Beast Taming Star Journey
Chapter 286 Returning Amidst Danger
"Su Yao..." I called out her name weakly, my voice so hoarse it was almost inaudible.
The world before me seemed shrouded in a thin mist, my legs felt as heavy as lead, and every step felt like walking on a knife's edge. I was almost entirely propelled by willpower as I walked toward the place I had arranged to meet Su Yao.
After escaping the dark lair, the tungsten boy and I didn't dare stop for a moment, running wildly along the rugged mountain path. The roars of explosions and the furious cries of the tantalum guards behind us were like death knells, constantly spurring us onward. I dared not look back, afraid to see those hideous faces, afraid to be consumed by fear. I had only one thought: I had to get back alive, back to Su Yao's side!
Finally, I saw that familiar ancient locust tree, and that familiar figure. Su Yao! She was pacing anxiously back and forth, glancing every now and then in the direction I had come from.
The moment she saw me, the anxiety on her face vanished instantly, replaced by overwhelming joy. She rushed towards me, like a light swallow, and nestled into my arms.
"Nongyu! You're back!" Her voice was choked with sobs as she hugged me tightly, as if she wanted to meld me into her body.
Feeling her warm embrace and her rapid heartbeat, all my weariness and fear vanished. I hugged her back tightly, burying my head in her hair, greedily inhaling her familiar scent.
"I'm back." My voice was still hoarse, but full of determination.
We held each other tightly, speechless for a long time. At that moment, it felt as if the world consisted only of the two of us; all the dangers and conspiracies were irrelevant to us.
Su Yao gently pushed me away and carefully examined the wounds on my body. My experience in the Dark Nest had left me covered in wounds and my clothes in tatters. Seeing these wounds, Su Yao's eyes reddened, and she tenderly stroked my wounds.
"Does it hurt?" Her voice was as soft as a feather, yet it trembled slightly.
I shook my head and said with a smile, "It doesn't hurt, it doesn't hurt at all."
I know she feels sorry for me, and I feel sorry for her too. For my sake, she waits here alone, enduring immense pressure and anxiety.
I told her the information I had obtained from the Dark Nest, and Su Yao's expression turned serious.
"I never imagined that the forces of darkness had already infiltrated the Beast Taming Realm." Her tone carried a hint of worry.
I nodded, my heart filled with unease. This experience made me realize that the enemy we faced was more powerful and cunning than I had imagined.
We must inform others of this news as soon as possible so they can prepare.
Just as I was about to leave, I suddenly sensed some strange looks around me. I looked around and noticed that several beast tamers were behaving suspiciously; they seemed to be deliberately avoiding our gaze.
A sense of unease rose within me. Why did these people... feel so strange?
I grabbed Su Yao's hand and whispered, "Wait, something seems off..."
Following my gaze, Su Yao also noticed the furtive beast tamers. She frowned slightly and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong?"
I shook my head, signaling her to keep quiet, and then pretended to continue walking forward as if nothing had happened, but my eyes were always on those people. They didn't leave, but followed us at a distance, always keeping a distance, like venomous snakes lurking in the dark, making one feel a chill down their spine.
In this world where beast taming reigns supreme, trust among beast tamers is paramount. We fight side by side, entrusting our backs to each other and our lives to one another. Betrayal has unimaginable consequences; at best, it leads to disgrace and ruin, at worst, the destruction of one's entire family. I once witnessed a beast taming family being wiped out because of an internal traitor, and the bloody scene still sends chills down my spine.
Could it be... that there are spies from the dark forces among these people? This thought, once it appeared, grew wildly in my mind like weeds. I gripped Su Yao's hand tightly, my palms sweating. Su Yao noticed my unease; she gripped my hand in return, giving me a resolute look.
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. Now was not the time to alert them; I needed to figure out their identities and motives first.
"Let's go back to the Beast Taming Guild first," I said to Su Yao in a low voice.
The Beast Taming Guild is a gathering place for beast tamers and a center for information exchange. Perhaps some clues can be found there.
We quickened our pace, and the people behind us also quickened their pace, maintaining their distance. I sneered inwardly; it seemed my guess was right—they were indeed suspicious.
Upon arriving at the Beast Taming Guild, I pretended to report on a mission and told the guild elders about the information I had obtained from the Dark Nest. The elders were shocked and immediately summoned the other elders to discuss countermeasures.
I took the opportunity to observe the beast tamers in the guild and, sure enough, found the same people who had been following us earlier among them. They were well disguised, chatting and laughing with the other beast tamers, showing no flaws. However, I clearly remembered their eyes—those evasive, uneasy eyes couldn't fool me.
One of the beast tamers, dressed in a long golden robe, caught my attention. He was tall and thin, with a mustache, and a perpetually fake smile on his face. I remembered him; I had caught a glimpse of him in the distance on the way out of the Dark Lair. At the time, I thought it was my imagination, but now it seemed very likely that he was an informant within the Dark Forces!
I decided to investigate this golden-robed beast tamer in secret.
While everyone was discussing countermeasures, I quietly left the guild and followed the golden-robed beast tamer. He seemed unaware that I was following him and headed straight for a secluded alley.
My heart leaped into my throat, a sense of foreboding washing over me… He turned into a dead end and stopped. I hid in the shadows, holding my breath, watching his every move.
He pulled a slip of paper from his pocket and carefully read it in the dim light. I squinted, trying to make out the contents, but could only make out a few blurry words.
Suddenly, he abruptly raised his head and looked in my direction.
"Who's there?!" His voice was low and hoarse, with a hint of warning.
My heart sank...
