Rebirth: Making a Fortune in Ancient Times
Chapter 7 can really be sold for money.
With Changyun accompanying them, Liu felt reassured and let them go. The two inquired along the way and learned that there were two clinics and one pharmacy in the small town. After finding out which clinic had a good reputation, they carried their baskets and went to a clinic called Baohetang. Although it was only after breakfast, several patients were already waiting in the lobby. Seeing the two enter, a child of about eight or nine years old came over to ask if they needed to see a doctor or get medicine.
Jinghe said to the man: "Young man, we are here to sell medicine."
Hearing her say that, Xiaotong led the two directly to the medicine counter and said to the person inside: "Master, these two kids are here to sell medicine. Do you think we can take them?"
The herbalist seemed very kind. He smiled and said to the brother and sister, "You're so young, yet you can already dig up herbs? Let me see them."
Changyun took the small basket off his back, and Jinghe reached out and took it from him. He then took out a bunch of golden thread lotus and placed them on the counter. He picked one up, examined the leaves carefully, and then smelled it. "Hmm, not bad, not bad..." he said, then plucked a leaf, chewed it, and swallowed it.
He looked at Changyun and said: "Your golden silk grass is of very good quality. We can buy it here. How do you want to sell it?"
Changyun scratched his head, thinking to himself that Xiaxia was right, it really could be sold for money! He looked up at the medicine dispenser and said, "You can tell my sister, she dug this up."
The herbalist lowered his gaze and asked, "Young lady, how much do you plan to sell this golden thread grass for?"
Jinghe thought for a moment and said, "When we came here, the adults in our family told us that 'Baohetang is the most fair, with good medical skills and ethics.' We don't know much about the herbal medicine market. Please tell us your price. My brother and I believe that the price you offer will be fair and that you won't cheat us children."
The pharmacist chuckled as she chattered away, saying with a smile, "You're quite the talker, young lady. I really can't lower the price, otherwise I'd be letting down the high praise you've given me!" He then shook his head and sighed, feigning helplessness.
"This is fresh, how about twenty coins a pound? What do you two think?"
"Okay, I'll do as you say," Jinghe readily agreed.
"Sanqi, take them to the backyard to weigh them and see how many kilograms they weigh, then settle the bill for them," the medicine dispenser said to the boy who had led them there earlier.
"Yes, Master"
After speaking, the boy led them to the backyard. Changyun wanted to help Xiaxia carry the small basket, but Jinghe refused. She wanted to find an opportunity to put some of the golden thread lotus from her spatial storage into the basket. If she asked her brother to help carry it, she wouldn't have the chance to do so.
With her brother walking in front, Jinghe carried the basket in one hand and reached into it with the other. In the blink of an eye, she successfully transferred nearly five pounds of golden thread lotus from her spatial dimension into the basket. The weight in her hand increased instantly, and if she hadn't been prepared beforehand, the basket might have fallen to the ground.
Sanqi led them to the backyard to weigh the food, which totaled eight jin and three liang. The total was one hundred and sixty-six wen. After reporting the weight to the brother and sister, he told them to wait while he went to the front to get the money from the craftsman.
Watching him leave, Changyun said to Jinghe with some doubt: "Did he weigh it wrong? I don't think it's that heavy!"
Looking at her brother, who was full of doubt, Jinghe looked innocent but made up a story: "Maybe you work hard all the time and are strong, so this weight is nothing to you."
When Sanqi returned, he had already prepared the copper coins strung together. He placed the coins in the hands of the brother and sister and asked them to count them. The two siblings didn't stand on ceremony and immediately divided them into two piles, each counting one pile, which came to exactly 166 coins. Sanqi watched them count carefully without showing any impatience, and simply stood quietly to the side waiting.
After watching the brother and sister put twenty or thirty copper coins on each of them, and put the rest in a small cloth bag at the bottom of the small basket, he took them back to the main hall after everything was tidied up.
After saying goodbye to the doctor, Jinghe prepared to leave. As they reached the clinic entrance, Jinghe said to Sanqi, who had been leading them, "Brother Sanqi, thank you for seeing us out. What should we call that doctor?"
Sanqi seemed surprised by her question, grunted in response, and immediately said: "That's my master, surnamed Li, who is also the manager of this clinic. If you find any herbs in the future, just send them over. Our clinic offers very fair prices."
