Rebirth: Making a Fortune in Ancient Times
Chapter 268 Aunt Jin Wins Over Her Daughter-in-Law
Amid her mother's cries and curses, Sister-in-law Jin quickly packed her bags, took the silver hairpin, left her parents' home, and returned to her own.
When she returned, her parents-in-law were still at their stall in town and hadn't come back yet. Only her sisters-in-law and sister-in-law were in the courtyard. Upon seeing her return, they only exchanged a few words.
"Sister-in-law is back!" She didn't say anything else, as if she had just returned from visiting someone.
She ignored everyone, ran back to her room, climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed), and cried her heart out until she was exhausted and fell asleep. When she woke up again, it was already dark. In a daze, before she could even realize where she was, she saw Jin Dayong carrying food and two fried sesame cakes into the room.
"You're awake? If you're awake, get up and eat!" Jin Dayong said casually, without asking her why she had come back on her own.
Thinking about the past ten days or so at her parents' home, the events of today, and the things she had come to understand, Sister-in-law Jin couldn't hold back her tears any longer.
"Dayong, I was wrong. I will never cause trouble again. I will live a good life with you and be filial to our parents."
Seeing that his usually competitive and strong-willed wife's eyes were swollen like walnuts and she looked much thinner than when she left, he figured she must not have had a good time at her parents' home for the past ten days or so.
He sighed, then moved the food closer to her and said...
"It's good that you understand. Let's eat. Mom heard from your sister-in-law that you've lost weight, so she specially fried two eggs for you. Eat them while they're hot."
"Wah...wah...wah..." Who would have thought that Jin Dayong's words would make his wife burst into tears? This was unprecedented. In the past, she was very self-respecting and rarely cried like this, except when she was throwing a tantrum.
Hearing the commotion, the Jin family elders scolded their son in the courtyard.
"Dayong, you're not allowed to upset your wife. Now that she's back, you two should live a good life together. Don't bring up the past anymore," said Aunt Jin.
"Mom, I didn't say anything. I just said you fried two eggs for her and she started crying," Jin Dayong hurriedly explained from inside the house.
Upon hearing her son's words, Aunt Jin's lips involuntarily curled into a smile, but she forcefully held it back and addressed her daughter-in-law, who was still crying inside the room.
"Daughter-in-law, stop crying. You'll feel bad if you keep holding it in. If two eggs aren't enough, I'll fry you a few more. Stop crying and eat while they're hot."
Jin Da Sao, sobbing uncontrollably, answered her mother-in-law's questions.
“Mother…Mother…I’m not crying about the eggs…we have enough eggs, and I…I don’t know why, I just want to cry.”
Hearing her daughter-in-law's words, Aunt Jin couldn't hide her smile. She stood outside the door for a few more words of comfort before returning inside.
Jin Xiaoqiao looked at her mother's barely suppressed smile and asked, somewhat puzzled.
"Mom, why are you so good to my sister-in-law? Wasn't she arguing with us just a few days ago?"
Grandma Jin held her daughter, smoothed her slightly disheveled hair, and whispered in her ear...
"Silly girl, your sister-in-law has obviously been mistreated by her family. The better our family treats her now, the more it will highlight how badly her family treats her. Although she's a bit of a troublemaker, we still need to find a way to win her heart over to your brother, since they'll be spending their lives together."
Jin Xiaoqiao listens to her mother very much.
So after marrying into the Zhang family, she kept her mother's teachings in mind: to respect her elders and care for her younger siblings. Even Liu, who usually looked down on everyone, began to think highly of this granddaughter-in-law.
She was particularly respectful and affectionate towards Zhang Youtie's family, which is why Liu Shi liked this niece-in-law very much.
I hurried to the small flower hall and saw Jin Xiaoqiao sitting there holding a child, her brows slightly furrowed, seemingly lost in thought.
"Xiaoqiao, why are you here at this time? Is something the matter?" As she spoke, Madam Liu reached out to hug the seven-month-old Xuan-ge'er.
“Our Xuan-ge is so fast! Let Grandma give him a hug.”
Because the two families visited each other frequently, Xuan Ge and Liu Shi were not unfamiliar with each other. As soon as Liu Shi reached out, he opened his arms and leaned towards Liu Shi, wanting her to hug him.
"Third Aunt, he just crawled on the ground and he's very dirty. Don't get your clothes dirty." Jin Xiaoqiao stopped her son, afraid that he would break free from her grasp and fall.
“Our Xuan-ge isn’t dirty at all. Doesn’t Xuan-ge like Grandma?” As she spoke, Liu-shi took the baby from her. She took out a handkerchief and gently wiped the drool from the corner of Xuan-ge’s mouth.
"Is something wrong at the old house?" Madam Liu asked again.
"Third Aunt, the Fang family just sent a letter saying that Auntie's pregnancy has been lost..." Upon hearing what she said, Liu Shi hurriedly covered one of Xuan Ge's ears and pressed him into her arms, not wanting him to hear what Jin Xiaoqiao was saying.
Seeing Liu's actions, Jin Xiaoqiao immediately fell silent.
"Green Cloud, take the boy to play in the yard."
"Yes, ma'am."
After the two green-cloud maids carried Xuan-ge out, Liu-shi pulled Jin Xiao-qiao to sit down.
"What happened? Tell me properly. Last time your grandma went to see you, everything was fine, right? How could it suddenly fall off?"
"From what I just overheard, it seems that my uncle wanted to take Xiaoxing as a concubine, but my aunt disagreed, so they started making a scene. In the chaos, someone pushed my aunt down, and then..."
How is your grandma now?
"My grandma just fainted, but she woke up when I arrived. My mother asked me to come and call my third aunt over so we can discuss what to do about this."
"Let's go then, let's go now."
