Rebirth: Making a Fortune in Ancient Times
Chapter 457 The Arrogant Noblewoman
These three were Xia Yu, Da Niu, and Shi Jiu in disguise. They had thought it would be difficult to get in, but they were surprised at how easily they got in, so easily that it felt unreal.
"Miss, are we already in? Were you deliberately leading us into the city?" Da Niu asked, somewhat uneasy.
"It doesn't look like it, but we still need to be more vigilant these next few days. We need to be very careful when going in and out." Xia Yu thought about it and wasn't sure why the Prince of Ding'an was so lax in his management now that he had retreated to Dingcheng.
Actually, Xia Yu had misunderstood Prince Ding'an. The crushing defeat at Jialing Pass had made many people doubt his grand ambitions, especially given his stubbornness and refusal to listen to advice. Many now felt a sense of crisis; titles, wealth, and power were all fleeting, and holding onto money to protect one's life was the most practical thing.
To protect his reputation, the Prince of Ding'an forbade his subordinates from harassing the wealthy and powerful families in the city. However, the people didn't see it that way! What they had in their own hands was truly theirs; who knew how long anyone else would live? They might be the ones getting their oil poured on them next. Therefore, Ding'an only appeared to be doing well on the surface; in reality, it was already in chaos and rotten to the core.
Following the hidden coded messages on the wall at the street corner, the group found the others. After meeting up, they briefly discussed their next plan and then went their separate ways.
Xia Yu came here specifically for Mr. Hua. He learned from a letter sent by Ding Chengxin that Mr. Hua was the most trusted person of the Prince of Ding'an. Moreover, the Prince of Ding'an's ability to stand out among the various princes, possessing the strongest power and the largest army, was inextricably linked to Mr. Hua. Furthermore, it was Mr. Hua who had suggested capturing his family members in Zhangjia Village. Therefore, Xia Yu harbored a deep hatred for this cunning man he had never met.
Xia Yu and Da Niu Shijiu lived alone in a small courtyard, still dressed the same as when they came to the city. Every day, the group would stroll around the streets, gathering information.
In just seven or eight days, Xia Yu had already figured out exactly how many servants lived in the courtyard of the master's residence, their ages, and their temperaments.
"You said you know her concubine?" Xia Yu asked in surprise.
"Yes, I met her when Madam sent me out on an errand. She was a woman from the Red Pavilion, but I never expected her to be a concubine to an old man. However, she seems to be quite favored." Nineteen didn't explain how she met the concubine very clearly. After all, the fewer people who knew about the young lady's past in the Red Pavilion, the better.
Hearing what Shijiu said, Xia Yu thought for a while, then asked the two of them to come closer and whispered her plan to them.
"You are like this..."
After hearing Xia Yu's plan, Shijiu and Daniu were both somewhat astonished. Could this really work?
Seeing the disbelieving expressions on the two women's faces, Xia Yu was a little annoyed. She glanced at the two maids sideways and asked them coolly.
"What? You don't believe my plan?"
"Um... oh no, we believe you, we believe you." Hearing Xia Yu's cool tone, the two maids quickly nodded, indicating that they completely believed their mistress's words.
The next day, an extremely luxurious carriage suddenly appeared outside Ding'an City, followed by several other carriages carrying large boxes.
Upon reaching the gatekeeper, two pretty young maids jumped down from the carriage. They arrogantly raised their delicate chins and tossed a package into the gatekeeper's arms.
"This is our lady, let her through immediately."
The guards nearby were furious at her arrogant attitude and drew their knives, intending to step forward and lift the carriage curtain to investigate.
"Wait!" a soldier carrying a bag suddenly shouted.
"Quickly let the lady pass!"
The men looked at him with some resentment, only to see the guard peek out a corner of the contents of his cloth bag. Upon seeing that glint of silver, the arrogant men instantly lost their temper.
"Madam, please!" The men eagerly moved the roadblocks aside to let the luxurious carriage pass.
"Hmph," the two pretty maids glanced at the soldiers with disdain, snorted coldly, and walked past them with their heads held high.
Once the carriage had driven far away, one of the soldiers spat angrily at its retreating form.
"Pah, what trash! They're just two little girls, yet they dare to look down on their grandfather. Be careful they fall into my hands one day, and I'll see how I deal with them."
"Hey, you're something else. Eight ten-tael silver ingots! The boss said we'd each get one on duty today. If she could give me one every day, I wouldn't complain even if she looked down on me or treated me like dirt. Hahahaha..." the man with him advised.
"Hmph, you dare to look down on me... Hmph." The man seemed not to hear what the person next to him was saying, staring at the spot where the carriage had disappeared, his eyes filled with an unyielding malice.
Seeing him like this, the others found it rather boring and went back to doing what they were supposed to do.
The noblewoman in the carriage ostentatiously booked the most luxurious inn in the city as soon as she entered. She then cleared out everyone in the inn, paying each person ten times their room rate. Of course, some people didn't care about the money and refused to leave, but they were thrown out by her maids, along with ten times their room rate.
"Our lady said she'll compensate you ten times the room rate, not a penny less. I advise you not to refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit. Take the money and leave now."
His behavior was extremely arrogant.
So, within a day, everyone knew that a wealthy noblewoman had arrived in Dingcheng. Moreover, her maids were all skilled in martial arts, making her quite remarkable and mysterious. Because, apart from knowing she was rich, no one knew what she looked like, her age, or even her husband's surname.
