Rebirth to Save Myself

Chapter 38 Birthday

Su Xia's birthday happened to be the registration day; today was registration, and tomorrow was the first day of school. Chen Yuan and Su Xia had been preparing to register together for a long time, and as soon as they went out, they ran into Lin Mohan waiting for Chen Wenwei at the door.

Lin Mohan rushed up to greet Su Xia with joy as soon as he saw her: "Happy New Year, Su Xia!"

"Happy New Year!" Su Xia replied.

"Thanks to you, I had a really great year! I was planning to visit you during the holiday, but Chen Yuan told me you weren't spending the holiday here." Lin Mohan chatted with him in a very familiar manner.

"Yes, I went to Pucheng." Su Xia was no longer as indifferent to Lin Mohan as before. At least in her heart, Lin Mohan was just an ordinary friend, not Chen Wenwei's friend.

Wow, is it fun over there?

"It's alright. I'm not going to the city, I'm going to the countryside, which is similar to where we live."

"Hey, Lin Mohan, you said you'd thank Xia Xia but didn't do anything practical?" Chen Yuan immediately spoke up to defend Su Xia.

"How could there not be? Su Xia, I've covered all your snacks for this semester, no, for all three years of junior high. I hope Su Xia will continue to carry me in the new semester."

"Yes, no problem."

As soon as Chen Wenwei stepped out of his house, he saw the three of them chatting together, so he walked over and asked, "What are you talking about?"

"Why are you taking so long to talk to me? I've been waiting for you for ages." Chen Yuan rolled her eyes, not understanding what Chen Wenwei was doing at home, a man dawdling like that.

"I was helping my mom with some chores. Besides, I didn't know you guys were going to report for duty so early." Chen Wenwei was speechless. Reporting for duty for a day was fine, but these guys insisted on going so early in the morning.

"It's Xiaxia's birthday today, so of course we have to go register early!" Chen Yuan was already thinking about what delicious food her mother would cook when she got home. Her father had also postponed his trip for a few days because of Xiaxia's birthday, so they had to get the registration sorted out quickly!

"It's your birthday today, Su Xia!" Lin Mohan exclaimed, then added, "I didn't prepare a gift, what a blunder!"

"It's just a birthday, it's alright." Su Xia was used to not celebrating her birthday, but Chen Yuan's family felt that it was a very meaningful day and they had to celebrate it.

"No, I need to hurry up and buy a gift after I register." Lin Mohan had just celebrated the New Year and received a considerable amount of lucky money, so he was quite well-off now.

"Then come to my house for dinner tonight," Chen Yuan said, inviting Lin Mohan to join her when she heard he was going to buy a gift.

"no problem."

The four students arrived at the school to register, and the two homeroom teachers were very happy that they could play together. They were all top students, and they could learn from and improve with each other. It would also be a great achievement for them if one of them got into the top high school.

"Su Xia, keep up the good work this semester. With your current grades, getting into No. 1 High School shouldn't be a problem," the homeroom teacher said with satisfaction.

"Understood, teacher." Su Xia nodded.

The four of them went straight home after registering, while the two homeroom teachers were still discussing the situation of Su Xia and the other three.

"I heard that Lin Mohan often asks Su Xia questions, no wonder his grades improved so quickly last semester."

"Yes, students who want to learn will find ways to learn. Su Xia went through something like that last semester, and she was still able to study hard. That's really commendable."

"But kids these days are really wicked; they actually came up with ways to frame people. Back then, we were never like that; we were all focused on getting into high school."

“It’s different for them now; they’re all only children and spoiled by their families.”

Standing outside, Zhou Huimin overheard the teachers' conversation inside and knew they were talking about them, so she didn't dare go in. Because their attempt to frame Su Xia had failed, they had been exposed instead. No one knew who had spread the rumors, but the entire school's teachers and students knew. They suddenly became pariahs, hated by everyone. This was originally a small village, so if the students knew, their parents knew too.

Their parents were also looked down upon, with the belief that such behavior in children was a product of their parents' upbringing, implying that the adults were no better. Vivian Chow's parents were particularly angry and completely neglected their daughter. They felt that girls didn't need so much education; they just needed her to get married when she reached marriageable age, and the dowry could be used for her brother's wedding.

"What are you doing standing here? Isn't the teacher here?" a classmate asked when Zhou Huimin didn't go in.

"Yes, I just suddenly needed to use the restroom." Vivian Chow turned and ran away, leaving her classmate looking completely bewildered before going inside to register.

After registering, Su Xia went home first. Her grandmother didn't prepare a lavish meal for her birthday. Instead, when Su Xia mentioned going to a classmate's house that evening, her grandmother simply waved her hand to indicate she understood. Su Xia was already used to her grandmother's actions. She went upstairs to grab some things and then went to Chen Yuan's house.

Chen Jianguo and Chen Chunqi were discussing dinner at home. In addition to the four of them, they had invited Chen Wenwei. However, Chen Yuan came back saying that Lin Mohan would also be coming, so the two of them decided to add a few more dishes.

"Yuanyuan, how's Lin Mohan's career going?" Chen's mother asked curiously.

Xiaxia said that they are just ordinary friends.

"Why would ordinary friends come to her birthday party and bring gifts?"

"Um, I was the one who invited her, not Xiaxia."

"That's different. It depends on who has the birthday. If it were you, people would probably have to think about it."

"Mom, your daughter isn't that bad, is she?"

"Yes, yes, it's not bad."

That evening, Lin Mohan and Chen Wenwei went to Chen Yuan's house for dinner. Chen's parents prepared a huge feast, and Su Xia truly felt what family love meant from Chen's parents.

"Thank you, godfather and godmother," Su Xia said solemnly.

"Child, don't thank me. Come on, sit down at the table. You're the star of the show today."

"Happy birthday, Su Xia! This is a gift for you, please accept it."

"Thank you!"

"Here you go, Chen Yuan picked this out for me." Chen Wenwei also handed over a wrapped gift.

"You'll definitely like it, Xiaxia," Chen Yuan said, winking at Su Xia.

"Really? I'm really looking forward to it. Let's see what gift you picked out for me." Su Xia accepted Chen Wenwei's gift and placed it aside.

"Mine, mine, my gift!" Chen Yuan jumped up and turned to get the gift she had just hidden when she saw that Chen Wenwei and Lin Mohan had both given her gifts.

"I know Yuanyuan will never forget." Su Xia looked at Chen Yuan with affection and helped her take out the gift.

"Hehe, Xiaxia, here's my gift for you." Chen Yuan handed it to Su Xia with a silly grin, then looked at her parents.

"Happy birthday, Xiaxia." Mr. and Mrs. Chen also handed over a gift.

"Thank you, godfather and godmother, for preparing such a wonderful meal for me and for giving me a gift." Su Xia's eyes were slightly red as she looked at Mr. and Mrs. Chen.

"You'll always be our daughter, just like Yuanyuan." Chen's mother hugged Su Xia, her heart aching for the girl. But it's alright, she'll cherish and love her dearly.