Jinghe thought this little boy named Sanqi was too smart. He looked only eight or nine years old, how could he guess someone's real purpose from a single question?
He thanked Sanqi profusely, and before leaving, he slipped two coins into his hand and ran off with Changyun. Without turning back, he said, "Please have some candy, Brother Sanqi."
Before Sanqi could even react, two copper coins had already been stuffed into her hand, and she didn't even have a chance to refuse before the person had already run away.
Sanqi looked at the copper coin in his hand, thought for a moment, and then put it in his pocket. He planned to tell his master about it that night.
Fearing that Sanqi would return the money, Jinghe dragged her brother and ran a long way before stopping.
Feeling the weight of the copper coins in her basket, Jinghe was a little excited. This was the first money she had earned since transmigrating to ancient times, and it was sustainable, as she still had many golden thread lotus flowers in her space that she could sell. She decided to go up the mountain again tomorrow to see if there were any other medicinal herbs she could dig up and transplant into her space.
The brother and sister didn't linger on the street; they took the money and went back to find Liu. Actually, she wanted to buy something, but considering her two aunts were still there, they would surely question her if they saw a little girl earning money to buy things. Should she tell them or not? If she did, how would she explain her knowledge of herbs? If she didn't, it would inevitably damage the relationships between the families. Therefore, she decided it was better to keep quiet and make her fortune.
When they returned to Liu's stall, it was nearly noon. The three sisters-in-law had almost sold out of eggs, with only a few left for each of them. Together, they had about twenty or thirty eggs. Jinghe said to them, "Auntie, Second Auntie, Mother, why don't you put the eggs in one basket to sell? That way it'll look like more, and customers can choose more." The women thought it was a good idea and immediately agreed. They put the eggs from several baskets together.
"You all sit in the back and rest. My brother and I will sell the rest," Jinghe said to them.
"Xiaxia is such a filial child. We old folks will listen to the children and take a rest." These words were spoken by Aunt Wang, Jinghe's eldest aunt. She liked her personality very much; she was humorous and cheerful.
"Don't miss out! Come and take a look at our fresh eggs! Two for one coin! You won't lose out or be cheated for one coin. Buy an egg and your child will be happy. Eating eggs will help them grow taller..." Before the sisters-in-law could even sit down properly, they heard Jinghe shouting at the top of her lungs, which startled them all.
Jinghe simply copied the advertising slogans from the two-dollar and ten-dollar stores from her previous life. Hearing these different slogans, some people on the street actually came over to look at what they were selling. Soon, four or five women had gathered around. Jinghe was sweet-talking, greeting everyone who came over with "Auntie" and "Madam." In just a few minutes, more than thirty eggs were sold out.
The two women standing behind her looked a little disappointed that they hadn't been able to buy anything. Jinghe smiled apologetically at them and said, "I'm sorry, ladies, I didn't bring enough today. We'll come back the day after tomorrow, and I'll save the bigger ones for you then." Hearing Jinghe say this, the two women immediately felt flattered and left happily.
Changyun and her sisters-in-law were stunned. They never expected Jinghe to have such a skill. They had sold eggs here so many times, but they had never dared to open their mouths to hawk their wares, and they had never sold them so quickly before.
"Xiaxia, do you know them? What if you pick the older ones for them and they don't come?" Changyun asked, a little dazed.
"I don't recognize them. All our chickens are the same breed and about the same size. We set aside a few for them who came earlier, saying they were reserved for them. If they hadn't come, we would have sold them all together! What's there to worry about?"
"Oh my, our Xiaxia has really made something of herself! From now on, she'll take Jinghe with her every time she goes shopping," Wang said to Liu.
"Oh, what's so promising about her? She's just a fearless and reckless little girl."
“Sister-in-law, you can’t say that about Xiaxia. I think Xiaxia has the ability to make money,” Aunt Li said gently.
Mrs. Liu knew that her daughter's difference was probably related to another part of her life. She was happy that her child was capable, but she also felt sad, wondering how much her daughter had suffered at the hands of that patriarchal couple.
"Hey...hey...what are you thinking about, Third Sister-in-law? Let's go. We still need to buy some things. Your Second Sister-in-law is going to the embroidery shop to sell tassels first. I want to go with her to broaden my horizons. Do you and the children want to come?"
