Rebirth to Save Myself
Chapter 28 Classification
Chen Yuan and Chen Wenwei registered with the homeroom teacher of Class 1, while Su Xia and Lin Mohan registered with the homeroom teacher of Class 2. After registering, the four went to the back to collect their textbooks. Chen Wenwei and Lin Mohan, the two boys, took on the responsibility of helping the two girls carry their books.
"I'm so sad, I have to go to school tomorrow!" Although Chen Yuan gave up on the idea of asking the teacher to change her class, she was still sad that she wasn't in the same class as Su Xia.
“Alright, I just found out. The classes will be reshuffled in the second and third years of junior high. They will separate the good students from the bad ones. You will still have a chance to be in the same class as Su Xia,” Chen Wenwei said.
"Really? Then I'll study hard and try to be in the same class as Xiaxia. Xiaxia, you have to help me!"
"no problem."
On the first day of school, everyone happily arrived at the classroom and sat down with their familiar classmates and friends. Su Xia randomly found a spot at the back of the classroom near the back door to sit and read. As soon as Lin Mohan entered the classroom, he noticed Su Xia sitting alone in the corner, completely out of place amidst the surrounding noise.
He slowly walked forward and then asked, "Is anyone here?"
Su Xia looked up when she heard the voice, and then said, "No one's here. You can sit for a while."
"Why can I only sit for one minute?" Lin Mohan thought Su Xia didn't want to sit at the same table with him.
"The teacher won't allow boys and girls to sit together." Su Xia glanced at Lin Mohan, as if to say why he would ask such a stupid question.
"Oh, as expected of the great Su." Lin Mohan sat down next to Su Xia and was surprised to find that Su Xia was looking at a junior high school textbook: "You can understand it?"
"I understand." Su Xia said and continued reading.
Lin Mohan felt that Su Xia was still the same as before, quiet and reserved. So he looked around at his potential deskmate and then asked Su Xia, "Su Xia, who do you want to sit with?"
"I'm not sitting at the same table as anyone else." After saying that, Su Xia quickly explained, fearing Lin Mohan would ask more questions, "Because the number of people in our class is odd."
"You understand all of this? I'm counting on you for the next three years, Master."
"Relying on me is useless; you have to study hard yourself. If you don't understand something, you can ask your teacher or me."
"That's enough for me, Master Su."
"Call me Su Xia, not Su the Great God."
"Okay, Su Xia, great god."
Su Xia sighed, wondering if the child was pretending to be stupid or not. Looking towards the door, she saw the teacher was already on her way. Thinking that she would soon be rid of this silly child, she decided to just bear with it a little longer.
When the teacher entered the classroom, everyone quieted down. The teacher glanced at where everyone was sitting and said, "Everyone, stand up and go to the hallway outside. We'll line up in two rows according to height, boys and girls."
The group sluggishly left, lining up according to height. The teacher made minor adjustments before assigning seats. Just as Su Xia had predicted, there was one extra person on the girls' side. Su Xia, being relatively tall, had moved to the very back when queuing and managed to get the seat she had been looking for.
Lin Mohan was incredibly impressed to see that Su Xia didn't even have to carry anything. How could someone be so accurate in calculating their own seat? He decided he should stick with Su Xia from now on.
"Alright, I'll take attendance. Everyone whose name is called, come up and introduce yourselves so everyone can get to know you." The teacher gestured for everyone to be quiet, then opened the class roster. The roster was arranged according to everyone's sixth-grade final exam scores, so the first person the teacher called out was "Su Xia."
Su Xia resignedly closed the book and slowly walked towards the podium, inwardly complaining as she went: "Why do teachers always do this? Wouldn't it be better to just sit in your seat and introduce yourself? Why do they have to walk to the podium? It's so embarrassing. Besides, hardly anyone is really listening to someone's self-introduction anyway."
"Just briefly introduce yourself, including your name and hobbies," the teacher reminded her.
"My name is Su Xia, and I don't have any hobbies." Su Xia finished speaking and was about to go downstairs when the teacher stopped her.
"Wait a minute, that's too short. I remember you were ranked number one, right? Could you share your learning experience with everyone?"
"Well, it depends on a bit of luck. My learning experience is to read more books and do more practice problems." Su Xia finished speaking and went downstairs immediately without waiting for the teacher to speak.
The teacher, feeling helpless, moved on to the next name. After all thirty-odd students in the class had introduced themselves, almost half the lesson was over. The teacher then began selecting class officers: "Does anyone recommend themselves? Raise your hand if you'd like to give it a try."
"Teacher, I want to be the class monitor." A boy raised his hand.
"Oh, what's your name? Why do you want to be class monitor?" The teacher gently asked him to stand up and speak.
"My name is Zhou Xiaojie, and I come from Xiaozhuang Primary School. I was the class monitor in primary school, and I have been the class monitor for three years now. I believe I can do this job well," the boy, Zhou Xiaojie, introduced himself confidently.
"Hmm, very good. Besides Zhou Xiaojie, who else wants to be class monitor? Su Xia, would you like to be class monitor?" The teacher called on Su Xia's name. Normally, teachers would choose students with good grades to be class monitors in elementary school. Su Xia has such good grades, so she should have served as a class officer before.
"Teacher, Su Xia doesn't want to be a class officer." Lin Mohan raised his hand to indicate, and then said, "Su Xia has never been a class officer in her six years of elementary school."
Su Xia then stood up and said, "I don't want to be any class officer. I hope the teacher understands."
The teacher reluctantly gestured for the two to sit down. Without any other recommendations, Zhou Xiaojie successfully became class monitor. The teacher appointed Huang Juanjuan as vice-monitor and the student ranked third in the class as academic representative. As for subject representatives, that was left to the subject teachers to choose.
As soon as get out of class ended, Lin Mohan ran to Su Xia's seat to claim credit: "Su Xia, I spoke up for you in class just now."
"Thank you!"
"Xiaxia!" Chen Yuan spotted her at the front door, then ran to the back door, pushed Lin Mohan aside, and sat down herself. Then she asked Su Xia, "Why are you sitting at the very back again, all alone?"
"The air is better back there, and it's quieter when you're all alone," Su Xia said.
"Yeah, we arranged the seats according to grades, and I'm in the front. That Zhou Huimin wanted to sit next to me, but luckily I pulled a girl aside. Has your class chosen a class monitor yet? Xiaxia, did the teacher ask you to be the class monitor?" Chen Yuan rattled off a series of questions.
"Of course there is. Luckily, I was quick-witted enough to talk to the teacher for her. Our class monitor is the one who copies the timetable on the blackboard, his name is Zhou Xiaojie." Lin Mohan pointed ahead.
"He's quite handsome, much better than Chen Wenwei." Chen Yuan swooned after just one glance.
"You're having Chen Wenwei as class monitor again? How cliché," Lin Mohan commented.
"There was nothing we could do; everyone voted by raising their hands," Chen Yuan said helplessly, shrugging her shoulders.
