Rebirth to Save Myself

Chapter 15 Unable to refuse

Ever since Su Xia accepted the bottle of water, Chen Yuan began her feeding spree: a bag of spicy strips one day, a piece of candy the next, and a bottle of cola the day after. Whenever Su Xia showed any sign of not wanting to accept it, Chen Yuan would look at her pitifully with teary eyes until she finally gave in.

Chen Wenwei was also surprised by Chen Yuan's behavior. They were neighbors and had grown up together since childhood, practically childhood sweethearts. Plus, one was the class monitor and the other the vice-monitor, and they often co-hosted school events. That's why Chen Wenwei had stood up for Chen Yuan against Lin Li last time. Because of this relationship, Lin Li and his friends often teased them, saying they were a couple.

Chen Wenwei thought for a moment, but still couldn't shake the feeling of unease, and asked Chen Yuan, "Why are you suddenly being so nice to Su Xia?"

Upon hearing this, Chen Yuan also spoke up, saying, "I want to be friends with her."

Chen Wenwei sighed, "This isn't how you make friends!" This rich girl had never lacked friends since she was little. Because of her good family background and being the class monitor, a bunch of people were eager to play with her. But he couldn't bear to see her get frustrated, so he gave her some advice: "Making friends isn't about constantly giving her things. That would put a lot of pressure on her. You could try inviting her over to your house on weekends to play with dolls or jump rope together to build a better relationship."

Chen Yuan thought about Chen Wenwei's words and felt that they made a lot of sense, so she nodded and said, "Yes, I understand. You are really my good sister."

"Forget it, who's your sister?" Chen Wenwei said, seeing that Chen Yuan had taken his words to heart and stopped talking.

After that, Chen Yuan stopped sending Su Xia gifts, which finally relieved Su Xia. Otherwise, with Chen Yuan sending gifts at this rate, Su Xia's meager savings would never be enough to pay off her debts. However, Chen Yuan changed her approach to getting closer to Su Xia, which also gave Su Xia a headache.

Back then, girls loved to jump rope during breaks. As the class monitor, Chen Yuan naturally received invitations, so every break Chen Yuan would come to Su Xia's side and invite her to join. Su Xia had jumped rope in her past life, but in this life she just wanted to be a couch potato. She even half-heartedly did her running in PE class, so how could she possibly jump rope? Chen Yuan thought she wouldn't be afraid of being laughed at, so she privately taught her. Su Xia could only treat it as a way to relax her brain.

In her previous life, she had cancer at a young age, so in this life, Su Xia takes great care of her health. No matter how bad her grandmother's cooking is, she will eat it. Although she may not be full, at least she has the nutrition her mother used to provide, so she's not anemic. Plus, she runs around the streets every morning to keep herself from becoming weak. However, she really has no interest in skipping rope, but she can't resist Chen Yuan's enthusiasm.

The other girls couldn't stand Su Xia's awkwardness. Chen Yuan had asked her three or four times, but she kept refusing. Everyone was trying to please Chen Yuan, but Chen Yuan not only didn't appreciate it, but also went and befriended Su Xia. Everyone knew that Su Xia had been going to and from school alone every day for the past few years, never making friends, never taking on a class leadership role, and just sitting in her seat all day, going straight home after school. She was never seen in the village on weekends; people said she stayed home all the time, only going out to help her grandmother.

“Chen Yuan, Su Xia is ignoring you, why are you still going?” Zhou Huimin said.

"What nonsense are you talking about? She was clearly right." Chen Yuan looked at Zhou Huimin and felt that this person was deliberately trying to sow discord between her and Su Xia. What was her mentality?

“Huimin isn’t lying. Every time you go to call Su Xia, she never comes,” Zhang Xiurong added from the side.

“Yes, yes, Huimin is right,” the others echoed.

"If you don't understand, don't talk nonsense." Chen Yuan calmed down, stopped playing with them, and went back to the classroom.

"Why is she throwing a tantrum? Isn't what I said true?" Vivian Chow was also annoyed when Chen Yuan left. It was clearly Chen Yuan who shamelessly tried to please Su Xia, and she wasn't even allowed to say anything.

"Oh dear, you should say less, it wouldn't be good if she heard you." Zhang Xiurong quickly pulled Zhou Huimin's hand, telling her to shut up.

“Yes, she is the class monitor after all, and the teacher trusts her. It’s not good to have a conflict with her,” Yu Qing also advised from the side.

Seeing that class was about to start, the others stopped playing, put away the rope, and went back to the classroom.

Because of what Zhou Huimin and others said, Chen Yuan refused the suggestion to go down and play jump rope during the break of the third period, saying that she had not finished her homework and had to hand it in in the afternoon.

Zhou Huimin and the others had no choice but to go downstairs to play by themselves. As they walked, they kept saying that Chen Yuan was pretentious, and that she gave Su Xia a hard time after just one comment. Chen Wenwei, who had just returned from the restroom, overheard this and stopped them with a very bad expression, saying, "Gossiping about others behind their backs, aren't you afraid of being struck by lightning?"

When Vivian Chow saw that it was Chen Wenwei, she retorted without hesitation: "Vice class monitor, everyone says you like the class monitor, could it be true? Otherwise, why did you rush up to warn us as soon as we mentioned the class monitor?"

“Vivian Chow, your heart is black and everything you think is black. Don’t assume that others are like you!” Chen Wenwei was not polite either. He had caught Vivian Chow talking badly about Chen Yuan behind her back many times. He had told Chen Yuan about it, but she didn’t believe him.

"You're not angry because I hit a nerve, are you?" Vivian Chow asked anxiously.

"Are you guys still going to play or not? Class is starting soon." The girls from Class 2 next door had been waiting on the playground for a long time, and when they turned around, they found Zhou Huimin and her friends arguing with Chen Wenwei on the stairs. They were speechless.

"What are we playing? I'm not playing anymore." Vivian Chow stomped her foot angrily, pushed Chen Wenwei aside, and ran upstairs.

"Huimin, Huimin, wait for us!" Zhang Xiurong and Yu Qing quickly followed.

"What? You guys are the ones who wanted to play too. You waited downstairs for ages and now you're not going to play anymore? You're crazy." The girls from Class Two cursed as they put away the rope and went upstairs.

Chen Wenwei almost lost his balance when Zhou Huimin pushed him, but Su Xia grabbed him and pulled him back. He turned around, saw it was Su Xia, and said, "Thank you!"

"No need, consider this me returning the favor," Su Xia said coldly.

"What favor? I don't know anything about it." Chen Wenwei was completely bewildered. What favor was Su Xia talking about? He hadn't even spoken to her, so where did this favor come from?

"You were the one who told Chen Yuan to stop sending me things, right? That solved a big problem for me, so I'm pulling you aside to even things out." Su Xia finished speaking and went downstairs to the bathroom.

Chen Wenwei watched her retreating figure, finding it amusing and also thinking how clever Su Xia was. He had clearly spoken to Chen Yuan about this privately. Knowing Chen Yuan's personality, she certainly wouldn't reveal their conversation. This meant Su Xia had guessed it herself and was secretly planning to repay him. Dealing with someone like that was very pleasant.
