Rebirth: Making a Fortune in Ancient Times
Chapter 56 Things Happened at the Dinner Table
Li also leaned over to take a look, but still couldn't figure it out. She picked up a piece of pig intestine with her chopsticks, examined it closely, and then smelled it, looking like she wanted to say something but wasn't sure. Seeing everyone looking at her, she hesitantly asked, "Is this pig intestine?"
“How could that be? I’ve cooked pig intestines before, and they’re awful,” Wang retorted from the side, clearly not believing it.
Without saying much, Liu fed each of them a piece of braised large intestine.
"Is it delicious?" Liu asked with a smile as she looked at the two of them.
"Delicious, delicious." Wang nodded hurriedly, but still couldn't tell what it was.
"Mmm, it's delicious, with a chewy and sticky texture. What is this, Third Sister-in-law?" Li asked.
"This is pig intestines!" Liu's words stunned the two of them.
Li was alright; she had also thought it resembled large intestine, but wasn't sure. She was astonished that large intestine could be made into such a delicious dish. Wang, on the other hand, couldn't believe it. She picked up a piece and looked at it again, finally having to admit that it did indeed resemble large intestine, but how could it taste so good?
"Third sister-in-law, did you make this?" Wang asked Liu.
"No, Xiaxia made this." This time, Madam Liu didn't stand in front of her daughter. Because she didn't know how to make it. Even if she were asked to explain, she wouldn't be able to.
"Xiaxia, how did you make this pig intestine? Teach your aunt so that we can buy some pig intestine to satisfy our cravings when we want to eat meat at the old house in the future." Wang asked excitedly, holding her niece's hand.
Hearing this, Xia Yu suddenly thought of the scenes in transmigration novels where people made food from pig intestines and sold it for money. She had no intention of getting rich that way; the space had given her plenty of ways to make money, and she didn't need to do this. She couldn't even handle cleaning pig intestines. But her aunt and uncle could do it; it was a good way to make money.
Having made up her mind, she was about to explain in detail how to clean pig intestines to her two aunts when Old Mrs. Liu's voice came from outside, "Aren't the dumplings ready yet? You're taking so long to cook dumplings! Your father and the others are starving." She came in and saw her sisters-in-law huddled together, the cooked dumplings in a large basin beside them. "What are you all doing? The dumplings are ready, why aren't you taking them to your father and the others? What are you all whispering about? You can't even do one thing properly, and I, this old woman, have to worry about it."
"Mother, these are the dishes Xiaxia brought. Please try them," Liu said, handing the chopsticks in her hand to Liu Shi.
"I'm not eating. Give it to your father and the others. Take it upstairs." With that, she pushed away the chopsticks in Liu's hand and walked straight away with the bowl of dumplings.
The sisters-in-law exchanged glances and quickly followed their mother-in-law, carrying the bowls and chopsticks over. Liu found two plates and separated the pig intestines, placing them inside. She then took out another plate for the pig stomach; there wasn't enough for that, so she didn't divide it into smaller portions and planned to place it on the men's table. After setting the plates, she called Chunyu over to help carry all three plates upstairs.
When they arrived, Liu had already distributed dumplings to the men of the family, a large bowl for each. Chang Sheng, the eldest, ate as many as his father, while Chang Yun and Chang Yuan received fewer. When Xia Yu and her mother received their dumplings from Liu, each of them only had about ten in their bowls. Xia Yu felt hungry and looked at her two aunts' bowls, finding they had about the same amount as hers. Her eldest sister and Qiu Yu's bowls looked even smaller, and Dong Yu's bowl only had five. Only her aunt Qing He was an exception at the table; her bowl had more dumplings than the others, about the same amount as Liu's.
Xia Yu hadn't eaten much at the old house, so she wasn't used to this separate-serving system. The plate of boiled large intestines she brought was placed in the center of the table. Liu Shi didn't pick it up, and no one else dared to touch it, only eating the dumplings in their own bowls.
Smelling the aroma of pig intestines, Qinghe asked Liu Shi curiously, "Mother, what is this dish? It smells so good. Is it meat?" She picked up a piece with her chopsticks, but Liu Shi ignored her, simply saying that Changyun had brought it. Qinghe took a bite of the braised intestines, chewed a few times, and before she could even swallow, she eagerly picked up another piece. "Mother, this is delicious! Eat it quickly, or it'll be gone!"
