Rebirth to Save Myself

Chapter 13 Detachment

Su's mother gave birth to her younger sister in 04, just one year younger than Su Yue. But it was another daughter, which caused her mixed feelings. The older generation believed that the sex of a child depended on the girl, so her grandmother naturally assumed that Su's mother's womb was uncooperative, having given birth to four girls in a row.

Su Xia didn't care about these things. Although she felt sorry for her mother, she believed that there was always a reason why someone was pitiful. If it wasn't her mother's own choice, who would force her to keep having children until she gave birth to a boy? Instead of sympathizing with her mother, Su Xia thought it was better to plan for her own future.

Su Xia's grades have consistently ranked first in her class over the years. Although she doesn't always get a perfect score, most of the time it's just minor issues. She receives so many awards every year that her teachers want her to be the class monitor, but she declined.

"Why don't you want to be class monitor? Your grades are so good, you can set a good example for everyone!"

"I don't have time, I need to study."

This statement left the teacher with no reason to refute it, since Su Xia's grades were indeed very good.

Su Xia didn't want to be class monitor because she thought it was too much trouble. She'd have to do so many things for the teacher, from maintaining class order to fetching water and homework. Besides, she hadn't planned on making friends and had always been a loner. She figured if she were class monitor, no one would listen to her. Instead of wasting energy on these things, she'd rather learn more and build a foundation for the future.

Later, the teacher chose the girl who ranked second in grades to be the class monitor, and then chose a boy to be the vice class monitor to assist her. All the subject teachers knew Su Xia's personality and her desire not to be a class officer, so Su Xia's name wasn't called on after a round of class representative selections, which Su Xia was quite satisfied with.

Although Su Xia wasn't a class officer, she actively participated in school competitions and exams. Over the years, she had saved up a sum of money using the money her mother gave her during the Lunar New Year, plus her own savings from frugal living. This money would come in handy when she needed money but her grandmother refused to give it to her.

Before, she would spend all her money on spicy snacks or Barbie dolls, ending up with nothing saved. She also had to be mindful of her grandmother's mood when it came to spending money. If her grandmother was in a good mood, she'd give her money; if she was in a bad mood, she'd give her a hard time and scold her. She never wanted to go through that again.

Before they knew it, it was fifth grade. All the students from other villages had transferred, so the school split into two classes. All of Su Xia's old friends went to the second class; nothing changed. The only difference was that Su Xia stopped interacting with them from the beginning. Su Xia knew everyone said behind her back that she was aloof and ignored others. Whenever someone asked Su Xia to play, she would refuse, saying she needed to study. Plus, Su Xia had good grades and was often used by teachers as an example to educate others, so Su Xia had no friends, and everyone was subtly ostracizing her.

Su Xia didn't care. Back in third and fourth grade, they deliberately took out Su Xia's homework, hoping the teacher would criticize her for not handing in her assignments. But the teacher didn't say anything after finding out Su Xia hadn't handed in her homework, since Su Xia had good grades. The teacher even deliberately left Su Xia alone to clean when assigned cleaning duties, and Su Xia didn't care and finished it herself before going home.

Later, they realized that Su Xia was completely unyielding, and since she hadn't done anything particularly difficult, some people even went to her to ask how to solve problems, and Su Xia patiently taught them. So everyone understood Su Xia's personality and stopped teasing her. They also discovered that Su Xia didn't hold grudges and would always teach them anything they asked. She would immediately give them test papers if they wanted them. Those with good grades immediately gravitated towards Su Xia, discussing study methods.

Su Xia was also confused about what had happened. At first, when the teacher said she hadn't handed in her homework, she thought she had missed it, so she made it up. After it happened several times, she understood what was going on, but the teacher, considering her good grades and her habit of going to the office to ask questions, didn't pursue the matter. As for cleaning, she didn't care. After school, everyone left, and she could quietly study vocabulary by herself; besides, the classroom wasn't very dirty, and cleaning wouldn't take much time.

She would answer her classmates' questions; it was a good thing that they were willing to learn, and she felt it was no loss to share what she knew with them. Later, the class monitor and vice-monitor became her fans and even spoke up for her, which left Su Xia feeling both helpless and amused.

She went to the toilet during break and when she came back, she heard the class monitor talking to her cleaning partner. Because they were from a rural primary school, they were basically in the same class from the first grade. The class monitor had been in office for many years and was very authoritative.

"Lin Li, did you not clean again yesterday?" the class monitor asked as he walked over to Lin Li's desk.

"Mind your own business, you damn sissy." Lin Li was a notorious troublemaker in the class. He had bad grades and loved to cause trouble. Because his seat number was next to Su Xia's, Su Xia and he were always assigned to clean together.

"If you insult me, believe me or not I'll tell the teacher." The class monitor felt wronged, as there were always some people who disobeyed her and caused all sorts of trouble.

"Tell the teacher, tell the teacher! All you ever do is tell the teacher! Chen Yuan, is there any other way?" After Lin Li finished speaking, the boys next to her laughed. They were all bad students who played with Lin Li and were very hostile towards the class monitor.

"You, you!" Chen Yuan stomped her feet in anger, pointing at them but unable to speak for a long time.

"Lin Li, shut up. It was wrong of you to dump all the cleaning duties on Su Xia when I assigned you to do it. The class monitor came to you, and you're still complaining. It's one thing to tell the teacher, but it would be another to have your parents called in." Vice class monitor Chen Wenwei stood up from his seat and walked over to Chen Yuan.

Lin Li was a little scared when he heard that his parents would be called in, but he still couldn't swallow his anger and said, "Vice class monitor, why do you always stand up for the class monitor when he's being bullied? You wouldn't happen to be..." Lin Li looked around and gestured for everyone to speak.

Everyone understood, and then they all shouted in unison, "Chen Wenwei likes Chen Yuan! Chen Wenwei likes Chen Yuan! Chen Wenwei likes Chen Yuan!"

"What nonsense are you talking about? Don't slander people," Chen Wenwei immediately explained, but his voice alone was no match for that of five or six people. It happened to be the long break between classes, and students from other classes were also attracted by their shouts and came to see what was going on.

This made Chen Yuan so angry that she went back to her seat and started crying. Su Xia, watching the farce in the classroom, also sighed and went to the teacher's office.

Before long, the homeroom teacher arrived at the scene. Seeing that the situation was indeed similar to what Su Xia had described, she immediately said, "Stop it, all of you! Lin Li, and what are you all shouting about?!"

When the boys saw it was their homeroom teacher, they immediately cowered and shut up. Lin Li dared to argue with the class monitor and vice-monitor, but he didn't dare to confront the homeroom teacher. He felt like he had plopped down on a stool.

"You lot, come with me to the office."
