Rebirth: Making a Fortune in Ancient Times
Chapter 265 First Meeting
Wu carefully drew the team's mark on a piece of paper, blew it dry, and then handed it to Captain Ding, who was sitting across the table.
“That’s excellent. I’ll immediately arrange for my men to search in the nearby towns.”
"Thank you for your trouble, Brother Ding. We're staying at the Fulailou Inn in the city. If there's any news, we'll need you to send a message there."
“Staying in an inn is quite inconvenient. There are a few empty courtyards here; I’ve had two cleaned up. Why don’t you move in here?”
"This is too much trouble for Brother Ding. We're fine staying at the inn," Wu Yi said, but as soon as he finished speaking, he saw Captain Ding smile.
“Brother Wu, we may need to discuss this matter several times. It would be inconvenient to inform you at the inn every time, and besides, it would easily expose our identities,” Captain Ding said, pointing to the piece of paper Wu Yi had given him.
“Brother Ding is indeed more thoughtful. I’ll go back to the inn to check out now and move in later. I’ll be troubling you then.”
"You're too kind, we're all family."
After sending the people away, Captain Ding called for reinforcements. A total of sixteen people were sent from the four towns, four from each town.
"Go to the areas I assigned and search the town for this sign. If you find it, come back and report to me. If you don't, you can draw this pattern on the wall. If anyone finds you by following this pattern, come back and report immediately..." Captain Ding passed the pattern down so everyone could see it clearly. Finally, he told his men exactly what Wu Yi had described about Xiao Wu's appearance.
"Captain, this guy looks so plain. Isn't he anything special?" one of them couldn't help but ask after hearing Captain Ding's description.
After a moment of silence, Captain Ding finally spoke.
"There are some unusual features, such as a red birthmark the size of an egg on his buttock."
"..."
After much deliberation, Captain Ding decided to reveal the matter. He explained the special markings, leaving the method to be determined by the team.
Seeing the conflicted expression shift from his own face to that of his brothers, Captain Ding remained outwardly calm but inwardly satisfied.
After his men left, the courtyard returned to its usual quiet.
Nineteen, dressed as a servant, was strolling leisurely down the street with Xia Yu's letter tucked in his arms. In fact, his destination was very clear: the direction of Captain Ding's courtyard.
In the bustling crowd, Nineteen bumped into Wu Yi and his group, who were coming out of the courtyard and heading to the inn to check out. They exchanged glances, seemingly casually, before passing each other.
After passing by and walking a few more steps, Wu Yi couldn't help but stop and turn back to look at Nineteen's back. Wu Er, who was beside him, whispered something.
"Boss, that servant was really strange."
"It's quite strange. Do you think you can win against him?" Wu Yi asked Wu Er.
"I don't know, I can't explain it clearly," Wu Er thought for a moment and then shook his head honestly.
"Let's go. Our main task this time is to deliver that letter to our master. Keep a low profile and don't cause any trouble," Wu Yi instructed the group.
"Yes"
After the group turned and left, Nineteen, who had been being watched, stopped, turned around, glanced at them, and mentally reviewed their appearances before continuing to walk towards the courtyard.
Hearing another knock at the door—three times, then two, then two, then three—Zhao Dawei immediately opened the door.
"Nineteen, what brings you here too?"
"Hmm? Brother Zhao, who else has come?" Nineteen asked, seizing on a loophole in Zhao Dawei's words.
"Um... it's just... it's just..." He stammered and couldn't get it out clearly.
Nineteen didn't argue with him; there were some things Zhao Dawei couldn't say.
She never understood why Lord Shen would send so many people to guard this county town. At first, she thought these people were there to protect Master Shen and Madam Shen. But as time went on, she realized that wasn't the case.
Later, she suspected it might be because of her mistress, but she eventually ruled that out. However, she also knew that these things were not her concern; she only needed to protect her mistress as instructed.
"Nineteen, what brings you here at this hour? Is something the matter?" Hearing Nineteen and Zhao Dawei's conversation in the courtyard, Captain Ding came out of the house and asked.
"Yes, there are some things. Captain Ding, let's talk inside."
"it is good"
Upon entering the room, Xia Yu saw the tokens that Captain Ding had not yet put away on the table. These were the tokens she had brought a few days ago, and they were now on the table, presumably because Captain Ding was studying them when she arrived.
Seeing that Nineteen's gaze fell on the items on the table, Captain Ding picked up a token and sighed.
"I've been studying these brands for days but still can't figure out where they came from. I was just thinking of sending these brands, along with that letter, to the capital for the Lord."
"Since this has been handed over to Captain Ding, it's entirely up to him. I happen to have a letter for Miss Feng here; it needs to be delivered to the magistrate as soon as possible." Nineteen took out the letter from her pocket, and remembering Xia Yu's expression at the time, she added very seriously...
"When the young lady gave me the letter, she looked very serious and instructed me to make sure that the letter was delivered to the master."
"Oh, this has never happened before. Has something important happened at the Zhang family's place?" Captain Ding couldn't help but ask after hearing what Nineteen said.
Nineteen frowned and thought carefully about what had happened in the past two days and the timing of Xia Yu's situation.
After a while, he said it for sure.
"Nothing has happened at home these past two days. Yesterday, the master returned from outside, and dinner was quite lively. Miss also went to bed without any unusual behavior last night. However, this morning when she got up to practice martial arts, I sensed that Miss's mood was a bit off. After breakfast, she went back to her room and wrote this letter, then asked me to bring it to her. Could something have happened during the night?"
But before Captain Ding could answer, she shook her head and dismissed the idea.
“Nothing could have happened at night. If something had happened, I would be in the same courtyard as Miss, so I would know.” Nineteen was very puzzled and couldn’t understand what could have caused Miss’s emotions to change so drastically overnight.
However, neither she nor Captain Ding could possibly know that what caused Xia Yu's emotional change was some conjecture in her mind and something from her dream. No matter how high her martial arts skills were, how could she possibly know?
