court! Hurry up!" Sasaki Ichiro was in a great mood and eagerly asked them to perform on the spot.
"Traitor!" The uncle and nephew exchanged a glance, and the youngest couldn't help but curse. Even the most foolish person would realize at this moment that the storyteller had betrayed them!
"My goodness! Hurry up and send those Japanese devils away! They're just two pieces of broken wood, right? I'll make them up to you later!" The storyteller, seeing that the uncle and nephew weren't cooperating, quickly came over and whispered.
"What did they say?" Ichiro Sasaki asked in a deep voice.
"A pipe! The old man wants to smoke a pipe to get a feel for it! He has too many problems!" The storyteller quickly made up a story.
"Baka! Play it quickly! Otherwise, you'll die!" Sasaki Ichiro urged.
"Hey! Hey! Did you two hear that? Hurry up and start! It'll be good for the Japanese soldiers to go back sooner after the performance!" the storyteller said, winking and making faces.
"Lackey!" Shunzi cursed angrily.
"Baka! You old man can't even smoke, and you want to drink? Hurry up and perform for the Japanese commander! Didn't you hear what the Japanese commander said? Otherwise, you'll die!" The storyteller pleaded as he leaned closer to the uncle and nephew.