Liu still didn't touch her chopsticks. Looking at the braised large intestines on the plate, she said to Qinghe, "Eat slowly, no one's going to take it from you." Her words made the others even less likely to pick up their chopsticks. But Xia Yu felt very uncomfortable hearing her say that. What did she mean by "no one's going to take it from my aunt"? Did everyone else at the table stop eating?
She didn't live in the old house and wasn't afraid of Old Lady Liu, so she didn't care what she was saying. She immediately picked up a piece of fatty intestine with her chopsticks and put it directly into Liu's bowl. "Grandma, try this, it's delicious!" She then quickly added several more pieces to Chunyu, Qiuyu, and Dongyu's bowls. Qinghe, seeing her fast movements, immediately became impatient: "What are you doing, Xiaxia? If they want to eat, can't they get it themselves? Why do you have to be a good person!"
Liu was also unhappy to see Xia Yu picking up food with her chopsticks. She picked up the piece of pork intestine that Xia Yu had put in her bowl and threw it on the table: "I don't want to eat this. If you want to eat, take your own." Xia Yu felt a little bad when she saw the pieces of pork intestine that were thrown on the table. What kind of life did a girl have in this family?
"Grandma, you really won't eat?" Xia Yu seemed not to understand Liu's dark expression.
"I'm not eating. Whoever wants to eat can eat." Liu kept her head down and ate the dumplings in her bowl, not even glancing at Xia Yu.
"Oh, okay then!" After saying that, Xia Yu picked up the plate of braised pork intestines from the table and put a few pieces in everyone's bowl except her aunt. She said, "My grandma doesn't like this. Let's finish it quickly. Don't leave this plate on the table. It makes my grandma feel uncomfortable."
"Hey, what are you doing? You've already divided everything up, but I haven't received anything!" Qinghe protested, starting to yell.
"Auntie, don't you already have several pieces in your bowl? My grandma just threw out a few more. If you're not full, you can eat them all. Besides, Auntie, you should lose weight. Look how thick your waist has become." Xia Yu didn't like this auntie and spoke to her very rudely.
Upon hearing Xia Yu speak of her youngest daughter in such a manner, Liu slammed her chopsticks on the table. "What's all the noise about? Can't you eat properly? Is this how your mother taught you to treat your elders?" she said, glaring fiercely at Liu.
Spring Rain, Autumn Rain, and Winter Rain were so frightened that they dared not eat, and put down their bowls. However, Winter Rain's eyes were bright and sparkling as she looked at her second sister.
The commotion they were making had already caught the attention of Grandpa Zhang and the others when Qinghe started yelling. Now, Grandpa Zhang got a headache just hearing Qinghe talk about food, and seeing her possessive way of handling it, he couldn't help but sigh helplessly. Hearing Xia Yu speak of his dearest daughter like that, he wasn't angry; he just hoped his granddaughter's words would resonate with her.
Seeing Liu helping her daughter take care of the food again, he was a little angry. "We're eating, what are you arguing about? Xiaxia is right, Qinghe doesn't have to eat. She's as strong as an ox now, what's wrong with her going hungry if she eats less?"
The old man's words weren't exactly harsh, but Qinghe still didn't understand. She just felt that her father had changed and didn't care about her anymore. Thinking this, she actually picked up the fatty intestines that Liu had thrown on the table and ate them, ignoring Dongyu's shocked, almost popping-out eyes. She didn't understand, but who was Xia Yu? A child's body housed the mind of a twenty-something-year-old. She immediately understood that her grandfather was very worried about her aunt's figure.
As soon as the old man spoke, Liu's side fell silent, and he reassured everyone a few more times. The women's table fell silent, quietly eating their dumplings. The atmosphere on the men's side, however, quickly returned to peacefulness. Grandpa Zhang and Zhang Youjin were quite surprised that pig intestines could be made so deliciously, and the pig stomach also received unanimous praise. Because they would be helping Zhang Youtie and the others pick melons later, they only had a few drinks, not even a little tipsy.
Xia Yu and her group finished eating first. While her two aunts were cleaning up in the kitchen, Xia Yu told Liu Shi about her idea and asked for her opinion.
When Liu heard that her daughter wanted to teach her two sisters-in-law how to make braised pork intestines to sell, she thought it was a good idea, at least it would allow them to earn more money. But she still had to see what the old man thought, whether he would agree.
